estern Days 2010 “Golden Anniversary Gusher!” was truly a gusher – with gross proceeds of $574,401 and net proceeds of $505,783 breaking all previous Western Days records. This year the event had special meaning for Saint Simeon’s as it coincided with the Home’s 50th Anniversary. It was very fitting that the Honorary Chairs were the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and The Episcopal Church Women in rec- ognition and appreciation of their efforts throughout the past fifty years that have helped establish Saint Simeon’s as a leader in senior living and wellness. The Diocese was rep- resented by The Rt. Rev. Dr. Edward J. Konieczny and The Episcopal Church Women by Jan Ridle, ECW President. Bishop Ed noted, “For 50 years Saint Simeon’s has been a place of peace, comfort and consolation for residents in the autumn of their lives.” Over 650 supporters gathered for the “Golden Anniversary Gusher!” on September 14, at Central Park Hall at EXPO Square. Guests attending Western Days 2010 enjoyed bidding on over 120 silent auction items. Homemade baked items donated by the Saint Simeon’s staff and hand sewn items made by the Resident sewing group, “Stitch In Time,” were available for purchase in the “General Store.” In addi- tion, guests enjoyed a “wine pull,” door prizes, and a raffle for a $2,500 Utica Square Shopping Spree. Everyone was led to dinner with “two-step” dancing by “Just Gotta Dance” cloggers. Event Chair for Western Days 2010 was Will Smith, who also serves as Vice-President of Saint Simeon’s Foundation. Smith and his committees exceeded this year’s goal of $500,000 with all of the proceeds helping Saint Simeon’s to continue offering the personalized care and activities that provide the best quality of life possible for all 180 Residents. Smith thanked everyone attending for their “unwavering” support for Saint Simeon’s. For the first time Western Days volunteers included Event Chairs-Elect. Peggy and Tom Schroedter, who served in this capacity, assisted Will Smith and his committee chairs and will serve as Event Chairs for Western Days 2011. Patron Chairs, Margaret and Ross Swimmer, pro- vided wonderful leadership in recruiting a record number of patrons and sponsors. Stuart Spencer, Executive Chairman of Saint Simeon’s Board of Trustees, reminded those attending that, “Your presence and participation tonight is important in fulfilling the mission of Saint Simeon’s as we embark on the second half of our first century.”

Robin Ballenger, President of Saint Simeon’s Foundation Board, encouraged the crowd to, “Bid early! Bid often! Bid higher!” Tommy Williams, volunteer auctioneer, then led the bidders in a competitive Live Auction of incredible trips and special dinners. A “Heavenly Dinner” was the hit of the evening with a dinner for 10 to be prepared by Bishop Ed Konieczny and his wife, Debbie. Other highlighted din-ner parties included Polo Grill, Local Table, Brownie’s, the Deisenroth Bistro at Saint Simeon’s and a special dinner prepared by six Episcopal priests.

Additional Live Auction high bidders will experience exciting stays at vacation homes in wonderful locations including Colorado, Grand Lake, Santa Fe, Texas, St. Martin and Washington, D.C. Other high bidders will

enjoy golf at Southern Hills Country Club, golf at the Patriot Golf Club, and a tour at the CBS News Studios in New York. Special packages also included a Marshall Brewery Tour catered by Blue Dome Diner and football game packages for OSU and OU.

At the conclusion of the Live Auction, Auctioneer Tommy Williams called for “Lots of Love” donations from guests preferring to make direct cash donations to help Saint Simeon’s provide the care and services Residents deserve.

As is the tradition of this event, volunteers make it hap-pen. Over 100 volunteer Advisory and Patron Committee members, plus over 70 other volunteers worked the weeks before and the night of the event to ensure the sponsors and guests enjoyed the celebration.

Saint Simeon’s is very blessed to have friends and supporters who believe in the mission of the Home. We especially thank the sponsors and donors who through their generosity demonstrate why Saint Simeon’s is the “Home Built on Love!”

