Resume Guide

Introduction The University Career Center (UCC) Resume Guide for Strayer students (in this guide, “students” also refers to alumni) is intended to be only a guide, and not an inflexible, “cookie-cutter” blueprint for creating a resume. For an effective job search, every student’s resume should be a “custom-fit”. The information in this guide along with available Strayer degree resume templates, provide the “building-blocks” that will allow a student to create their own personalized resume that will effectively present their background and skillset. While this guide focuses on the traditional one or two page “paper” resume, students are encouraged to explore and consider online complementary resources including video resumes, and career portfolios.

Resume Definition

1. A brief account of one's professional or work experience and qualifications, often submitted with an employment application. 2. A powerful, self-promotional marketing tool designed to motivate an employer to extend a job interview offer. related terms: advertisement, infomercial, sales pitch, promo package In order to attract an employer’s attention, your resume must be much more than a brief history of where you worked and where you went to school! Just like a television infomercial, you need a compelling “hook” to get the employer to continue reading your resume to learn why you have “the right stuff” to do the job you are replying to. Your resume must focus on how you can benefit the employer, not how the job will benefit you.

Resume Objective

Very simply, the objective of a resume is to convince an employer to offer an interview for a job opening.

Resume Files Before exploring the “building blocks” of an effective resume, there are a few important items that can make your resume more impressive and accessible when creating it with a word processing program.

File name

Save your resume with a file name that informs an employer! Ashley Ambrose – Resume – Accountant means much more than: “resume”, “resumev2”, “samsmith”.

File format

Instead of the default word processing program file format, you can make sure your resume will be able to be opened by saving it in a Rich Text Format, or as a PDF. Selecting File, Save As will offer Rich Text Format as an option with nearly all word processing programs. The option to save, or print as an Adobe PDF file may require an additional software program.

Number of Pages

The old rule of a resume limited to one page is just that, old! One or two pages –rarely more- is acceptable.

Resume Decision Tree Before beginning work on revising or creating a resume, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do I want a new job like my previous jobs, or a job in a new career field? 2. Is my strongest career asset, my work experience, or my skills and recent education?

Using two fictitious students as examples, here’s is how each would answer these questions. Student #1

Over five years of work experience with job titles related to bookkeeping and accounting.

Completing a BS in Accounting degree.

Wants a new job as an Accountant. Answer to Questions

1. I do want a job like my previous jobs. 2. I do have extensive experience in my career field so my work experience is a stronger asset than my

education. Student #2

Over ten years of work experience with various job titles in various career fields, all not related to accounting. Also several gaps in employment during the ten years.

Completing a BS in Accounting degree.

Wants a new job as an Accountant. Answer to Questions

1. I do not want a job like my previous jobs. I want a new job in a new career field. 2. I do not have extensive experience in my career field so my education is a stronger asset than my

work experience. Your answers to these questions will determine your resume focus. Keep them in your mind as you review the Resume Guide!

Resume Decision Tree 1. Do I want a new job like my previous jobs, or a job in a new career field? 2. Is my strongest career asset, my work experience, or my skills and recent education?

if… Yes. New Job Like Old Job

Work Experience is Strongest Career Asset then…

if… No. New Job NOT Like Old Job

Education is Strongest Career Asset then…

Resume Focus is Work Experience Resume Focus is Skills and Education

Resume Elements (Summary) Now let’s get down to the “building blocks” of a resume – resume elements. The table below summarizes the common resume elements that appear as sections in a resume. A “tag” name is used to quickly identify the purpose of each element.

Tag Resume Section Title Section Notes / Purpose

ID Your personal contact information.

Job 4 Me Identify the job title or career field you are seeking.

The Hook Professional Profile A “power statement” that “grabs” the reader.

Job Skills Key Skills (optional) 3-5 skills that match a job requirement.

School Education Relevant degrees, certifications, and training. No high school.

Work Professional Experience Can include volunteer and other non-paid experience

Skills Professional Summary “skill clusters” that identify your career strengths

About Me Affiliations / Interests (optional)

References [none - leave it off!] Leave off the resume and do not include “available upon request”! Use all available resume space to promote yourself!

Remember: the names of the resume element section titles can vary as well as the order (except for the “essentials”) that they appear in the resume! Remember: a resume does NOT have to be on one page! Two, but usually not more than two pages are acceptable.

The 4 Essential Elements

The following elements are used in the following order (top of resume, moving down) on all resumes.

