 Duncan Weir Director of Golf Development, The R&A  

Duncan Weir is addressing this conference for the second time, the previous occasion being in 2000.  He joined The R&A’s staff in May 1985 following four years on a golf scholarship at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics (1984).  Duncan worked almost entirely on The Open Championship from 1985 to 2000 before taking on his current role as The R&A’s first Director of Golf Development.  He has played a great deal of amateur golf and won the Scottish 

Boys’ and Scottish Schoolboys’ Championships in 1979 and the Fife Stroke Play Championship in 1982 and 1985.  In 1989 he reached the semi‐finals of the Scottish Amateur Championship and has represented Scotland and Great Britain & Ireland and also played for his home county of Fife from 1977 to 2007.  Starting at Burntisland Golf House Club, Duncan won the club championship there in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and also won the club championship at Lundin Golf Club in 2001.  At different times he held the course records at both Burntisland and Lundin but no longer!  His lowest handicap was scratch and now plays off two.  Away from golf, Duncan is engaged to Kim and has two sons, Russell aged 19, and Callum, aged 13, and also enjoys football, travelling and keeping fit.  Portugal is one of his favourite places and he is very much looking forward to the week. 

Tony Bennett Director of Education, PGAs of Europe 

Tony is the Director of Education for the Professional Golfers Association’s of Europe, which has the responsibility of over 20,000 golf professionals in 38 member countries worldwide. Tony travels extensively in his role added to which he is an international golf development consultant for the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. He has worked with many leading golfing organisations and several government 

departments while developing innovative and far reaching projects around the World.  

Tony started his career as a playing professional, but during his mid twenties Tony’s business acumen became apparent when he developed an innovative on course retail outlet, which later was recognised as being one of the leading golf retail establishments in the UK. Tony became a lecturer at the PGA Training School, for business and commerce. Tony has had successful experience in developing coach education frameworks, retail centres, academy structures and learning pathways.  

Tony was granted the status of Master Professional in 2006 and has been credited for modernising and contributing to the game of golf in Portugal. He received recognition from the former President of the Republic Dr. Jorge Sampaio in the form of a presidential Order of Merit award. As a graduate from Birmingham University, (UK) with a Master in Philosophy in Sports Participation and Coaching, he brings a wealth of knowledge to development projects around the World.  

Paul Metzler Director of Marketing & Industry Relations, The PGA of America  

Paul Metzler is the Senior Director of Marketing and Industry Relations for The PGA of America’s national office in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  Mr. Metzler oversee The PGA of America’s marketing, licensing partner management and activation, research, and branding departments along with day to day relations with golf’s allied associations and the PGA World Alliance.   Over the course of his 19 year tenure, Mr. Metzler also served as Manager of The PGA’s Golf Properties department where he was responsible for asset management of PGA Golf Property ventures, 

management of feasibility consulting assignments involving market analysis, financial projections and development cost modeling, project due diligence, financial structuring, bid procurement, membership programming, and the development of access/use‐rights for the various customer segments.  Before joining The PGA in 1992, Mr. Metzler managed a consulting practice for the firms of Laventhol & Horwath and Arthur Anderson where he specialized in market feasibility, financial modelling, membership structuring and operational consulting for public/private golf facilities, hotels, resorts, marinas/yacht clubs and various planned residential communities. Mr. Metzler is a graduate of Michigan State University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree while majoring in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutions Management. 

Antony Scanlon Executive Director, International Golf Federation  

Antony Scanlon in November 2010 was appointed as the Executive Director of the International Golf Federation (IGF), based in Lausanne, Switzerland.   At the IGF, Scanlon is responsible for the promotion of golf as an Olympic Sport, the international development of golf and the representation of golf within the Olympic Movement. He will also ensure the successful delivery and organisation of the golf competition when it makes its return at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.    Prior to this, at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) he was the Head of Olympic Games Coordination, Services and 

Operations since January 2004. In this role, he was responsible for the coordination of all aspects of both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Scanlon was charged with monitoring each Organising Committees’ (OCOG) deliverables and globally supporting the OCOGs throughout each stage prior to the delivery of the Olympic Games.     Additionally, Scanlon was directly accountable for the seamless operations of more than 20 functional areas which are key elements to the successful delivery of Games Services and Games Operations within an OCOG. During Games time, he was in charge of the IOC’s Games Coordination Office (the central control centre) which coordinates and bridges the daily operations between the IOC and the OCOG.   Scanlon’s Olympic experience began at the Atlanta Olympic Games. This was then carried forward to Sydney, where he held a senior position within the Sydney 2000 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.   

