When the decision was made to add an ethnic hair magazine to our family, I was excited to see where the new publication would take us. I knew that the South African hair industry needed a high quality ethnic hair magazine and therefore it would be well received. I also knew that it would be a welcomed challenge for me, a Caucasian red head, to understand the needs and concerns of African hair. However, I had no idea what an impact ESTETICA AFRO would make on the international community. Content from our first two magazines has been published through the international ESTETICA network which is viewed across the world. This proves that our local knowledge and expertise in the ethnic hair industry is in demand and sought after. This year has also produced some exciting events within the afro hair industry. On 11 and 12 August the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg hosted the African International Hair Extravaganza. This event created an amazing platform for industry leaders to launch and introduce new products and showcase upcoming trends. I look forward to seeing more opportunities like this for local hair professionals to get involved in. The Royal Hairstyles academy hosted its first annual Miss Royal Hairstyles Scholarship Pageant, pages 48-49. The company was looking to identify five brand ambassadors to help market its business. This afforded five students the opportunity to further their training and become part of an up and coming brand. My most memorable initiative this year so far and one that I am proud to have witnessed, was the Intercoiffure Education For Life salon hand-over at Christel House in Cape Town. This event paid homage to the generosity and kindness that exists within the industry and can be seen on pages 50-51.Another true inspiration is local radio and television personality, model and style icon, Bonang Matheba. I chatted to Bonang about her success in the entertainment industry and everything to do with fashion on pages 60-63.I am proud to be a part of this dynamic industry, filled with creativity and interesting people. The best part of it all is that I get to share it all with you.

Happy reading!

Brands such as Dr. Miracle’s, Frika, Ruutos Hair and Fabulous Hair Extentions exhibited their latest products at the event.

Herman Mashabas’ Black Like Me and Jabu Stone. As a result, the National Youth Development Agency provided small business development workshops for hair salon and beauty spa owners and aspiring entrepreneurs on how to start and grow your hair salon business as well as how to access funding.Hair and beauty enthusiasts that attended the two day event were treated to shows, educational talks and prizes. The Complete School of Hair, Beauty and Make-up presented a full one-year beauty scholarship worth R38 000 and a two-year hair and make-up scholarship programme worth R78 000 to two lucky winners at the event. Courtesy of Nexsheen Arganics, internationally renowned hairstylist from the United States, Tamyla McElroy, was present. Tamyla specialises in everything from cutting and colour techniques to the newest innovations in weave and natural hair care. Not only does Tamyla work as a hairstylist, she is also the organiser of one of the largest hair competitions in the South East United States: Hair Invasion. Her expertise and talent was invaluable to this year’s Ethnique Hair & Beauty Show. Exhibitors included Nexsheen Arganics, Silky Hair, Naturalz ‘N Mo, Xtls Dreadlocks Specialist, Global Pact and many more. The large turnout and attendance was testament to the success of the exhibition and we look forward to new and exciting things at next year’s event.

he annual Ethnique Hair & Beauty Show took place at Maponya Mall in

Soweto on 27-29 October 2012. The exhibition is designed to provide a marketing platform for consumers to have access to new hair and beauty products in the market, have an opportunity to engage on a face-to-face basis with hair and beauty product manufacturers and distributors, and introduce new products into the market. The theme for this year was ‘skills development, skills transfer and entrepreneurship development’. The hair industry in South Africa generates over R900-million annually, however, it is a neglected industry because it is not considered a big business. Small enterprises are an important source of job creation, especially among previously disadvantaged groups. This was a statement reiterated during the 2011 budget speech when the Finance Minister highlighted that those businesses that employ fewer than 10 workers account for 68 percent of the private sector employment. Many have dismissed the significance of providing hair salons, beauty spa’s and mechanical workshops with business loans and business support services, arguing that it creates a culture of ‘thinking small’. However, continued support for these small enterprises may empower them to create substantial jobs and have the potential to grow into high-end hair salons, and hair product manufacturers like

The M O T I O N S and TRESemmé Sheer Glamour Hair Show set the scene for the opening of SA Fashion Week with a fusion of fashion and beautifully sculpted hair. Some of South Africa’s leading hair stylists, including Nthato Mashishi, Apo Makhale and Xoliswa Katsio, as well as internationally renowned USA hair stylist Ursula Stephen, showcased the latest trend-defi ning looks.

M O T I O N S put hair on a pedestal and allowed it to take centre stage, as women were shown how to get amazing looks in a fun, yet functional way. The dramatic, drop dead and avant-garde hair styles were offset by clothing from leading SA designers including Suzanne Heyns, Vesselina Pentcheza, Sister Bucks, Tiaan Nagel, Rubicon, Clive Rundle and Black Coffee.
