Emmanuel Promotes Service Learning by Susan G ifford- Student Life

Excerpt from the MaS${jchusett~ Campus Compact Nervs/tller

During the Campus CDmp~ct

Institute in January, th" Emmanuel College team addressed several questions while developing a vision statement and action plan. How do we talk about service learning in II. way that provides faculty members with techniques to facilitate student learning? Where do the out-of-c1ass commWlity service efforts of our students lit into the institutional gool of promoting students' moral and civic development?

AddresSing social justice issues and women's concerns has always been part of the mission of the College and its lounders, the Sisters uf Notre Dame. Is service learning a way to

further institutionalize this part of the Emmanuel College m ission, and carry out qur responsibility to the commWlity?

Thanks to the organizers of the institute, each team was assignro a coach. Prepared with substantial research on the culture of campus life at Emmanuel, our coach challenged us to develop a specific action plan and ask for the needed support from the College. Key 10 the development of our action plan were the missions of Emmanuel College and the Sisters of Notre Dame. Our pl.m focuses on using alrc~dy existing relationships with local sites such as the Sisters of Notre Dame Education Center which provides ESL and adult educati,m classes and Project Hope, a ~helter for

women. We also plan to further develop Tel~tionships with the surrounding cornmW1ities of the Fenway ilfid Mission Hill.

Work has already begun on providing faculty development opportunities for those interested in incorporating seTviC(' into their courses. We hope to open a Center for Community Action in the future. !he Service Lea rning Committee will continue to promote service in the curriculum at Emmanuel College, assisted greatly by the direction provided al the Institu te on Integrating Service into the Academic Curriculum.
