Greetings neighbors!
It’s hard to believe that September has arrived! That means Autumn is just around the corner. We are getting ready to welcome Fall with our annual neighborhood picnic on September 10 from 4:30-6:30 at Victory Baptist Church. This is always a great family event and I sincerely hope you will join us and share some time with your neighbors. There will be great food (thanks to Steve Sergi for once again sponsoring the picnic and providing the fried chicken!) and activities for the whole family. We have a couple of special guests lined up to join us and we are hoping to have representatives from IMPD and IFD (maybe a fire truck!) on hand as well. Please mark your calendar and join us on September 10!
We are also still in the middle of our annual membership drive for the Civic Association. If you haven’t had a chance to pay your 2017-18 dues, please try to do so soon. Your membership dues help us to put on great events like the neighborhood picnic each year. They also are critical in what comes next...keeping our streets clear during the winter months. Member-ship dues are still a bargain at $45 per year and help us continue to do the things that make this a great place to live!
On a more somber note, we began last month with news of the tragic car accident that occurred in the neighborhood. It was a stark reminder that we need to be careful out on our streets, whether driving, walking, or biking. Our neighbor-hood streets are full of life with walkers, joggers, and bicycles enjoying the serenity of the neighborhood. Despite that, we continue to have problems with speed in the neighborhood, especially on the through streets such as Brokenhurst and Knyghton. We also continue to have problems at the morning and afternoon school bus stops with cars not stopping for stopped buses or passing busses as kids are getting dropped off. Both of these issues raise the possibility for more trag-edy in the neighborhood. To help address these issues, we are working with IMPD to request random speed patrols and bus stop patrols over the coming months to help highlight and address these problems. Please be aware that this will be occurring. If you are driving through the neighborhood, please keep your speeds down and please be patient and mind-ful at bus stops when the kids are getting on and off of the bus. We want this to be a safe place for our families.
If you follow the neighborhood on Facebook or follow the Next Door app, you are aware that there are changes coming to the I-465/I-69 interchange. INDOT has begun their environmental assessment for the reconstruction of the interchange and held their first public meeting this past month at Heritage Christian School to share the alternatives being exam-ined. This is the first step in the redesign of the interchange. Several board members attended the public meeting. Most notable in the alternatives is the reduction of all of the merging lanes at the current intersection. INDOT is taking public comments and I encourage residents to review the alternatives and provide feedback. The link to the public comment forms can be found at: http://www.in.gov/indot/3659.htm. Construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2020. Devonshire III & VI Meeting Minutes
The August 2017 meeting was held at the home of Sally Roscetti at 6260 Green Leaves Road on August 21, 2017 at 7pm. Most of the meeting was spent in finalizing the plans for the neighborhood Fall Picnic.
The July minutes were approved.
In absentia, Paul Aikins let us know that we have received 213 out of 424 dues payments thus far, bringing our checking balance to about $24,922. The next wave of collection postcards will be sent within the next week to the approximately 200 households that haven’t yet made their payment. Further treasurer information will be in the September Crier.
Denny Dinn led a board discussion on the fatal car accident that occurred on Knyghton in July. He also noted that there had been a car pulled over in the neighborhood and the driver arrested for leaving the scene of an accident. He had no other crimes to report. Ron Taylor noted that there continue to be speeding car incidents on Brokenhurst. Denny suggested that the Board contact IMPD and arrange a patrol of trouble spots for both speeding and for school bus-stop issues.
Kate Thedwall shared that she knows there will be several new sales in the neighborhood in August and September so there will need to be Welcome baskets ready for the block captains. Kate is planning to give a short presentation at the September board meeting that is an update and overview of the neighborhood block captain process.
Sally Roscetti noted that she has received a lot of information from residents concerning the flooding that occurs in the neighborhood. She is keeping a file of these complaints for us to use as we contact the city concerning these issues. We have plans to do that in conjunction with the Binford Medical Plaza purchase that is in progress. Sally encourages all residents to also make an individual complaint to the Mayor’s Action Center—the more the city hears from us on a subject the more likely that issue will be addressed. 317-327-4622 or http://maps.indy.gov/RequestIndy/
Significant time was spent on final details and coordination of the Fall picnic being held on September 10, 2017 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. TWO speakers are confirmed and we have invited both the police department and the fire department. Steve Sergi will be providing the fried chicken and there will also be hot dogs as an entrée. Sides, salads, and desserts are coming from the rest of us.