The celebration of Western Days 2010 began on September 2nd as Saint Simeon’s Residents were treated to a special Pre-Western Days Party. Festivities started with the “Round-Up,” featuring games, a cake walk, “cow patty” throwing contest, piñata pony roping with prizes and refreshments. At “high noon” Residents in all dining areas of the Home were served a special western-style menu with all the fixin’s. The finale, “Western Gala,” featured musical

entertainment by singer Janet Rutland with her husband, Shelby Eicher, playing the fiddle and accompanied on the piano by Spencer Sutton as Residents enjoyed a buffet of fruit, cheese and sweets.

We extend our thanks to Robin Ballenger for generously underwriting this special event; Elaine Hanner, Resident Western Days Party Chair; and the wonderful volunteers at the morning and afternoon events.

Pody Bost, a native Oklahoman and daughter of the first woman to graduate from OK A&M College (now OSU), also graduated from OK A&M. After a 25 year career in business, she followed her passion and became an elemen-tary school teacher. Pody loved her family and church, playing golf, traveling and her roses.

Marge Lund graduated from Oklahoma College for Women. She became an educator - teaching physical educa-

tion and later obtaining a master’s degree as a counselor. Marge and Pody met on a trip to South America and became traveling companions for many years. Marge’s interests were her church, golfing and playing trombone in a jazz band.

The long-time friends were members of the Society of Saint Simeon’s, Lifetime Members of Saint Simeon’s Auxiliary and Residents of Saint Simeon’s. Pody & Marge co-chaired the Auxiliary Ice Cream Social for 15 years!

Western Days Chairs 2010

Stuart Spencer, Board of Trustees Executive Chairman, with his wife Deborah Guests enjoyed good food and good conversation before the bidding began.

very time I write a short piece for the Ambiance I am surprised at how quickly time has passed. And equally surprised at how much has happened.

2010 has been a year of transition as we officially settled in to our new Dotson Center

Assisted Living. The increased number of apartments has brought us new Assisted Living Residents – it’s been wonderful to see our family expand. Residents throughout Saint Simeon’s have enjoyed new venues for parties, cooking demonstrations, fine dining experiences, billiards and much more.

Another wonderful transition is that of our wellness pro-gram. The addition of the fabulous facilities of our Wellness Center opened new opportunities for Residents. Especially the pool, it’s definitely a favorite. I feel certain swimsuit sales in Tulsa have increased! I love going by the Wellness Center to see what’s happening. However, it can be quite convicting to see Residents working out or doing water exercise in the pool while knowing that my own wellness regimen needs improvement!

Yet another change – and quite a major one – was the demolition of the former Assisted Living buildings. Removal of those wings said good-bye to many years of Saint Simeon’s history. While sad, it was definitely time. And now, in their place, is a beautiful green expanse with many original flower beds still intact! The area was officially

named Eckel Park and will be bring many years of beauty.

As we near the end of the year we’re about the begin another trans-formation. The Memory Center, opened in 1994, will have a complete renovation. What started the year as a $500,000 renovation, with a lim-ited scope, has grown to an almost $2,000,000 project. The more expan-sive project is a tribute to Saint Simeon’s Board of Trustees, Building and Grounds Committee. Saint Simeon’s is truly blessed by Trustees that are committed to the best for all Residents.

As we draw near to the end of 2010 it is heartwarming to reflect on the privilege we are given each day to love those entrusted to our care. I know I speak for all my fellow staff when I say – we are thankful to be a part of Saint Simeon’s.

hyllis and George Dotson, Trustees and volunteers for Saint Simeon’s for over 25 years, have recently been named by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) as recipients of the 2010 Excellence in Leadership Award. This award is given in

recognition of leadership excellence and accountability in alignment with the principles of Quality First. The AAHSA Quality First Covenant is a promise by its members to pledge to provide the maximize quality of care and quality of life for older adults.

Phyllis and George received their award at AAHSA’s Annual Meeting & Exposition in Los Angeles on November 1, 2010. Attending the conference and award presentation were Lindsay Hurley Fick, President/CEO of Saint Simeon’s; Stephen Mason, Executive Director of Saint Simeon’s Foundation; along with Karen Stanhope, Admissions Director, and Mary Miller, Business Manager. Lindsay Fick noted, “Phyllis and George Dotson are truly deserving of this award. Their dedication, as Trustees and supporters of the Home, is extraordinary. Their vision for Saint Simeon’s and their commitment to bringing that vision to fruition ensures that Saint Simeon’s will continue its legacy for yet another 50 years.”

