PERSPECTIVES

Mobile phonesSunday, 27 May, 2012

Want to own a mobile phone? Everybodywill say yes, because mobile phones areconvenient, compact and multi-functional.They help us contact our friends and familymembers from any place or at any time. Wecan make contacts with others easily by callingor sending messages even without electricity. So, it is clear why almost all the people todaywish to have a mobile phone.

In addition, we can carry a mobile phoneeasily so we don’t miss important calls, and wecan call for direction if we get lost. When on atrip in an unfamiliar place needing help, wecan rely on them. If we are in an accident, wecan call the police or ambulance, and also takepictures of the accident.

And there are many other advantagesthat make mobile phones essential part oftoday’s human society of the ever advancingworld.

Although, mobile phones can offer muchhelp, there are also downsides. Too much useof mobile phones introduces bad effects likedizzy, blood-brain barrier, or ear problems.Especially, teens and children under 16 aremore vulnerable to brain damage due to mobilephone use.

Mobile phones sometimes cause morehazards on the roads than drunk and distracteddriving when people use them to talk, text oraccess the internet while behind the wheel. Theworst thing is that they emit radiation whichmany scientists say is dreadful to the eardrumand even the cause of brain cancer.

As they have become the essential partof human life, we find it impossible to livewithout them. So, the best way is we musteducate ourselves to the hazards and benefitsof using them. Moreover we must find meansto protect ourselves from bad effects harmfulto our health. And then buy a mobile phone.

ANN ARBOR, 26 May—A $22 million safety researchproject will equip motorvehicles with connectedtechnologies, devices thatmay someday preventcrashes, US researchers say.

The University ofMichigan’s TransportationResearch Institute, in thelargest street-level pilotproject in the westernhemisphere, has partneredwith the US Department ofTransportation to test

connected vehicle techno-logy in real world use by actualdrivers, the universityreported.

The technologyinvolves vehicle-to-vehicleand vehicle-to-infrastructurewireless communications thatprivately and securelytransmit and receive vehicledata such as position andspeed and can alert drivers toa potential crash situation suchas a nearby vehicleunexpectedly breaking, a

sudden lane change ormerging traffic.

Nearly 3,000 cars, trucksand buses will be equippedwith the technology whilesimilar devices will be locatedat intersections, curvelocations, and freeway sitesthroughout the test area, researchers said.

“We are equippingvehicles that spend timedriving in the 48105 ZIP code— northeast Ann Arbor andthe surrounding area,” JimSayer, an UMTRI researcher, said.

Surprising source of Arcticmercury seen

The Lena River delta. The Lena is one of several majorrivers that flows northward into the Arctic Ocean.

INTERNETHyperion, an oddly-shaped moon of Saturn.—INTERNET

CAMBRIDGE, 26 May—Toxic mercury in the Arctic, long thought to be comingprimarily from atmosphericsources, is also being carriedinto the region by rivers, USscientists say.

While the atmospheric

source has long been studied, new research suggests twiceas much mercury actuallycomes from the flow ofcircumpolar rivers that carrythe element north into theArctic Ocean, HarvardUniversity researchersreported on Monday.

“The Arctic is a uniqueenvironment because it’s soremote from mostanthropogenic (human-influenced) sources ofmercury, yet we know that theconcentrations of mercury inArctic marine mammals areamong the highest in theworld,” Harvard scientistJenny A Fisher said.

“This is dangerous to

both marine life and humans. The question from a scientificstandpoint is, where does thatmercury come from?”

The most importantrivers flowing to the ArcticOcean are in Siberia: the Lena, the Ob, and the Yenisei.

Mercury emission from gold, silver, and mercury mines inSiberia may be polluting thoserivers, researcher said.

The Arctic Ocean isshallow, which increases itssensitivity to input from rivers, they said. “The environmentalimplications of this findingare huge. It means, forexample, that climate changecould have a very large impacton arctic mercury, larger thanthe impact of controllingemissions to the atmosphere,”Fisher said.

