The Essential Trumpet.

The trumpet is one of the world’s most popular instruments, and also one of the oldest, with the firstversions of it dating back to around 1500BC! This beautiful brass instrument’s brilliant sound lendsitself to many genres of music: from classical to jazz to pop to folk – you name it and the trumpet canplay it. Many of the world’s top trumpeters are household names, like Louis Armstrong, DizzyGillespie, Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis.

Repertoire for the trumpet is as diverse as it is prolific. One of the trumpet’s common uses is as theherald of grand occasions – Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man brings crowds of cheeringfans to tears at sporting events; Jeremiah Clarke’s Trumpet Voluntary jubilantly announces brideswalking down the aisle from St Peter’s in Venice to St Peter’s in Coober Pedy! Then there are themultitudes of brilliant and virtuosic concertos written for this fiendishly difficult-to-play instrument –Haydn, Hummel, Lovelock, Carmichael, to name a few. And there is no shortage of magnificentarrangements for trumpeters to wrap their lips around either – Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,Schubert’s Ave Maria and Monti’s Czárdás, among others.

While the degree of difficulty for playing the trumpet may be extreme, those with the gift can easilyproduce an extraordinary array of sounds. Such techniques as flutter-tonguing, double-tonguing, triple-or even doodle-tonguing can result in phenomenal feats of speed and brilliance. Growling, hissing, talking and singing are all possible through the trumpet’s mouthpiece. This is an instrument withalmost limitless potential. And of course there are those who enjoy playing a bit of mouth trumpet –no instrument necessary!

This tantalising trumpet compilation captures some of the best-known pieces along with rare andsurprising delights.

“Stay we no longer, dreaming of renown, But sound the trumpets, and about our task.”

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616)