1. ID – Contact Information

Your personal contact information always appears at the top of the resume.

2. Job 4 Me – a Job Title, or Career Field

Below your contact information, identify your career choice by listing either the job title you are replying to, or career field you are interested in.

3. The Hook – Your Professional Profile

Below your Job Title or Career Field, you need a “power statement” that grabs the attention of the reader! Rather than an “Objective” that tells the employer what you want, describe what you offer an employer.

4. Job Skills – Key Skills the job requires and that you have (optional)

Match your skills and experience with those identified in a job description – 3 to 5 bullet points.

The 4 Additional Elements

The resume focus determines both the order of presentation and the content of these additional elements.

School

Post high school education including relevant college degrees, certifications, and training programs.

Work

Professional experience, in detail or summary based on the resume focus. (can include volunteer and un-paid experience).

Skills

Skills and abilities arranged in skill “clusters”.

About Me

Personal affiliations, interests, and honors that complement your career direction. This resume element is optional and if used, is always at the very bottom of the resume.

Resume Essential Elements (Detail)

1. ID – Contact Information Your personal contact information appears at the top of the resume. The information should be current and clearly present to an employer how to contact you. Tips

1. Keep to two lines to maximize space for the resume elements below. 2. Use a “career-builder”, professional email account. 3. Do not enter your email as a hyperlink, just plain text to make it more easily read. 4. List just your primary phone contact number without a label: “cell”, “home”.

Before After

Ashley A. Ambrose 123 Virgina Rd Apt #123

Portland, OR 98765

Cell (123) 456-7890

Ashley A. Ambrose (123) 456-7890 • [email protected]

Before Challenges

1. Uses 5 lines, reducing the amount of space on the resume for remaining resume elements. 2. Misspelling: “Virgina” (not Virginia). NO misspelled words on resumes!!! 3. Not necessary to identify the phone number as a “Cell” number. 4. Non-professional email. Employers are not attracted to applicants with extremely “personal” emails. 5. The email is a hyperlink making the underscore difficult to read.

After Benefits

1. Uses 2 lines, increasing the amount of space on the resume for remaining resume elements. 2. Clear, easy-to-read information with no misspellings. 3. Professional, “career-enhancing” email.

2. Job 4 Me – a Job Title, or Career Field After viewing your contact information, the Job 4 Me resume element will immediately inform the reader of the job title you are replying to, or the career field that you are interested in.

Before Objective - My goal is to make positive impact in my community/society and also help others to

become a useful neighbors and co-workers to help ourselves and our society as well as the country

After Director of Provider Services Health Services Administration

(job title) (career field)

Before Challenges This career “Objective” is all about what the applicant wants. An employer does not want to know the goals and needs of an applicant. An employer wants to know how the applicant can solve business challenges. After Benefits The employer clearly recognizes that the resume is in response to a specific job title, Director of Provider Services, or for positions with the employer in the area of Health Services Administration.

3. The Hook – Your Professional Profile When an employer selects your resume to review (from the many received for a job opening), the “10 second” rule states that your resume must impress the reader within ten seconds (possibly up to thirty) in order for you to have a chance of being considered for an interview. After your contact information and desired “Job 4 Me”, it is essential that you hook the reader’s attention with a power statement that clearly informs the reader that you have the “right stuff” for the job.

Before

Objective - To obtain a position where I be an asset to the employer while exploring

possibility for advancement. Establish and maintain a healthy rapport with management and staff. Utilize all my skills and talents within the workplace to benefit the company and/or corporation as a whole.

After

Profile - Business executive with effective strategic planning skills desires the opportunity to

partner with company unit leaders to improve workforce productivity. Strengths include linking business objectives with organizational design systems to enhance financial returns and support corporate culture. Extensive experience includes, but is not limited to, benefit planning, P & L responsibility, performance management models, devising innovative compensation plans, and developing and delivering training programs.

(with relevant work experience)

Results-oriented, detailed professional with a record of superior performance, seeking to apply my recent education and experience in the field of retail management.

(with little or no relevant work experience)

Before Challenges Another career “Objective” that is too general, vague, and is again more about what the applicant wants, not how the applicant can benefit the employer

Page 8: ESUME GUIDE - Strayer University · Resume Guide Page | 1 version 2012Q1 Introduction The University Career Center (UCC) Resume Guide for Strayer students (in this guide, “students”

After Benefits The first “Profile” clearly presents skills and experience that would benefit an employer. The second statement informs the employer of the student’s desired career field, retail management and of the benefits the student can bring to the employer: recent education related to the career field, and an excellent work ethic. There are many options for The Hook resume element title: Professional Profile, Profile, Profile Summary, or no title at all – just the “power statement”.