Ron Taylor reported that the website has been updated (https://devonshireiiiandvicivicassociation.wordpress.com/about/ --it looks great!). He started a new feature in the Crier a couple of months ago called “Great Ideas for Your Home” that is getting a lot of praise. He’s going to start another piece entitled “Life in the Neighborhood” which will remind us of why we choose to live here. He is requesting ideas, pictures, and writers for upcoming stories.
The Board discussed the recent temporary move to Monday nights for our meetings; Ron is going to investigate the possibility of moving all future monthly meetings permanently to Mondays because of the Board members’ schedules. We’ll discuss this at the September meeting. We also hope to have some member or members of the Architectural Committee attend the September meeting for an accounting of how that committee works.
There being no further business and no new business the meeting was adjourned.
The next neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, September 18th at Sheryl Holko’s home at 6385 Brixton Lane at 7pm. All board members and ALL neighbors are invited AND ENCOURAGED to attend.

There were two reports of someone trying to open house doors during the night. This happens in other neighborhoods as well. Please be sure doors and windows are closed and locked after dark and turn your alarm on, if available. Also, be sure your car is locked and a garage door opener is not left in a car outside. Leave nothing in your car, a burglar will break a car window to check an empty gym bag, for example.
Exterior lighting is the number one deterrent to night time crime.
The new Nextdoor Social Media site has many reports of suspicious activity. Too many to keep track of. Our neighborhood remains one of the safest due to the vigilance of our residents to call 911 immediately to report suspicious persons or vehicles. One report is persons checking mailboxes. They are not putting in flyers. They may be looking for outgoing mail containing checks, or looking to see if a house is vacant or the owners are on vacation and not having someone pick up their mail.
Neighbors are still reporting speeders and those not stopping for school buses or stop signs. Please contact IMPD traffic division to file a report. See the last page of the CRIER for contact information.

LIFE in the NEIGHBORHOOD
The American Sweetgum TreeFor many of us, September marks the beginning of Autumn as the temperatures being to fall, the daylight grows noticeably less, and the leaves begin their last delicate dance and transition in color. With the mix of older tree and plant species in the neighborhood, we experience beautiful Autumns here in Devonshire.
My favorite tree in terms of fall foliage is the American Sweetgum tree. The American Sweetgum tree (Liquidambar styracifula) is native to the southeastern portion of the United States. Here in Indianapolis, we are on the very northern fringe of its hardy zone which may explain its spectacular fall color. The tree can grow up to 80’ tall. It is easily identified by its star-shaped leaves and its spiky gumball fruit pods. It also has a distinguishable bark pattern of deep furrows that resembles the skin of an alligator.
If you have one of these trees in your yard, it is the tree you love to hate. The tree is most noted for its hard fruit pods (usually called gumballs)--- a single native tree can literally drop thousands of the hard, spiny balls each season and will make your yard a mess. I have three of these trees in my yard and the number of gumballs they drop in the spring is incredible and time consuming to clean up. But there is also beauty in the tree that brings out some of the most beautiful sights and smells of Autumn.
Even if you hate the tree and its pesky gumballs, it’s hard to hold a grudge against it when its fall colors start to appear. The tree’s fall color is unlike any other tree! While the leaves on most trees tend to turn a single color each fall, the Sweetgum tree goes through a whole series of color changes that span all of the fall colors. As Fall begins, the leaves start to turn yellow but then will transition to an orange, then red, and ultimately to a deep burgundy color before finally dropping to the ground. And most of the time, this transition takes longer than the other trees meaning that the leaves will stay on the trees longer than most trees once they have begun the cycle of color change. It makes for a longer and spectacular display.
But what makes the Sweetgum tree even more spectacular in the Fall is its smell! If you rip one of its leaves or cut one of the gumballs with a knife, there is a spice smell that can only be described as “pure Fall.” Each year, instead of raking our leaves, I mulch the leaves with my mower and the process fills the air with this unique scent. Its unmistakable once you know what it is!
So before you curse your American Sweetgum trees, make sure to pay attention to what happens to it this Fall. It may just become your favorite tree.
