The main objectives of theproject are:

To improve the socio economicstatus of poor families by providingthem high yielding /improved varietiesof fruit plants.

    1. The objective of the projects are toestablish model fruit orchards in thedistricts and these model orchardswill serve as progeny and will beused for further distribution ofimproved fruit plants amongst thefarming communities which will also

    replace the indigenous varieties.

    2. This project will also help inextending technology to the farmersfor laying out of fruit orchards itspromotion and will be implementedin their own field.

    3. The existing fruit plants are of lowyield varieties and their production isinadequate to meet the requirement

of the area, therefore through modelfruit orchards the farmers will beencouraged to grow high yieldingvarieties and will be able to get moreincome from the newly establishedvarieties.

At present the farmers are not aware ofthe orchard lay out. Through the projectactivities, practical training of farmers atFarm Services Centers; mass

awareness will be resultantly achievedfor PROMOTION OF FRUITS in the ProjectArea.

    6. Description, justification andtechnical parameters.

The project will be implemented in tenDistricts of NWFP. The main focus willbe on small farmers and activities will becarried out through Farm Servicescenters. The transfer of technology will

bring a change in fruit production andthe yield per unit will be increased.

    INTRODUCTION

The North West Frontier Province(NWFP) is situated 31 to 370 to 740 E. Itis bounded by the Hindukush Mountainsin The north and Afghanistan in theNorth West, with Baluchistan on itssouth-western border. Its northeast is

flanked by the Gilgit Agency and AzadKashmir, while Punjab province bordersits south eastern and southern frontier. The geographic area of NWFP is 10.17million ha which is 12.8% of Pakistanstotal geographic area.

The province has highly diversifiedlandscape and environment: lofty snow-clad mountains, valley plains, piedmontplains and loess plains where variations

in the soil forming factors are quietcommon. The altitude varies from lessthan 300 meters in the south (D.I.Khan)to over 6000 meters in the North(Chitral).

    LAND USE STATISTICS

The geographic area of NWFP is 8.342million ha, of which 1.876 million ha(22.50%) was cultivated in 2004-2005.

The cultivated area has decreasedsince 1990-91. The major constraint forany increase in cultivated area is lack ofwater as over 50% of the cultivated areais rainfed, and over one million ha ofcultivable area is culturable waste land. However, the total cropped area hasincreased due to increase in croppingintensity and increase multi-cropped.Although, the total cultivated area of theprovince is about 8% of the total

cultivated area of Pakistan, the provinceis the countrys largest producer of

    Justification.

Laying Out of Model Fruit Orchardsin the Proposed District for Project

Though some area of these districts isbrought under orchards by the farmingcommunity using indigenous varietiesyet it is essential to educate them for

usage of high yielding varieties as wellas proper layout of the orchards keepingin view the cropping intensity. Throughadoption of modern techniques andimproved varieties the farmingcommunity would be capable to fetchhighest economical yield of these fruitresultantly increased income bettersocio economic conditions and changein their life style. Majority of farmershaving small land holding though the

have little sources , but they are hardworking. They are very keen to adoptmodern Agriculture Technology.

    Participants

FSC members / small farmers will begiven priorities for laying out of modelfruit orchards of dates , these farmerscan participate in the trainings, may also

adopt this technology at their farm andorganization. The criteria of selectionwill be decided by a committee framedunder the Chairmanship of ExecutiveDistrict Officer Agriculture of therespective districts.

    Programme

The Programme will be carried out inthree years, the tender will be floated forthe provision of improved varieties offruit plants.

Through the help of this project