“More work is needednow to measure the mercurydischarged by rivers and todetermine its origin.”

for Asia Pacific Aviation(CAPA) said in a report.

“In my estimate, at thecurrent price and withouttaking into account the listprice, the actual price for theorder could be $3.5 billion to$3.75 billion,” Kapil Kaul, regional head of CAPA, toldReuters.

A Jet spokeswoman wasnot immediately available forcomment.

India’s aviation sectorhas been beset by high costsof fuel and airport charges

and heavy debt, with allcarriers except unlistedIndigo Airlines postinglosses in the fiscal year thatended in March.

With two debt-riddencarriers, Kingfisher Airlines(KING NS) and Air IndiaAINUL, curtailing most oftheir flights Jet stands tobenefit the most, CAPA said.

Kingfisher, owned byflamboyant liquor baronVijay Mallya, has beenstruggling to pay off $1.3billion loan and has slashedthe number of its daily flights.

State-owned Air India, which survives ongovernment bailout, hascancelled most of itsinternational flights becauseof an ongoing strike by itspilots.

“Kingfisher’s dramaticcontraction from 66 to 16operational aircraft, of whichhalf are regional ATR aircraft, has left the domestic business

market open for Jet Airways,”CAPA said.

ATR, which makes smallhaul planes, is an equalpartnership between twomajor European aeronauticsplayers, Alenia Aermacchi, aFinmeccanica (SIFI MI)company, and EADS (EADPA).

The disruption at AirIndia’s longhaul routes hasdriven North American andUK traffic to Jet, it said.

Jet and other privatecarriers such as SpiceJet(SPJT BO) and unlisted GoAir and Indigo are likely topost a combined profit of $200million in the fiscal year endingnext March, the consultancysaid.

However, losses atKingfisher and Air India willkeep the industry in the red tothe tune of $1.3 billion to$1.4 billion in 2012/13,compared with a totalindustry loss of $2 billion inthe previous year, CAPAsaid.—Reuters

Breast milk antibodies helpneutralize HIV

WASHINGTON, 26 May—Antibodies isolated from infectedmothers’ breast milk can inhibit the virus that causes AIDS,says a new discovery. HIV-1 can be transmitted from motherto child via breastfeeding, posing a challenge for safe infantfeeding practices in areas of high HIV-1 prevalence. But onlyone in 10 HIV-infected nursing mothers is known to pass thevirus to their infants.

“That is remarkable, because nursing children areexposed multiple times each day during their first year oflife,” said senior author Sallie Permar, assistant professor ofpaediatrics and infectious diseases at Duke UniversityMedical Centre (DUMC). “We are asking if there is animmune response that protects 90 percent of infants, andcould we harness that response to develop immune systemprophylaxis (protection) during breastfeeding for mothersinfected with HIV-1,” Permar, who led the study, was quotedas saying in the journal Public library of Science.

“Our work helped establish that these B-cells in breastmilk can produce HIV-neutralizing antibodies, so enhancingthe response or getting more mucosal B-cells to producethose helpful antibodies would be useful, and this is apossible route to explore for HIV-1 vaccine development,”Permar said, according to a university statement.

“This is important work that seeks to understand whata vaccine must do to protect babies from mucosal transmissionduring breastfeeding,” said Barton Haynes, MD, study co-author and a national leader in AIDS/HIV research who is alsodirector of the Intre for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology(CHAVI), as well as director of the Duke Human VaccineInstitute (DHVI). “The antibodies isolated are the first HIVantibodies isolated from breast milk that react with the HIV-1 envelope, and it important to understand how they work toattack HIV-1,” added Haynes.—Internet

Now a portable tool to detect dengue mosquitoes!SYDNEY, 26 May—A new portable tool

will now help doctors detect dengue virus-carrying mosquitoes and help reduce thelikelihood of human infections around theworld.