In their announcement, AAHSA noted that George and Phyllis are being honored “as transformational governance leaders in expanding and enhancing services for older persons

and those who care for them. As trustees and volunteers, you were instrumental in raising $3.2 million in 2005 to remodel Saint Simeon’s health care center. As co-chairs of a campaign to fund the home’s new assisted living and wellness centers, you raised another $23.3 million in 24 months. As a result of your leadership, generous personal gifts, and relationships with others in the community, the modern, well-equipped centers were completed and opened in 2009 with no long-term debt…As fervent ambassadors for the residents of Saint Simeon’s, you have inspired many others to get involved, as well. Your concerted efforts have paved the road of success for the organization’s next 50 years for the seniors who choose to call Saint Simeon’s ‘home’.”

Stephen Mason states, “Many thoughts of appreciation come to mind when I think of Phyllis and George Dotson but what really comes to the forefront is “love in action” and 1 John 3:18, “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” The Residents, Families and Staff of Saint Simeon’s are fortunate to have two individuals whose actions speak much louder than their words. At 10:00 a.m. they are asking one of Tulsa’s largest donors to join with them in supporting the Home and then at 1:30 p.m. George is walking our hillside planting grass seed. Or, Phyllis is visiting with a Resident to learn more about their life. The examples of their selfless actions are endless…to the benefit of Saint Simeon’s.”

AAHSASaint Simeon’s is an active member of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) as well as the state organization, Oklahoma Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (OKAHSA.) The members of AAHSA help millions of individuals and their families every day through mission-driven, not-for-profit organizations dedicated to providing the services that people need, when they need them, in the place they call home. Their 5,700 member organizations, many of which have served their communities for generations, offer the continuum of aging services: adult day services, home health, community services, senior housing, assisted living residences, continuing care retirement communities and nursing homes. AAHSA’s commitment is to create the future of aging services through quality people can trust.

Residents of Saint Simeon’s Stitch In Time sewing group have been sewing “weighted blankets” for some very special children who attend the Little Light House. Led by Teresa Reno, Life Enrichment Activities Coordinator, the group met several times a week for nearly a year with Marie Millar, Resident, and Stella Reynolds, Resident Assistant/CNA, sewing the blankets made of colorful soft material and weighted by bean bags. Other Residents including Nan Balman, Velma Austen, Jane Fair, Millie Brown, Mildred Carroll, Elizabeth Turnbull, Kay Welch, Vivian Lassiter and Charlotte Stewart assisted with the project by stuffing the bean bags and cutting material.

The Little Light House is a school which provides pro-grams for children, from birth to the chronological age of six, who have a wide range of physically and mentally chal-lenging conditions.

According to Anne McCoy, OT/L, Occupational Therapist at the Little Light House, the weight in the blan-ket helps provide deep pressure (proprioceptive input) into the child’s body. Many of the Little Light House students have an impaired awareness of proprioception, which is the ability to sense the position and location and orientation and movement of the body and its parts. This can cause the child to lack a clear sense of his/her body parts and what to do with them. The child may often feel “lost in space.”

When they feel the sensation of the weight in the blanket it makes them feel anchored, more secure and more organized in their body. This has an overall comforting effect on the child; adding to a sense of well-being. McCoy noted, “The children love the weighted blankets!” She expressed her thanks to Saint Simeon’s Stitch In Time sewing group for “caring about our kids.”

In April the Auxiliary’s Tree of Dreams committee made it possible for several of the Stitch In Time ladies, to attend the Little Light House Brunch benefit. The group had a lovely time, and it was made even more special by the opportunity to meet some of the children who benefit from the weighted blankets they had lovingly made.

orrison Management Specialists, who provides dining services at Saint Simeon’s, is a national company focused on providing food service for hospitals and senior living communities. There are over 20,000 associates directly employed by Morrison

nationwide and more associates who report to Morrison but are employed through the facility. Every three months, Morrison recognizes ten people regionally for going above and beyond their normal duties. Nationally, that is about 80 people every quarter, who are given a gift card and a certificate of recognition under their signature ‘Be A Star’ program. This year Saint Simeon’s Morrison associates have received this honor six times, with at least one person recognized each quarter.

