The minister made an opening speech. Then, he met with the players of the teams which would take part in the tournament. The first day events were played. The Graduation Parade of the 5th Intake ofDefence Services Institute of Nursing andParamedical Science took place at the paradeground of the Defence Services Medical Academyin Yangon the other day.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of DefenceServices Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye in his speech said,“Living up to the motto, ‘Competent and helpfulmembers of the Medical Corps’, you comradesshould also provide health care to the peoplewhile playing a role in fulfillinag the nationaldefence duty through your professionalknowledge and expertise. Wherever you areassigned duties, you should care for the localpopulation as if they were your own parents”.

The Defence Services Institute of Nursingand Paramedical Science conducts courses ofBachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor ofScience in Pharmacy, diagnosis, radiology andphysiotherapy. Furthermore, it prescribesmilitary training and training in militaryleadership at the platoon commander level.

The graduates have studied advanced nursingand paramedical science and undergone militarytraining. So, they will soon take charge of militaryduties and paramedical science duties in theDefence Services Medical Corps.

Nursing is indispensable in the health sector.It is such a demanding duty that only those whopossess a noble heart, strong compassion andsympathy, keen goodwill, resilience in the face ofhardship and selflessness can carry out.

The cadets possess physical and mentalprowess and are competent and helpful membersof the Medical Corps. So, they will be able topreserve the fine traditions of the Tatmadaw,while devoting themselves to health care servicefor servicemen and the people.

BAGHDAD, 7 Jan— Two US soldiers were killed inseparate bomb attacks in Iraq this weekend, the USmilitary said on Sunday.

One soldier was killed on Sunday when his vehiclewas hit by a bomb explosion in southern Baghdad, themilitary said in a statement. Three others were woundedin the attack.

The US soldiers were on patrols along with the IraqiArmy and police “in order to disrupt terrorist andextremist elements operating in this section of the Iraqicapital”, the statement said.

On Saturday, a US soldier succumbed to his woundsin a roadside bomb blast in the volatile province ofDiyala, the military said in a statement.

TEHERAN, 7 Jan — Iranhas expelled a Germandiplomat for “non-diplo-matic activities”, the Ira-nian Foreign Ministry saidon Sunday, in what maybe retaliation for theexpulsion of an Iraniandiplomat from Germanyin July.

LAGOS, 7 Jan—Russia’s gas export monopolyGazprom is in talks with Nigeria to spend up to 2.5billion US dollars on developing its vast natural gasreserves, a senior Nigerian gas official said on Saturday.

The Russian company is on a global hunt for newreserves and has emerged as one of the leading suitorsto Africa’s top energy producer as it reforms its gassector.

“Gazprom has come twice to visit the federalgovernment. They want to invest in Nigeria in gasexploitation, gathering and processing,” a seniorNigerian Government official working on gas policytold Reuters.

Gazprom has offered to invest between one billionUS dollars and 2.5 billion US dollars to begin with, headded. A Gazprom spokesman was not immediatelyavailable to comment.

Nigeria is the world’s eighth-biggest exporter ofcrude oil but even though it has the seventh-largestproven gas reserves in the world it has not developedits gas industry to anywhere near full potential.

Investors say the lack of a stable fiscal frameworkand market pricing for gas means that most investmentideas in the sector are uneconomic.

TOKYO, 7 Jan—Japan, theUnited States and theEuropean Union willjointly propose the creationof a new body to act as aninternational commandcentre in efforts to counterglobal warming, a leadingJapanese daily said onSunday.

The proposal would beformally unveiled at aGroup of Eight summiton the Japanese island ofHokkaido in July, theYomiuri newspaper saidwithout quoting specificsources.

The new organizationwould make suggestionson energy conservation

measures for countriessuch as the G-8 leadingindustrialized nations andmembers of the Inter-national Energy Agency,as well as China and India,the newspaper said. Theaim was to transfer deve-loped countries' know-ledge of energy con-servation to other largeenergy consumers and tostudy their effectiveness,Yomiuri said.

The body would createindicators for con-servation related to theamount of fuel or energyused by cars, homeappliances and the in-dustrial sector, and use

the data as the basis forits policy suggestions,Yomiuri said.

The idea of joint fundingby Japan, the United Statesand the European Unionwas being discussed, aswell as the possibility ofsetting up the new bodywithin the InternationalEnergy Agency in Paris,Yomiuri said.

The new organizationwould be discussed at apreparatory meeting ofG-8 energy ministers on22-23 January, and atanother ministerialgathering in Japan in June,the report said.

The railway starts fromXiamen, a port city facingTaiwan, and runs 502.4kilometres southwest alongthe coast to Shenzhen, abooming city borderingHong Kong.

Upon its completion in2011, the railway will allow

trains to travel at a speed of200 kilometres per hour,and a journey between thetwo cities will take aboutthree hours compared withcurrent 11 hours.

