Essential Questions:How can the measurement of an object be converted into equivalent units? How can we use line plots to display a data set of fraction measurements? What is volume? What units of measurement do you use to measure volume of a solid figure? How can you calculate volume of rectangular prisms in real world and mathematical situations?
Essential Understanding:Students will demonstrate the ability to convert measurements within the same system of measurement in the context of multi-step, real-world problems. Students will be able to display fractional data on a line plot and be able to use the line plot to solve real world problems. They will understand that volume is a derived attribute that, once a length unit is specified, can be computed as the product of three length measurements or as the product of one area and one length measurement.
Note: no gaps or overlaps with unit cubes
Vocabulary: conversion, metric system, ratio, US standard, data set, increments, line plot, attribute, cubic unit, volume, solid figure, unit cube, prism,Length, width, base, height, formula, additive, non-overlapping
Guiding questions:How do we measure volume? How can you calculate volume of a right rectangular prism?
Assessment:#1 conversions between units within a given measurement system#2 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit and use this information to solve a real world problem. #3 Determine the volume of rectangular prisms
Formative:We will be using a skills checklist as we progress through the lessons of this unit.
