What is terrorism ?The use of violence and intimidation in to pursuit of political aims.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• ETA grew out of the Basque Nationalist Party founded in 1894

• managed to survive, though illegally, under the fascist regime of Francisco Franco and maintaining its headquarters in exile in Paris and keeping quietly out of sight in Spain.

• In 1959 some youthful members (angry), broke away and founded ETA.

• During the next few years the new organization developed groups and set revolutionary socialism as their goal.

• In 1966, at ETA’s fifth conference, the organization divided into two wings the “nationalists,” or ETA-V.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• Location: its between Spain and France

• The size of the group is unknown however there is an estimate of hundred member and supporters

• So far the future of the group is very huge because the ETA has supporters like the Islamic network

ETA GOALS/ TARGETS

• Mostly government officials

• killed over 800 people and carried out over 1,600 terrorist attacks

• civilians, though the group usually phones in warning of their attacks before the attacks occur.

• ETA has consistently targeted Spain's tourist attractions, most recently by bombing buses along Spain's tourist packed Costa del Sol.

• Attacks by ETA cost the Spanish government nearly $11 billion from 1994 to 2003.

COUNTRY INFORMATION

• The region extends inland some 150 kilometers, through the juncture of the Pyrenees and the Cordillera Cantabrica, and thence south to the Rio Ebro. • The region covers nearly 21,000 square kilometers, of which about 3,000 lie on the French side of the international frontier. • The 18,000 square kilometers on the Spanish side constitute about 3.6 percent of Spain's total land area

TERRORIST ACTIVITIES

• ETA relied on robberies for financial income, they also commit kidnappings and collect revolutionary taxes.

• ETA was also blamed for  bombs planted on commuter trains in the Spanish capital killed two-hundred people and injured hundreds of others. 

• Most of the attacks by the ETA were preceded by a warning call, allowing people to evacuate before the explosion. 

• Most attacks were carried out in Spain and France

WORLD RESPONSE

• Local and global governments did not approve of such random acts of violence on civilians, so they worked towards an ETA cease fire which would stop the violence and random killings.

FUTURE OF THE GROUP

• Through the similar style in attacks ETA and other terrorist groups, ETA is gaining more support from Islamic networks which could bring them more and new resources
