As the British summer bids us fond farewell, we prepare to turn the clocks back and the countdown to the festive season begins, the ESU’s autumn-winter events calendar is well and truly underway. After a fantastic summer season that included a feast of Dartmouth House Lunches, musical and theatrical evenings and a spot of afternoon tea at the House of Lords, we are thrilled to be able to bring you yet another season of diverse and exciting events for our members, alumni and guests - the highlight of which will undoubtedly be our annual Christmas Carol Concert on 7 December. Once again, Dartmouth House will play host to Wells Cathedral School Choir as we enjoy an evening of yuletide cheer. Tickets are already selling for this event, so be sure to register now should you wish to be part of the festive fun! Our newly-designed application forms have received overwhelmingly positive feedback; use them to book on to your chosen events but please don’t forget a stamped-addressed envelope - every penny the ESU saves on postage goes directly to supporting our charitable activities. And remember, if you have an idea for a particular event, or would like to see the ESU feature any specific type of event(s), please don’t hesitate to contact me. All ideas are gratefully received! Wednesday 5 OctoberThe Lindemann Trust Fellowship Reunion and public lecture

On behalf of the Lindemann Trust Fellowship Committee, the ESU would like to invite all alumni of the Lindemann Trust Fellowship to a drinks and buffet reception from 7 - 8 pm.

We are also privileged to welcome Professor Robin Marshall as guest of honour, who will give a special lecture from 8 pm to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the nucleus. Members of the public are invited to attend this lecture.

Tickets: Buffet reception and lecture - free for Lindemann alumni (with a suggested donation of £25). Lecture only - £10 members, £11 non-Lindemann alumni, £12 non-members, to include one glass of wine or a soft drink.There will be a cash bar.

Tuesday 18 October, 6.30 – 8.30 pmMeet the AuthorAnne Sebba: That Woman: The life of Wallis Simpson

Anne Sebba is a biographer, lecturer, journalist and former Reuters foreign correspondent. Author of eight critically acclaimed books on iconic women, including Mother Teresa, Jennie Churchill and Laura Ashley, Anne will talk about her latest biography That Woman: The Life of Wallis Simpson, published in August and featured alongside a Channel 4 documentary.

Monday 24 October, 6.30 – 9 pm (registration from 6 pm)The College of Public Speaking Corporate Challenge Grand Final

The College of Public Speaking Corporate Challenge is an innovation to promote and encourage communication excellence across the public, private and voluntary sectors. In its bid to find the UK’s top corporate speakers, the grand final of the Corporate Challenge will be held at Dartmouth House, featuring special guest and chief judge Chris Bates, runner up in the 2010 series of The Apprentice.

Tickets to this event are free but please register your attendance no later than Friday 21 October.

Wednesday 2 November, 6.30 – 8.30 pm Meet the AuthorAlbert Jack: It’s a Wonderful Word Albert Jack is a writer and historian. His first book, the international best-seller Red Herrings and White Elephants, explored the origins of well-known phrases and was serialised by The Sunday Times for over a year. A veteran of hundreds of live television shows and thousands of radio appearances worldwide, his latest publication It’s a Wonderful Word collects over 500 of the strangest, funniest-sounding and most downright delightful words in the English language and traces them back to their often puzzling origins. Tickets: £10 members, £11 alumni, £12 non-members to include two glasses of wine or soft drinks. There will be a cash bar.

Thursday 27 October, 12.30 – 2.30 pmDartmouth House LunchSteven Brindle: English Heritage and the restoration of Windsor Castle

ESU alumnus Steven Brindle is an architectural historian for English Heritage and author of numerous publications including Blue Guide to the Country Houses of England and Paddington: Its History and Architecture. Join us for his Dartmouth House Lunch on the current conversation projects being both considered and undertaken by English Heritage as well as the inside story on the most ambitious and challenging project to date: the restoration of Windsor Castle.

Tickets: £40 members, £45 alumni, £50 non-members to include a two-course lunch with wine. There will be a cash bar.

Tuesday 15 November: 6.30 – 8 pmEvening LectureJames Miller: Fertile Fortune: The History of Tyntesfield With over 30 years experience as the former Head of British Paintings and Country House Sales departments at Sotheby’s, James Miller has an enviable knowledge of British houses and their collections. His lecture will focus on the acquisition of Tyntesfield, a Victorian Gothic Revival estate near Wraxall, North Somerset, by the National Trust from the guano magnate, William Gibbs. Tickets: £17.50 to include one glass of wine. There will be a cash bar.

This event is in support of the ESU Chilton Art History Scholarship.

Monday 21 November 7 - 9 pmThe Furness Feast

The third annual dinner is open to all SSE (formerly BASS) alumni who attended Harvard-Westlake School in California during their time abroad as well as American H-W alumni living in London.

This year we are also delighted to be welcoming Tom Hudnut, President of Harvard-Westlake.

