MARCH 10, 2019 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT

First Sunday of Lent

Standing in the reception line of a friend’s funeral recently, an acquaintance and I struck up a conver-sation, during which she reminded me that I sang at the funeral of her first husband, who died tragically in a river during a honeymoon rafting trip forty years ago. “Wait,” I said, “that was YOU? I’ve told the story of singing ‘Be not Afraid’ at the funeral of a bride-groom who drowned on his honeymoon so many times. When I sang the words Though you pass through raging waters in the sea you shall not drown I knew that if someone didn’t explain what those words meant I simply couldn’t continue being believing in either the Old or New Testament.” A year later I saw the notice about a Biblical School starting. I knew immediately that I had found the people who could explain the seeming discrepancies between the promises in the scriptures and what we experience in life. Satan knew the struggle that the People of the Book were having, trying to reconcile the comfort of their scriptures with the terrors of their real lives. The very Jews whose scriptures promised the restora-tion of their land were living under the thumb of the violent Roman occupiers. Hunger was the daily cru-cible for those whose prophets promised long lives in the land, and streets filled with happy children. Go ahead, said Satan, give those famous scriptures of yours a try. Throw yourself off those rocks. Let’s see what happens. If, this Lent, when you watch the news, and then read the Lenten scriptures, you begin to despair that those scriptures aren’t really true, take heart. Jesus overcame Satan when he whispered the same questions. And Jesus has overcome the world. What actions will I take this Lent to learn how to read the scriptures more fully?

Observances for the Week Sunday: 1st Sunday of Lent; Daylight Saving Time Begins Next Sunday: 2nd Sunday of Lent; St. Patrick's Day

Questions of the week~ First Reading Throughout the Book of Deuteronomy, and in today's reading, Moses reminds the Israelites of how God was present through-out their history. Moses instructed Israel to make a sacrificial offering to the Lord God in thanksgiving. As we begin the sea-son of Lent, how will you show gratitude to the Lord? Second Reading Paul teaches the Roman Christians that everyone (Jew and Gentile alike) who believes in Christ with their heart and mind will be saved. Why do you think anyone would object to this teaching? Gospel Reading Jesus began his public ministry defeating the temptations of the devil. How do you think the devil tempts you?

GOSPEL MEDITATION - As we enter into this Lenten season of penance and self-denial, we're reminded that the God we follow is no stranger to these things. In this Sunday's Gospel, we see the temptations of Jesus which have parallels throughout Scripture and in our own lives. The apostle John warns against temptations to sensual lust, enticement of the eyes, and a pre-tentious life (cf. 1 John 2:16). Before Eve plucks the fruit from the tree, she hears it is good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom (cf. Genesis 3:6). The temptations of Jesus are our own. "Turn these stones to bread." Here is the lure of bodily comfort, like good food or sensual lust. It's the simplest of temptations because it's instinctual. We want good for our bodies! But there may be times these bodily goods don't serve the higher good for our souls. The leap "from the temple parapet" would entice the eye of the person watch-ing. A feat like this would prove Jesus' Messianic ability. His popularity could be a shortcut to the cross. We might not be daredevils, but we want people to like us and be impressed by us. Do we sacrifice our values along the way? To "bow and worship" the devil - and so claim power and a pretentious life - seems like a dramatic temptation. Not everyone may feel enticed by power in the professional sense, but all of us want control. A volunteer team can feel just as intense as the boardroom! How often do we prefer to be in control of our lives (and perhaps even the lives of others), rather than allow God to be God? When we consider areas of temptation and sin, it's not to feel ashamed. The temptation in the desert reminds us that we are not alone and that the strength of Jesus can be our strength, too.

The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 8:30 Sundays before the 9 am Mass

LIVE THE LITURGY -~ Temptation is a part of our lives. Even Jesus wrestled with temptation. Our faith tells us that we are meant to live our lives in service of God's kingdom. Yet, we often find ourselves pursuing our own desires rather than God's. The Gospel clearly tells us that true power is found in the embrace of virtue - liv-ing lives of non-violence, mercy, and forgiveness. Yet, we still are not convinced and seek things that will hurt us and retali-ate against those who harm us. When Jesus faced temptation, he found security in who he was, which firmly rooted him in his mission and gave him the determination to trust in God. We, too, must learn to find security in our identity as a son or daughter of God, to live out our mission rooted in that truth, and to be confident in God's abiding presence.

Dear St. Rose of Lima Community,

In the first letter of Peter, he encourages all the faithful to “stay sober and alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, solid in your faith” (1 Pt. 5:8-9). With this imploration to “stay sober and alert” and many other reminders from various authors of the books of Sacred Scripture, and elsewhere, of the spiritual battle we are in the midst of, we do well to “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Eph. 6:11).

One aspect of the “whole armor of God” is the help offered to us by St. Michael the Archangel.

Before we go into the particular St. Michael, let’s take a look at this general question: Who are the angels and archangels?

Pope St. Gregory the Great distinguishes between angels and archangels: “Those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels.” The Catechism explains: “From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’ Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God” (No. 336).

We see elsewhere in the Catechism: The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls ‘angels’ is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition” (No. 328).

In particular, St. Michael’s name means “Who is like God.” Some of his specific actions are recorded in Sacred Scripture, and, in each case, we obtain a glimpse into their intense love for God, intently focused wills and strong intellects.

In the Office of Readings, from the Liturgy of the Hours, which is a part of the official, liturgical and public prayer of the Church, we read an antiphon that goes, “The sea grew turbulent and the earth trembled when Michael the archangel came down from heaven.” In other words, his presence is powerful.

We also read in Scripture, it was St. Michael who long ago led the battle against Satan: “Then war broke out in Heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. Although the dragon and his angels fought back, they were overpowered and lost their place in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent known as the devil or Satan, the seducer of the whole world, was driven out; he was hurled down to earth and his minions with him” (Rev. 12: 7-9).

St. Michael’s will is focused, immovable, and entirely driven toward accomplishing goodness: he is a protector of souls, and he wields his relentless sword of righteous justice against the poisonous and vindictive aspirations of the one who is know as a liar from the beginning. St. John Paul II said, “The battle against the devil is the principal task of Saint Michael the archangel.”

When St. Michael the Archangel appeared to the three children at Fatima in 1916, preparing the way for the apparition of our Blessed Mother which was soon to follow, he said to them, “Fear not, I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me.” Then, prostrating himself, he repeated three times: “My God; I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love Thee! I beg Thee forgiveness for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love Thee!” St. Michael clearly reveals his love for God and men with these words. He is a serious and committed servant and warrior for God’s purposes. He is incredibly focused, dedicated, fearless and full of trust in God’s sovereign goodness and power.

As a parish family, may we call upon St. Michael as a tremendous weapon in God’s armor of faith!

St. Michael, pray for us.

Fr. Nick

Page 7: Est. 1924 · 2019. 9. 19.
