Essential Skills - Clipping MaskIn this tutorial we will add an image inside live text by using a Clipping Mask.

Start Finish

A clipping mask lets you use the content of a layer to mask the layers above it.The masking is determined by the content of the bottom or base layer. The non-transparent content of the base layer clips (reveals) the content of the layersabove it in the clipping mask. All other content in the clipped layers is maskedout.

Step 1Open the image Start.jpg

Select the Type tool, keyboard shortcut T.

In the Tool Options bar find a nice chunky text, I’m going to use Impact.Select black as the text colour and 72pt for the size.

Then type the word Zoom.

Press Enter or click the tick in the tooloptions bar to set the text.

Select the Move Tool and move the textinto the middle of the document.

Now we will make the text bigger and rotate it using the Free TransformCommand. Keyboard ShortcutCTRL+T(CMD+T on a mac).

Stretch and rotate the text by clicking onthe control handles so it runs diagonallyacross the screen.

Press the Enter key to set the text.

Step 3

Drag the zoom type layer underneath the image layer.Initially it will not go because the base layer is abackground layer and this is always the bottom layer inthe stack. It has a padlock on, to remove the padlockdrag that padlock into the trashcan or rename thelayer. Either will remove the padlock and turn the layerinto a standard layer.

Now we can reposition the type layer under theimage layer.

Make sure that the image layer isactive. Now create a clippingmask. Go to the Layer Menu andselect Create Clipping Mask or usethe keyboard shortcutCTRL+ALT+G(CMD+ALT+G on mac)