Annually, all the ‘Be A Star’ recipients are shortlisted to be the ‘Regional People First Champion.’ Jonathan Kincaid, one of our dietary servers, was recognized with this honor. Additionally, the regional award recipients are then further shortlisted to be among six national winners, and Jonathan will be receiving that honor as well next month.

Here’s the reason Jonathan was recognized -

“Jonathan Kincaid was Saint Simeon’s Star Employee for May. He was nominated for his continued contributions at Saint Simeon’s. Jonathan began as a utility worker, but has always been willing to help with production and dining room service when needed. On two occasions, he took on the role of the breakfast cook.

For one of these ‘above and beyond’ occasions, Jonathan was nominated by Morrison for its “Be A Star” Award. On Christmas Day 2009 when Tulsa experienced one its worst snowstorms, Jonathan was among the first employees to arrive at Saint Simeon’s. He was scheduled as the dishwasher that day, but when he realized that no one from the production crew had made it in, he started cooking so that the Residents would have their Christmas breakfast on time. When the scheduled cooks arrived, Jonathan

headed to the dining rooms to help serve since they were shorthanded as well. After cooking and serving, he completed his normal duties with a smile on his face, modestly saying that he just did what needed to be done.

Jonathan is a great team member, who gets along with everyone and is always positive about everyday that he is here. We are very fortunate to have him on our team. He makes our days easier and lot brighter!”

Thanks to the efforts of Jonathan and the other team members who have contributed to serving the Residents with such dedication, and through the implementation of programs -- such as the monthly Bistro Fine Dining dinners, the Farmer’s Markets to raise funds for the Resident vegetable garden, the expanded ‘Always Available Menu,’ the institution of improved hydration programs for Residents and a substantial snack program, and developing several associates internally toward supervisory positions -- Morrison at Saint Simeon’s has additionally been recognized as the “Senior Living Account of the Year”. Ashwin Shrinivas, Dietary Director for Morrison’s at Saint Simeon’s states, “We are honored to receive this award for our accomplishment and hope to continue to serve the Residents and community with the values of ‘Great People, Great Service’ for years to come.”

8 Ambiance Fall 2010

All successful events are a result of the efforts of many people. In the case of Saint Simeon’s 50th Anniversary Homecoming Picnic, there was an army of volunteers who met, planned and worked diligently to execute a festive and entertaining day. This ‘army’ was made up of Saint Simeon’s Managers, Employees, Board members, Auxiliary members and several spouses.

The Homecoming Picnic was held on June 19 for Residents, Saint Simeon’s & Morrison Employees, Board members, Auxiliary members and all their families. The event was planned and chaired by Bonnie Gorrell, Human Resources Director, with committee members Stephen Mason, Karen Garren, Becky Ashwill, Chris Gruszeczki and Jaunise Mason.

Volunteers assisted guests with activities including Belly Bounce & Princess Castle, face painting, Clonky the Clown shaping balloon animals, carnival games and an old-fashioned cake walk.

Guest grillers had a hot job, but never waivered. Serving up traditional grilled hot dogs with all the fixings were

George & Jana Harrington, Caron Lawhorn, Robin Ballenger, Lindsay and Ron Fick, Deborah Baker, Fr. Bill Holly, Stuart Spencer, and Sue Slama.

Did everyone enjoy the Dog Agility demonstration? Donna Mayotte brought her own dog, Mesa, to show off his award-winning skills. Even Simone II got in the act. The miniature horses were here, thanks to Trudy and Tommy Williams.

On the entertainment side, Bruce Austin, son of Resident Velma Austin, was wonderful! The ‘Just Gotta Dance’ cloggers were a hit. They also performed at Western Days.