Every year, almost one million people,a large proportion of whom are children, require hospitalisation for severe dengue.Besides, over a 100 million people beinginfected globally can result in milddebilitation through to the life-threateningcomplications of dengue haemorrhagicfever.

The simple diagnostic tool, developedby David Muller and colleagues from theUniversity of Queensland and researchgroups in Melbourne and South America, can be used in the field to detect dengueinfection in large numbers of mosquitoes.

“Unlike other approaches to mosquitosurveillance, this new tool providesinformation on whether mosquitoes arecarrying dengue,” Muller was quoted as sayingin the Journal of Virological Methods.

“It is rapid, specific, and does not requirespecialised equipment or personnel. Thismeans it will be viable for use in developingregions of the world where dengue is asignificant health and economic burden,”Muller said, according to a universitystatement.

Almost half of the world’s population isat risk of contracting the virus which istransmitted to humans by the bite of aninfectious female mosquito.

Paul Young, professor leader of Muller’steam at the Australian Infectious DiseasesResearch Centre, said that rigorous fieldtesting was still being conducted.

“The goal of this work is to provide thetools to not only assess mosquito numbers inthe field but also their infection status,”Young said.

“This information could then be directlyuploaded with GPS information via mobiledevices to coordinating centres,” Youngadded.—Internet

Afghan parliament approvesUS-Afghan security pact

KABUL, 26 May — Afghanistan’s parliament approvedon Saturday a strategic pact between Kabul and Washington, clearing the way for a US presence in the country for at leasta decade after most foreign combat troops leave in 2014.“Thiswas done for the interest of Afghanistan,” said DaoudKalakani, an MP from Kabul. Around 180 MPs were presentand only four voted against, Kalakani said.

The deal, signed by US President Barack Obama andAfghanistan’s Hamid Karzai in Kabul on 2 May, sets out along-term US role in Afghanistan, including aid andadvisers. Most of the contentious parts of the pact, whichcould have seen the obstructive parliament reject the deal, hadearlier been removed and dealt with separately, includinggiving Afghans control of controversial night raids on homesand prisons used to detain insurgents.— Reuters

UN inspectors find high-gradeuranium traces in Iran

VIENNA, 26 May—United Nations nuclear inspectorshave found uranium particles refined to a higher-than-expectedlevel at an underground site where Iran has installed more than50 percent more enrichment centrifuges, a UN watchdogreport said on Friday. It said Teheran had told the UN agencythat the presence of traces of highly refined uranium — stillwell below potential nuclear weapons-grade material - “mayhappen for technical reasons beyond the operator’s control”.

The United States —which like its Western allies andIsrael accuse Iran of seeking to develop atomic bombcapability — said the Iranian explanation could be correctand a leading US expert said he saw nothing “nefarious” inthe discovery. The International Atomic Energy Agencyreport came a day after six world powers — the United States,Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France — failed toconvince Iran to halt its most sensitive nuclear work during23-24 May talks in Baghdad.

At the heart of the dispute is Iran’s insistence on a rightto enrich uranium and that economic sanctions should belifted before it shelves activities that could lead to its achievingthe ability to assemble nuclear weapons.Western powersinsist Teheran must first shut down higher-grade enrichmentbefore sanctions could be eased.Iran started enriching to afissile concentration of 20 percent in 2010 and has sincesharply expanded the activity, saying the material will serveas fuel for a medical reactor.

But a suspicious West is alarmed since such enhancedenrichment accomplishes much of the technical leap towards90 percent — or weapons-grade — uranium. The IAEA reportsaid environmental samples taken in February at Iran’s Fordowfacility — buried deep beneath rock and soil to protect it fromair strikes — showed the presence of particles with enrichmentlevels of up to 27 percent. That is above the 20 percentenrichment level Iran has declared at the site, and takes itacross the line from low-enriched to high-enricheduranium.”The Agency is assessing Iran’s explanation andhas requested further details,” the IAEA report said.