Glenn Cundari President, PGA of Canada  

For Professional Golfers’ Association of Canada President, Glenn Cundari, life has been a true exploration that has netted him innumerable successes locally, nationally and around the globe. An early love of the game has led to an evolving career as a golf pro, former golf academy owner, teacher and trainer, volunteer, public and motivational speaker and more.    As golf’s Master Learning Facilitator for Canada, he is responsible for the training and development of each of the nine PGA of Canada’s PGA Learning Facilitators who facilitate the national Teaching and Coaching programme. As well, Glenn trains and educates hundreds of golf pros annually. Glenn has the unique perspective of being the only PGA of Canada’s member who both develops and delivers the instructor and coach programming.  

  Glenn is also one of the international members on the PGA World Alliance Education Committee, responsible for overseeing golf standards for professionals across the globe. His position on this committee has led him to educational workshops, presentations and events around the world.   Glenn has been involved in research projects in the area of motor learning and is the technical lead with the PGA of Canada and NIKE research and development team in Fort Worth, Texas, examining ball/club collision science as it relates to instruction and club fitting.   Glenn is the current President of the Professional Golfers’ Association of Canada, and, as the Lead Learning Facilitator for Canada, is also actively involved through the National Coaching Certification Programme for Golf in curriculum design, instructional delivery, and standards administration for golf pro development programs across Canada and around the world.

Jonathan Smith Chief Executive, Golf Environment Organisation  

Jonathan Smith is Chief Executive of the Golf Environment Organisation ‐ an international, stakeholder led non‐profit that is entirely dedicated to the promotion of sustainability in golf.  Originally a geography graduate from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, he has been actively at the forefront of sustainable golf initiatives since 1996 – contributing to international panels, advocating for social and environmental 

responsibility in golf, developing strategies and guidance and providing in the field advice to golf facilities, developments and events.  Having led a sustainable golf initiative for the Scottish Golf Union and government for 9 years, he went on to establish GEO in 2005, and since then has led the organisation to become known as one of the most visionary, dynamic and credible sustainability actors in golf, and across the global sport environment movement.    He has travelled extensively, and collaborated with a multitude of people and organisations across golf, government and the environmental movement around the world ‐ using that insight to create credible solutions that make sustainability practical, accessible and productive to people working in golf.  He is a full member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, living near the GEO HQ in North Berwick with his wife and young children. 

Jonathan Pendry Golf Course Director, Braemar Golf  

Jonathan joined Braemar Golf in 2004 becoming a vital member of the management team and shareholder. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Turfgrass Science with extensive experience gained at some of the finest golf facilities in the world in agronomy, technical services, construction and practical greenkeeping. He is responsible for overseeing agronomic consultation, the delivery of technical services including all aspects of golf course construction and grow‐in together with complete project responsibility in core markets. 

 His tenure as an agronomist began on the links of Blackpool North Shore, and then moved on to work at the former Ryder Cup venue, the DeVere Belfry. At the Belfry Jonathan was a member of the greenkeeping team where he co‐designed and implemented its environmental management programme. Jonathan moved on to another Ryder Cup venue, Gleneagles, spending three years greenkeeping and gaining valuable insight into the preparation of a golf course for major events as well as completing a post graduate qualification in management.  In 2008 he was a key player in the establishment of a joint venture with Nass Contracting WLL of Bahrain and the construction of the Montgomerie Course at Riffa Views. The joint venture was incorporated in 2008 with the formation of BraemarNass, offering full construction services to clients throughout the Gulf Region. Recently overseen the construction of the PGA National Russia, near Moscow.  He has worked with many of the most established architects in world golf including Ernie Els, Kyle Philips, David McLay‐Kidd, Gary Player, European Golf Design, Peter Harradine & Jeremy Pern to name a few! Has an excellent understanding of the specifics relating to golf course construction, grow‐in and operation, including vast experience of constructing and maintaining golf courses in the harsh warm season environments such as the Middle East and grass species such as Paspalum.  “Jonathan’s core responsibility is for all issues relating to the golf course and maintenance department, including construction, agronomy, management, condition and presentation. His role would be to manage the creation and delivery of the construction team and ensure that the maintenance team was properly setup, trained and managed to deliver a great playing experience.” 