The Saint Simeon’s Talent Show brought out some known and some

unknown talent. For vocal talent, Resident Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. reminded us that patriotism is always important with his rendition of “God Bless America.” Other vocal talent included: ‘Cowgirl’ Chris Gruszeczki; Fr. Bill Holly; Donna Olivier and Sherry James; Micah Luna’s daughter, Barbie; and Julie Wood and her

husband, Bud. There’s only one magician at

Saint Simeon’s - Teresa Reno! Last but not least, everyone enjoyed the dancing talents of Blake Jenkins, grandson of Resident Mable Rice; and Laverne Shaw.

Assisting with all of the set up and clean up was Saint Simeon’s wonderful Facilities Management Department, who’s unfailing behind the scenes efforts are always appreciated. Special thanks to Morrison Senior Dining for their assistance with the food and beverages.

What a wonderful day and special way to celebrate our 50th year at “the home built on love!”

As the first anniversary approached, coinciding with Saint Simeon’s 50th Anniversary, Mary Nole, Wellness Coordinator, planned the Wellness Center’s “Saint Simeon’s 600” to celebrate. The goal for this competition was to have 600 Resident participations in Wellness Center programs for the month of September. Residents and staff members in each area competed. Although staff members do not use the equipment or participate in the programs, they are instrumental in encouraging Residents to come to the Wellness Center and in escorting them.

Memory Center won the greatest percentage (64%) of Residents participating and received special “I’m a Winner” t-shirts.

Dotson Family Assisted Living Center won the greatest number (204) of Resident participations and received special water bottles.

In October Saint Simeon’s held its 3rd Annual Competency Fair, the “brainchild” of Saint Simeon’s Director of Nursing, Sue Slama. Clinical Resource Nurse, Crystal Johnson, organizes the event. The Competency Fair is an opportunity for the entire staff – Nursing, Life Enrichment, Facilities Services, Facilities Management, Dietary, Administration, Everyone! – to review important skills and information, as well as learn about the work of other departments.

The Competency Fair is held over a two week period and involves two components: the Competency Written Exam and the Skills Assessment. Both cover all departments and topics – Resident Rights, Saint Simeon’s Mission and Philosophy, proper telephone etiquette, emergency procedures, MSDS, proper lifting techniques, infection control, proper temperatures, and much more.

The Competency Written Exam (which has grown to 32 pages) is a mixture of multiple choice and true/false questions. Each department is responsible for submitting the questions and answers pertinent to their area. Additionally, each department creates story boards with most, if not all, of the subject matter on the board. The entire exam is taken by ALL employees (frontline and management).

The story boards are set on tables in our common corridors and everyone utilizes that information to take the exam. Employees are able to take the exam together or ask anyone for correct answers. The exam is “open-book” giving everyone the opportunity to help each other and solidify their own knowledge (the best way to learn is to teach!). The story boards are up for approximately two weeks so everyone has plenty of time to take the exam.

The Competency Fair ends with the Skills Assessment. A station for each “competency” is set up in the Common Room and is made available during every shift. For non-nursing staff this includes proper hand washing, proper use of a fire extinguisher, proper emergency procedures, MSDS, etc. The nursing assessment expands to include appropriate nursing and CNA protocols. This “hands on” experience is educational and fun at the same time.

Lindsay Fick, President/CEO states, “Saint Simeon’s competency fair is both a hallmark for effective training and assessment of skills and a best practice in the field of long term care. The benefits of the fair are exhibited by each department in their day-to-day duties, and the bonus always turns out to be that it’s fun to boot!”

Mary Nole assists Residents Juanita Jones and Art Rubin.

Resident Fr. Bob Evans uses equipment in the Workout Room.

Although the Bishop Moody Wellness Center is only one year old, it has already become an integral part of the culture at Saint Simeon’s. Dr. Mary Nole, Wellness Coordinator, views the role of Wellness Center programs as more than providing activities. She believes, as the American College of Sports Medicine states, exercise is medicine. Programs at Saint Simeon’s Wellness Center emphasize movement and exercise integrated into the Resident’s life style. This means Residents may require fewer medications, feel more comfortable, and experience less pain; and staff members observe happier, healthier Residents.

