Location

Bay 5 of the main shelves, except those in the Military & Wartime category which can be found in Bay 8

Scope of the collection

The Archives and Local Studies Centre holds a comprehensive collection of printed books relating to the boroughs adjoining Barking and Dagenham (Redbridge, Newham and Havering). It is particularly strong for items published before 1965.

Archives:

Until 1830 Great Ilford was part of the parish of Barking. Because of this, Rate Books for the Ilford Ward (covering 1728-1829) and Chadwell Ward (1744-1778) of the parish are held here, and can be viewed by appointment.

We also hold the 1842 Tithe Schedule for Barking and Ilford.

We also hold some Ordnance Survey maps covering the Redbridge area (please ask for details).

The books are for reference only, so are always available on the open shelves. Before the re-opening of Valence House in summer 2010, each volume was carefully cleaned by Archives and Local Studies volunteers before being added to the sustainable custom-built oak shelves in the new library.