Wednesday 23 November, 6.30 – 8.30 pmMeet the Artist: Paul Winner Paul is a former “Artist in Residence” at the 7th World Conference on Religion and Peace in Amman, Jordan. Seven of his watercolours of Petra were presented as “life-time achievement” awards to the 7 religious leaders who had made outstanding contributions toward the pursuit of world peace.

His latest exhibition, An exhibition of paintings and drawings of people, places and events; a record of a busy life and of 38 years’ membership at the Reform Club ran at the Reform Club from October-November 2010.

Thursday 24 November, 12.30 – 2.30 pm Dartmouth House LunchLady Catherine Meyer Lady Catherine Meyer is the founder and chief executive of the international children’s charity PACT (Parents and Abducted Children Together), author and wife of Sir Christopher Meyer, the former British Ambassador to the United States. After a ten year battle to regain custody of her two sons, abducted at the hands of her former husband, Catherine has become an active campaigner on behalf of missing and abducted children in the United Kingdom and abroad, a plight that has seen her give evidence at the US Senate, House of Representatives and instigate a number of adjournment debates in the House of Commons. Join the ESU for her truly inspirational Dartmouth House Lunch where Catherine will discuss how personal tragedy caused her to wage a campaign against international parental child abduction, her journey to reunite with her children after ten painful years of separation and how, amongst her battle, she arrived in Washington as the British First Lady. Tickets: £40 members, £45 alumni, £50 non-members, to include a two-course lunch with wine. There will be a cash bar.

Thursday 1 December, 6.30 - 8.30 pmMeet the AuthorDr Geoffrey Lee Williams: A Couple of Duffers Go To War

At the age of 9, Geoffrey Lee Williams and his twin brother Alan felt ready for the war but were not ready for its consequences. The book begins from the brothers’ first evacuation to Hartley in Kent and then goes on to record their impressions of their three subsequent evacuations and their adventures, or misadventures, during the Battle of Britain, the London Blitz, D Day and the V1 and V2 raids until the end of the War in 1945.

Dr Geoffrey Lee Williams is Academic Director of the Institute of Economic and Political Studies (INSTEP), and is a founding Director of The Transatlantic Institute for Study Abroad. Prof. Alan Lee Williams is a former Labour party politician and was Director-General of the ESU from 1979 - 1986.

Wednesday 7 December, 6.30 – 9 pmChristmas Carol Concert With seasonal music from the students of Wells Cathedral School choir, readings from ESU staff and members and Christmas Carols on the grand staircase, join us for a feast of yuletide cheer and festive frolics at Dartmouth House. The evening will begin at 6.30 pm with a reception, before the concert at 7 pm. Tickets: £25 members, £27 guests. There will be a cash bar.

Wednesday 14 December, 12.30 pm – 2.30 pmDartmouth House LunchRobert Noble: Piracy on the high seas As the United Nations estimates the annual cost of piracy in the Indian Ocean to be in the range of $5-$7 billion, Robert Noble, Average Adjuster for Mediterranean Average Adjusting Co (a specialist maritime insurance firm), will give an illustrated talk on the single greatest threat facing the maritime industry. Tickets: £40 members, £45 alumni, £50 non-members, to include a two-course lunch with wine. There will be a cash bar.

Tuesday 24 January, 6.30 – 8 pmMeet the AuthorRoger Rosewell: Medieval Wall Paintings in English and Welsh Churches Wall paintings are a unique art form, complementing and yet distinctly separate from other religious imagery in churches. Unlike carvings or stained glass windows, their support was the structure itself, with the artist’s `canvas’ the very stone and plaster of the church. Notwithstanding their dissimilarity from other religious art, wall paintings were also an integral part of church interiors, enhancing devotional imagery and inspiring faith and commitment in their own right, and providing an artistic setting for the church’s sacred rituals and public ceremonies.

Join the ESU for a fascinating talk by Roger Rosewell, former journalist, Director of a private European art foundation and the news editor of the online stained glass magazine, VIDIMUS, as he journeys through many of the best surviving examples of medieval church wall paintings today, bringing the imagery and iconography of the medieval church vividly to life. Tickets: £12 members, £13 alumni, £14 guests, to include a glass of wine and selection of nibbles. There will be a cash bar.

Wednesday 11 January, 6.30 – 8 pm Meet the AuthorHerta Von Stiegel: The Mountain Within In July 2008, international business executive Herta Von Stiegel led a group of disabled people to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity. The story was captured in the award-winning documentary The Mountain Within and now the expedition has inspired this remarkable work, which blends the gripping tale with powerful leadership lessons and conversations with many of the world’s most influential business leaders including, among others, Kay Unger, Sung-Joo Kim, Baroness Scotland of Asthal, Hon Al Gore and David Blood. Tickets: £12 members, £13 alumni, £14 guests, to include a glass of wine and a selection of nibbles.A cash bar will also be available.