Lindsay Fick, President/CEO, notes that since the Wellness Center opened she has heard nothing but rave reviews. “This has been better than we could have imag-ined.” She states that providing such programs and services is a fairly new concept in long term care.

In order to appeal to the wide variety of Residents’ interests there are many programs offered in the Studio, Workout Room and the warm water pool, which has become the “crown jewel” of the Wellness Center. An aggressive schedule of classes is offered Monday through Friday with additional “open pool” times every afternoon.

Those looking for “dry land” exercises can come to the Studio for Sittercise, Stretch & Strengthen, Back-Chi or competitive games of Baggo or horseshoes. The Workout Room is equipped with machines especially designed for the Residents. In the Get Movin’ class Residents walk, ride and stride on the machines.

Our Gluteus Machine is being used for a senior project study conducted by ORU professor, Dr. Suzanne Vincent, and her student, Roy Galbraith, an Exercise Science Major. The six Residents participating were given a baseline assess-ment measuring leg strength, endurance, coordination,

mobility and core stability. The 8 week study will assess whether exercising on the Gluteus Machine twice a week will increase hip and gluteus muscle strength. Results are expected to show increased mobility, stability and balance, as well as reduction of hip pain. Dr. Nole plans to continue the program recording the results beyond the conclusion of study.

It should be noted that the Wellness Center provides meaningful programs for all Residents – meeting the needs of those in Independent Living, Assisted Living, Health Care Center and Memory Center. Nothing emphasizes this more than the schedule for the warm water pool – from Water 101 (for those just starting) to the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program to special classes for Health Care and Memory Center Residents. All of the programs mix range of motion and strengthening exercises with fun!

Residents who are confined to wheelchairs on dry land suddenly find themselves buoyant and able to stand. Of course, everyone enjoys sitting and relaxing in front of the water jets at the end of a workout in the pool. And last but not least among pool opportunities, Residents and their families are invited for Family Swim Day – the last Saturday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

All of this is made possible through the efforts of Mary Nole and her staff, Taneé VanPelt and Dan Kirkpatrick. In addition, volunteer Swim Buddies assist with Residents in the pool, offering companionship and assistance. They are trained about water safety, monitoring body positions and the use of floatation “noodles.” During the past year eight Swim buddies who are friends or family members of Residents have volunteered in the Wellness Center. Anyone interested in the Swim Buddy program should contact Mary Nole at 918.794.1905.

Many thanks to all who helped make the Ice Cream Social a success! We appre-ciate the special effort from everyone—Auxiliary members, the Saint Simeon’s Staff, and Morrison. We thank Jana and George Harrington, Event Chairs, for their leadership and planning.

Special thanks to Blue Bell Creameries for providing the ice cream and to

Morrison Senior Dining for providing the cookies & disposables!

Our thanks to the Boy Scout Troop 80 from Owasso who presented the colors and also helped serve ice cream to Residents, their families and friends. We appreciate the wonderful music of the Tulsa Community Band, which has been a tradition at this event.

Saint Simeon’s Auxiliary in Action

Great Time at the Ice Cream Social!

Kudos to Brenda Haesloop, Event Chair, and the Auxiliary volunteers for a memorable evening of music, food and fun at the annual Oktoberfest Party! Many thanks to the Morrison staff for preparing & serving a delicious variety of German fare - complete with “brats.”

Oktoberfest at Saint Simeon’s would not be complete without the music of the Carl & Shirlee Stoops, who entertained Residents in Valley View Dining, Health Care Center and the Memory Center. Everyone enjoyed singing and “chicken dancing.” The German American Society Singers also entertained in the Valley View Dining Room.

All Residents, family members and friends of Saint Simeon’s are welcome and encouraged to join the Auxiliary. In addition to the Ice Cream Social and Oktoberfest, the Auxiliary sponsors the Christmas Parties and the Spring Luncheon. Auxiliary volunteers enrich the lives of the Residents through the Resident Library, the Tree of Dreams program, the Landscape Enrichment Committee, the Friends of the Animals Committee, the Education Committee and much more! For more information about the Auxiliary contact Stephen Mason at [email protected] or 918.794.1937.
