LONDON, 17 Nov—Britain should introduce aban on all smoking in cars to protect people fromsecond-hand smoke, a leading doctors’ union saidWednesday.

The British Medical Association (BMA) urgedthe government to take a “bold and courageousstep” and extend current laws to include a ban onsmoking in private vehicles.

Britain banned smoking in public places suchas pubs and restaurants in 2007 but has avoidedlegislating for private areas.

“The UK made a huge step forward in the fightagainst tobacco by banning smoking in all enclosedpublic places, but more can still be done,” saidVivienne Nathanson, the BMA’s director ofprofessional activities.

“We are calling on UK governments to take thebold and courageous step of banning smoking inprivate vehicles. The evidence for extending thesmoke-free legislation is compelling.”

Children and elderly people are the worstaffected, especially because they are often unableto refuse to take a journey in a smoky car, the BMAsaid.

It cited research as showing that levels ofdangerous toxins in cars can be 23 times higherthan in a typical smoky bar.

Around 4,000 adults and 23 children die eachyear as a result of second-hand smoke in Britain, the BMA said.

The British parliament is due on 25 Novemberto debate a bill calling for a smoking ban in privatevehicles when children are present.

Prime Minister David Cameron, a formersmoker, has said he supports the smoking ban inpublic places but is “nervous about going into whatpeople do inside a vehicle.”

British smokers’ lobby group Forest said theevidence that smoking in cars is harmful to otherpassengers is “weak”.—Internet

US study shows exercise better than stents forPAD patients

WASHINGTON, 17Nov—Supervised ex-ercise was shown to bemore effective thanstenting or medicationfor improved walkingability in patients withperipheral artery disease(PAD), according to aUS study reportedWednesday at the 2011American HeartAssociation ScientificSessions meeting.

The research groupreported that of 111patients studied in therandomized trial, themost effective treatmentproved to be supervisedexercise based on theresults of a treadmill testtaken at baseline andagain at six months.Patients who were in thesupervised exercisegroup improved by amean of 4.6 minutes in

the treadmill test, whilethe group who receivedstents improved by amean of 2.5 minutes. However, researchersfound that self-reportedquality of lifemeasurements proved tobe higher in the groupthat received stents, eventhough their ability towalk did not improve asgreatly as the group thatreceived supervisedexercise rehabilitation.

PAD is a conditionin which plaque buildsup in the arteries and

affects blood flow, especially to the legs. Itis estimated thatbetween 10 and 12million people sufferfrom PAD in the UnitedStates. Water lake found in Jupiter moonAUSTIN, 17 Nov—US researchers

say a body of liquid water the volumeof the North American Great Lakes islocked inside the icy shell of Jupiter’smoon Europa.

Scientists at the University of Texasat Austin say that could be a significantfinding in the search for life beyond

Earth, as the water could represent apotential habitat for life and many moresuch lakes might exist throughout theshallow regions of Europa’s shell.

The newly discovered lake iscovered by floating ice shelves thatseem to be collapsing, providing amechanism for transferring nutrientsand energy between the surface and avast ocean already inferred to existbelow the thick ice shell, increasingthe potential for life, they said.

“One opinion in the scientificcommunity has been, ‘If the ice shell isthick, that’s bad for biology — that itmight mean the surface isn’tcommunicating with the underlyingocean,’” Britney Schmidt of theuniversity’s Institute for Geophysicssaid in a UT release Wednesday.

“Now we see evidence that eventhough the ice shell is thick, it can mixvigorously,” she said. “That couldmake Europa and its ocean morehabitable.”—Internet

Secret of frogs’ jumpingprowess revealed

PROVIDENCE, 17 Nov—The ability of frogs toleap several times farther than their physiologywould seem to allow lies in their tendons, not intheir muscles, US researchers say.

Using high-speed X-ray photography, animalscientists at Brown University discovered frogs’tendons stretch as they ready their leaps and thenrecoil much like a spring.

“Muscles alone couldn’t produce jumps thatgood,” Henry Astley, who studies the biomechanicsof frog jumping, said in a Brown releaseWednesday.

Even though as much as a quarter of a frog’smass is in its legs, it would be physically incapableof jumping as far without the tendons’ services, hesaid. “In order to get truly exceptional jumpingperformance, you need some sort of elasticstructure,” Astley said.—Internet

Youth attracted to gangs may require a different approach as they joinlargely for the company and to feel a sense of belonging, said Minister of Statefor Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli, who is the head of the working group setup to look into ways of dealing with the problem following two high-profileattacks last year.