4. Job Skills – Key Skills the job requires and that you have This optional resume element can be very effective if you have the skills, experience, and abilities listed within the job description of the job you are replying to. You are telling the employer: Look no further! You need this done? I can get it done!

Before providing details on the remaining resume elements -School, Work, Skills, and About Me- we need to review resume formats. The resume format and focus will determine how the remaining resume elements will be presented.

Resume Formats Most students are familiar with the traditional “chronological” resume: your contact information, an objective, and then your job titles with work experience details in descending chronological order. More students should be aware of alternatives to the chronological resume format: functional, and combination. But before considering a resume format, as previously presented you need to decide on your resume focus.

Resume Focus

Here again are the two resume focus decision questions:

1. Do I want a new job like my previous jobs, or a job in a new career field? 2. Is my strongest career asset, my work experience, or my skills and recent education?

When the answers are you want a new job like your previous jobs and work is a stronger asset than my education, a Work Focus resume would be the most effective. This is the traditional Chronological resume format. When the answers are you want a new job not like your previous jobs and education is a stronger asset than work experience, a Skills Focus resume would be most effective. This is a Functional resume format. You may find that you want to present some combination of your work, education, and skills. This is the Combination resume format. The following table summarizes the presentation order of additional resume elements dependent up on the resume format and focus.

Resume Format / Focus Chronological / Work Functional / Skills Work + Skills / Combination

Presentation order of Additional Resume Elements

5. Work 6. School 7. About Me

5. School 6. Skills 7. Work 8. About Me

5. Work 6. Skills 7. School 8. About Me

Samples of these three resume formats and focus appear at the end of this guide.

Resume Additional Elements (Detail) A general resume rule is that items, especially work experience and education should always be presented in reverse chronological order, most recent listed first and then going back in time.

School Do not list high school level diplomas

List only relevant education that supports your desired job title/ career field choice

List non-degree certifications, licenses, and training as a sub-section.

Include academic honors and superior GPA scores

Page 10: ESUME GUIDE - Strayer University · Resume Guide Page | 1 version 2012Q1 Introduction The University Career Center (UCC) Resume Guide for Strayer students (in this guide, “students”

Resume Guide

Page | 8 version 2012Q1

Resume Format / Focus is Chronological / Work Experience

1. Place education below work experience. 2. Listing relevant coursework is optional.

Resume Format / Focus is Functional / Skills and Education

1. Place education above skills, and work experience 2. Listing relevant degree coursework can serve as a substitute for work experience

Work Resume Format / Focus is Chronological / Work Experience

1. Work follows The Hook/Key Skills 2. List job titles / employer along with details of your role, responsibilities, and actions you took

that benefited the employer.

Resume Format / Focus is Functional / Skills and Education 1. Work follows a Skills Element section 2. List only job title, name of employer, location, and dates employed (from / to).

Skills Resume Format / Focus is Chronological / Work Experience

1. Usually not used. Could be used to highlight specific skills and would follow Work.

Resume Format / Focus is Functional / Skills and Education 1. Skills follows The Hook / Key Skills 2. Arrange skills and abilities in category “clusters”.

About Me This resume element is optional and if used is always is presented at the bottom of the resume. “About Me” can include: professional and personal affiliations; community involvement; and awards received.

Items should be relevant to your career goals.

Include items that show leadership and superior performance or achievement.

Avoid controversial or very personal items.

An Objective is about what you want. Replace with a “Job 4 Me” – job title, or career field, followed by a Professional Summary – what you can do for an Employer.

Does student want to continue to be a Customer Service Rep.? Better to focus on education and skills, not previous job titles in chronological order.

A “Key Skills” section is more effective identifying

experience and abilities that match those in a job ad.

Education (like work experience) is always in descending date order (most current first). Listing relevant coursework can be effective as a substitute for work experience. List relevant training and certification, but never high school diplomas.

Not needed! Leave off the resume. When an Employer asks for references, they can be supplied on a separate document.

Limit to 2 lines when space needed on resume. “Unprofessional” email. Remove hyperlink from email – difficult to read underline between