Alain de Soultrait Executive Director, European Challenge Tour  

Born on July 24, 1951, in Biarritz, France, where he still lives, Alain de Soultrait has been the Director of the European Challenge Tour for the past 27 years. He achieved a Masters in Management at the Université Paris Dauphine, before starting out in a career in golf in 1981 as a Tournament Director for the Fédération Française de Golf.   From there, he moved to the Circuit Professionnel Français as a Director of Tour Operations, and then onto Promogolf Européen to become their Deputy Executive Director. De Soultrait served as a member of the PTC European Challenge Tour Sub‐Committee from 1988 to 1994, when he was appointed Director of the Challenge Tour.   

A member of Golf d’Arcangues, de Soultrait was formerly an eight‐handicapper but currently plays off 13. Aside from golf, he counts rugby, skiing and surfing amongst his interests. He has three children: Vaea, Hina and Adrien.   

Fredrik Lindgren Marketing Executive, European Tour  

Fredrik Lindgren is European Tour Marketing Executive and head of the European Tour Performance Institute.   Fredrik’s background is as a professional golfer on the European Tour and the European Challenge tour from 1990 until 2000. He has been working for the European Tour since 2001.   Fredrik graduated from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA, in May 1990 with a BSc degree in International Trade and Finance.   He is a member of PGA of Sweden. 

Richard Heath General Secretary, European Golf Association  

Richard  Heath  is  a  formally  qualified  Sports  Manager  with  a Master  of  Advanced  Studies  in  Sports  Administration  and Technology from the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology  (AISTS)  in  Switzerland.  He  has  also  attained  a Bachelor  of  Science  with  Honours  and  a  Bachelor  of  Applied Science  and  is  a  former  university  medallist  and  scholarship holder. For the last six years he has been an AISTS invited lecturer in  Sports Management  at  the  École  Polytechnique  Fédérale  de Lausanne (EPFL).    His work  experience  encompasses many  aspects  of  the  golfing environment,  from  range‐boy  at  12  years,  to  greens  staff,  pro‐shop staff and operations manager.  

   In  2005,  Richard worked  on  a  European  combined  golf  and  tertiary  education  study  for  the European Golf Association (EGA). He then moved into the new EGA Championship Manager role and was responsible for the efficient running of all EGA Championships, the European Amateur Golf  Rankings  and  the  selection  and  management  of  European  and  Continental  European representative  teams. He also  sits on  the R&A/USGA Committee  for  the World Amateur Golf Ranking.  Richard  has  recently  accepted  the  role  of  EGA  General  Secretary  and  is  looking  forward  to renewing the organisation’s strategic pathway.  Richard,  40,  is  an  accomplished  amateur  golfer  with  over  15  years  of  representative  golf experience and a myriad of amateur tournament wins. He is currently plays at the Lausanne Golf Club in Switzerland, where he holds a +2 handicap.  

Jonathan Mannie Chairman, PGAs of Europe Education Committee  

Jonathan was born in Johannesburg South Africa on the 2 January 1963 and after completing his schooling and Military service he moved into the world of golf to follow his dreams of one day becoming a professional golfer. He has met many positive and influential people throughout the game of golf and has always enjoyed being around people who are both positive and motivated.  His dream of playing did not really materialize and at this point he decided to move into teaching and coaching. The new direction was filled with numerous challenges and he 

soon discovered there was a lot to learn. It was at this time that he became involved in Education which eventually led him to being where he is today.  Jonathan has had 18 years at a club near Salzburg and combined his work there with part time regional work for the Austrian Federation. In 2006 he took the decision to finally to move fulltime into Coaching and worked as National Coach for the ÖGV until November last year when he made the change to Switzerland to take over as Ladies and Girls National Coach.  With his change of direction this allowed him the time to take over as Chairman of the PGAs of Europe Education Committee and become a member of the PGAs of Europe Board. He finds both these positions to be very rewarding especially when he is working with influential people and friends and is honoured to be speaking during the Congress.  Jonathan is very proud of what has been achieved within Education over the years and is looking forward to future progress. 