The rail link is designedto transport 12 million tonsof cargo a year and ac-commodate 120 pairs oftrains per day.

attending the 10-daycourse which is designedto help youths solve dailyproblems and raise theirawareness of HIV,venereal disease (VD)and the danger of narcoticdrugs.

After completing thecourse, the trainees willalso raise awareness ofHIV, VD and narcoticdrugs among youths. Thecourse will end on 16January.

and about 50 others were injured when a speeding bushit a tanker truck, then another bus on an expresswayin the southern province of Guangdong early onMonday, the local government said.

The speeding bus, en route from Shenzhen toNanning in the neighbouring Guangxi ZhuangAutonomous Region, rear-ended the truck at around1:00 a.m. on an expressway in the coastal city ofZhanjiang, traffic police there said.

The bus then veered across the median of theexpressway and crashed into an oncoming bus thatwas en route from Nanning to Zhuhai.

Police said the injured passengers were beingtreated at several hospitals.

Death toll rises to 40 in S Korea warehouse fire SEOUL, 8 Jan — The death toll from

a fire that ripped through a warehouseunder construction outside of Seoul hasrisen to 40, officials said on Tuesday,with most of the victims overcome bytoxic fumes.

The fire in Icheon, about 60kilometres (40 miles) southeast of theSouth Korean capital, started on Mondayand triggered several explosions.

Fire officials said most of thevictims were construction workerstrapped inside the basement of therefrigerated goods facility who couldnot escape a toxic cloud of gas that camefrom burning insulation material.

The exact cause is not yet knownbut local media said authorities wereinvestigating whether gas caught fire ina basement engine room at thewarehouse, starting the blaze.

Ten workers were taken to hospitaland another seven escaped without majorinjuries, fire officials said. More than600 fire fighters and police weredispatched to the scene.

The fire is the deadliest in SouthKorea since a blaze in the subwaysystem of Daegu, 250 kilometressoutheast of Seoul, killed nearly 200people in 2003.

HANOI, 7 Jan—Vietnam is estimated tomake consumer goodsimport turnovers of 5.7billion US dollars in 2008,up from two billiondollars in 2007, localnewspaper Labour re-ported on Monday.

According to theVietnamese Ministry ofIndustry and Trade,among the country’s allimport items in 2008, upto 66.2 per cent will bematerials and fuels, 26.3per cent machine, equip-ment and components, and

The head of Mozam-bique’s national reliefagency INGC, PauloZucula, said the floodingcaused by torrential rainshad cut major transportlinks to neighbouringcountries. “So far sixpeople drowned and 5,000others have been eva-cuated from rooftops and

LOS ANGELES, 7 Jan — California, where more than100,000 homes remained without power on Sundayafter powerful storms, could still face flooding andmudslides in some areas through Monday, accordingto weather officials.

The US National Weather Service said flood watcheswere in effect through early Monday for SouthernCalifornia and the central coast, particularly in areashit last year by wildfires.

“The hillsides are so saturated in the burn areas, thateven if we don’t see as much rain, it could causemudslides and flooding,” said Carol Singleton, aspokeswoman for the California Governor’s Office ofEmergency Services.

Thai policeman charged withkilling Canadian

BANGKOK, 8 Jan — A Thai police sergeant was charged on Monday withkilling a Canadian and attempting to kill the man’s pregnant ex-wife during anargument between the tourists in the northern tourist town of Pai, the local policechief said.

Sergeant UthaiDechawiwat was allowed towalk free during theinvestigation because heturned himself in after whathe said was an accident andpromised not to tamper withwitnesses, Pai police chiefWanchai Suwanririkate said.

Wanchai quoted wit-nesses as saying Uthai, whohad just finished his shift,was asked to stop a fightbetween John Leo DelPinto, 25, and his ex-wifeCarly Reisig, 24, on

Saturday night. But the man, 1.8 metres

(5 feet 11inches) tall, and hisex-wife turned on the 5 feet3 inches policeman, whopulled out his pistol whenthey started beating him,they were quoted as saying.

“The policeman, whois about 1.6 metres, wasbeaten to the ground by theman, a bodybuilder 1.8-metre tall, and the hippywoman,” Wanchai said.

Del Pinto tried tosnatch the pistol, shots were

fired and the couple fell,according to witnesses,Wanchai added.

Del Pinto, a frequentvisitor to Pai, died at thescene. Reisig was beingtreated in a hospital in nearbyprovince of Chiang Mai andher wounds were not lifethreatening, Wanchai said.

Jordanian Royal AirForce plane crashedSunday afternoon duringa routine trainingmission, killing its twopilots, official newsagency Petra reported.

The report quoted anofficial military sourcefrom the Jordan ArmedForces as saying that thepilots were identified asRidwan Salim MahmoudAbabneh and YazanBassam Hanna Arnaki.
