Step 1: DECIDE what you are being asked to do.
The problem tells you that Alek would like to give each friend an equalnumber of stamps. You must find how many stamps Alek should give to eachfriend if he keeps 8 stamps for himself.
Step 2: FIND what you need to know.
You can find the following facts in the problem:
• Number of stamps Alek has = 35• Number of stamps Alek would like to keep = 8• Number of friends Alek would like to give stamps to = 9
Step 3: CHOOSE a strategy for solving the problem.
There is often more than one way to solve a math problem. In this book youwill learn how to use several problem-solving strategies. Sometimes you cansolve a problem by drawing a picture. Looking at a picture can make it easierto find the solution.
PART A: The 5-Step Problem-Solving Plan
THE 5-STEP PROBLEM-SOLVING PLAN
Modeled InstructionWhen solving math problems, you need to follow a plan. This helps you to organizeinformation and choose a strategy to solve the problem. The example below shows howto follow the 5-Step Problem-Solving Plan. Read the math problem and follow each stepof the plan.

The 5-Step Problem-Solving Plan
Step 4: SOLVE the problem.
• Draw a picture to show the total number of stamps that Alek has.• Cross out the stamps Alek will keep for himself.• Draw circles around the stamps each friend should receive.
Look at the drawing. Count how many stamps are inside each circle. Now youcan see that Alek should give each of his friends 3 stamps.
Step 5: CHECK your answer.
You can use number sentences to check your answer.
If Alek has 35 stamps and would like to keep 8, then the number of stampsleft to give to his friends is 35 – 8 = 27.
If Alek gives 3 stamps to each of his 9 friends, then the total number ofstamps he gives to his friends is 3 x 9 = 27.
Since the answer to both number sentences is the same, you know that youranswer makes sense.

STRATEGY 10: Look for a Pattern
Modeled InstructionNow you will learn how to solve a math problem by looking for a pattern. Read theproblem below. The plan that follows will explain how to use this strategy.
DECIDE what you are being asked to do.
The question asks what the total number of cans will be after one more rowis added. First decide how many cans will be added to the next row. Thenyou can find the total number of cans.
FIND what you need to know.
The picture shows how many cans are in each row.
• Row 1 has 7 cans.• Row 2 has 6 cans.• Row 3 has 5 cans.• Row 4 has 4 cans.

CHOOSE a strategy for solving the problem.
You already know how many cans are in each of the first four rows. You canuse this information to Look for a Pattern. The pattern will help youdecide how many cans there will be in the next row.
SOLVE the problem.
Study how many cans are in each row. First, ask yourself what the differenceis between the number of cans in Row 1 and Row 2.
Row 1 has 7 cans.Row 2 has 6 cans.
The difference is 7 – 6 = 1.
Next, find the difference between the number of cans in Row 2 and Row 3.
Row 2 has 6 cans.Row 3 has 5 cans.
The difference is 6 – 5 = 1.
Then, find the difference between the number of cans in Row 3 and Row 4.
Row 3 has 5 cans.Row 4 has 4 cans.
The difference is 5 – 4 = 1.
You should be able to see a pattern. Each row that is added has 1 can fewerthan the row beneath it. If this pattern continues, the next row added willhave 1 can fewer than Row 4.
4 cans – 1 can = 3 cans
Find the total number of cans by adding how many are in each row.
7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 = 25(Row 1) (Row 2) (Row 3) (Row 4) (Row 5)
The total number of cans is equal to 25.
CHECK your answer.
Check your answer by adding the next row to the diagram. The next rowshould have 3 cans in it. Then count the total number of cans. The totalnumber of cans is 25.