Stefan Quirmbach President, PGA of Germany  

Born 1960 Married, 2 Daughters Lives in Göttingen  Started his career as a Golf professional in 1984 under the guidance of Henning Strüver in Frankfurter Golf Club

Michael Bannon Coach to Rory McIlroy 

Michael began his career in the PGA at Ardglass Golf Club in 1980 and spent three years there as assistant to Hugh Duggan. In 1983 he moved on to Holywood Golf Club to be the assistant to Sam Bacon and one year later succeeded him as the head professional. Michael spent 15 years at Holywood before moving on to his current role at Bangor golf club in 1999. 

Michael is one of the UK’s top teaching professionals and coach to European Tour star Rory McIlroy from 8 years of age. Michael has taught many successful elite amateurs and many of the region’s top professionals and in the past worked for 10 years with the GUI Ulster branch. Golf is a passion for Michael and he takes as much satisfaction from teaching beginners as he does teaching top players rooting his beliefs in sound basics and simplicity of the swing. 

As a player himself Michael has won over 20 events on the Irish Region Tour and numerous top ten finishes. In 1997 at Powerscourt in the Irish Professional Championships Michael was beaten in a playoff by Padraig Harrington. 

Today Michael focuses on teaching golfers of all abilities and expectations and helping them to move their game onto another level and get more enjoyment out of their golf.

Christophe Muniesa Executive Director, French Golf Federation  

Executive Director of the French Golf Federation, since 2005  Christophe has been Director of the French PGA from 1997 to 1999  He has been involved in different French companies in charge of the organization of sporting events and sportsmen management (Golf First, White Ball…)  Former Challenge Tour player (1992 – 1996)  

Former Member of the French National Team (1988 – 1991)

President of the Rhone‐Alpes County for the French Golf Federation  Member of the Board of the French Golf Federation Member of the Ryder Cup 2018 French Committee  Jean‐Lou had a successful carrier in the agribusiness during the last 20 years (international company selling products in Europe, Middle‐East and Africa)  He is a good player with a handicap of 15!   

George O’Grady Chief Executive, European Tour  

George O’Grady CBE became the third Executive Director of The European Tour on January 1, 2005, succeeding John Jacobs OBE, who supervised the Tour’s formative years from 1971 to 1974 and Ken Schofield CBE, who took over the reins on January 1, 1975.  Born of Irish parents on April 14, 1949 at RAF Singapore, where his father was a serving officer in the Royal Air Force, O’Grady was introduced to golf at the age of ten and played his first round as a Junior Member of the world‐renowned Royal Portrush course.  Educated at King’s School at Bruton in Somerset, he attended Reading University in Berkshire, attaining a BA Degree in Economics and Sociology. On leaving University, O’Grady joined Esso Petroleum as a Management Trainee and Marketing Manager. He subsequently moved 

to Hoare and Co Govett, Stockbrokers, as an Investment Analyst in the City of London.  He joined The European Tour in 1974 from the City as a Tournament Administrator and subsequently Tournament Director. He was Chief Referee at The Ryder Cup at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 1977 and Staging Director for The Ryder Cup in 1981, 1985 and 1989.  In 1984 O’Grady launched the development of the Tour’s commercial arm with the formation of European Tour Enterprises, of which he was appointed Managing Director.  In 1986, he was responsible for founding the Tour’s Benevolent Trust which distributes funds for worthy causes.  Together with Ken Schofield, O’Grady launched the European Seniors Tour with the first staging of the Senior British Open, and developed the Tour’s non‐network television policy in 1987 in a joint venture with Trans World International (TWI). This policy became formalised with the creation in 1991 of European Tour Productions, the Tour’s television arm, with O’Grady becoming Joint Managing Director.  O’Grady’s remit was to assist in developing the overall strategy of the Tour, maximise television policies and supervise tournament ownership and sponsorship programmes, which he did until taking up his role as Executive Director, following Schofield’s decision in 2003 to step aside at the end of 2004. His title changed to Chief Executive on January 1, 2007, to reflect his continued concentration on the business development of The European Tour.  Married to Barbara in 1976, the couple have two children, Nicholas (30) and Anna (24). The O’Gradys lives in Sunningdale, Berkshire, close to The European Tour’s Wentworth headquarters. His golf handicap is now 15 (formerly six) and he is a Member of Sunningdale, Royal Lytham and St Annes, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and has Honorary Membership of Wentworth Club.