Nineteen-year-old student Darren Ng Wei Jie was hacked to death with achopper after members of a gang accused him of staring. Barely two weekslater, seven people were injured when a group of teenagers attacked them withknives and parangs.

Local media said that the situation in Singapore is well under control andthe two incidents were isolated.—Xinhua

US Postal Service reportsbig loss on shrinking mail

volumesWASHINGTON, 17 Nov—The US Postal Service

(USPS) on Tuesday posted a net loss of 5.1 billionUS dollars for the 2011 fiscal year that ended onSept. 30 as mail volumes continued to drop.

The year-end loss would have been about 10.6billion dollars had it not been approved by Congressto postpone a 5.5-billion-dollar payment for futureretirees’ health benefits into fiscal 2012, said chieffinancial officer Joe Corbett.

The total mail volume declined by 3 billionpieces, or 1.7 percent, from 2010, mainly because ofthe recession and the increasing use of electroniccommunications, the USPS said.

It added that mail volumes have dropped morethan 20 percent in the last five years, and the USPShas been in challenging fiscal situation for severalyears. The USPS may run out of cash to operate bynext September and will default on the benefitspayment later this month, said Corbett, noting thatthe loss last year was 8.5 billion dollars, including abenefits payment.

“To return to profitability we must reduce ourannual costs by 20 billion dollars by the end of2015,” said Patrick Donahoe, Postmaster Generaland CEO, adding that aggressive cost-cutting actionswould be probable. pollution exercise, code-named Oilex 2011, wentinto full damage-control mode.

Headed by Hong Kong’s Marine Department, the exercise simulated the response to a mock oilspill from a beached product tanker.

The scenario was that 5,200 tonnes of leakingfuel oil posed a threat to the cooling water systemof the main power station on Lamma Island, whichsupplies energy to Hong Kong.

Oil combat teams practised setting up a ring offloating barrier booms around the tanker to preventthe mock oil spill from spreading to the beach, apopular leisure spot.

Tuesday’s drill simulates a second-tier oil spill, and these measures aim not only to protect humans, but also animals, as we are near the nesting groundsof Hong Kong’s endangered Green Turtles.

SYDNEY, 17 Nov—Stimulating the brain withmagnets is likely toimprove the languageskills of stroke survivors.

Researchers led byCaroline Barwood fromthe University ofQueensland’s School ofHealth and RehabilitationSciences found markedimprovement in thelanguage skills of strokepatients after theyunderwent TranscranialMagnetic Stimulation(TMS).

TMS is a non-invasive method thatseeks to target brainactivity to facilitate thereorganisation of brainregions with the purposeto alter languagebehaviours, reports TheEuropean Journal ofNeurology.

The treatmentinvolves placing a coilon the participant’s headwhich uses electromag-netic induction to induceweak electric currentsthrough a changing

magnetic field, accordingto a university statement.

A group of patientsthat experienced strokesbetween one and sixyears prior to the studywere recruited forparticipation and treatedat the university’s Centrefor Neurogenic Commu-nication DisordersResearch.

“Eighty percent ofpatients treated with TMSshowed improvementsin language skills, mostnotably in expressive

language, which includesnaming, repetition anddiscourse. No languageimprovements were seenfor those treated withplacebo TMS,” Barwoodsaid.

The researcher saidchanges in patients’language scores weremeasured on standar-dised speech pathologytests. “The researchstrongly demonstratesthat TMS may be a veryuseful and safe treatmentmethod,” she added.

Shrimp has ‘silk-spinning skills’

LONDON, 17 Nov — Atiny underwater creaturespins silk in order to bindtogether its sand grainhouse, researchers havediscovered. The shrimp,Crassicorophium bonellii, produces fibres that com-bine barnacle cement bi-ology with spider silk pro-duction techniques. The

resulting “gossamerthreads” are sticky andsalt-water resistant. TheOxford team says this is anew example of “nature’sway of engineering ahighly functional mate-rial”. Their discovery ispublished in the journalNaturwissenschaften.

One of the authors ofthe study, Prof FritzVollrath from the Univer-sity of Oxford, explainedthat the shrimp releasedthe material through ductson its legs. “It uses thefibres to tie together bitsand bobs to make itshouse,” Prof Vollrath ex-plained to BBC. “It usesgrains of sand, pieces of

vegetation, algae, even itsown faeces.” Although itwas already understoodthat the creature produceda sticky substance fromits legs, the scientists dis-covered that it spins thissubstance into a silk, inmuch the same way thatspiders do — pulling itthrough a duct to make afunctional thread.
