Criterion-referenced vs norm-referenced assessment

Natalie le Roux

Assessments can be viewed as criterion-referenced when they measure a student’s performance based on mastery of specific sets of skills, such as mathematical skills (Rust, Price & O' Donovan, 2003). This kind of assessment assesses what a student knows or understands and what a student does not know at the time the assessment has been taken. Examples of these kinds of tests include taking a driver’s test, where the learner driver passes if he/she has mastered the required driving skills. The National Benchmark Tests are another example of a criterion-referenced assessment as it con-veys information on whether the student is ready for academic study. It also gives information about what kind of aca-demic support the student may need once they are accepted and placed in university programs. There are many benefits to using criterion- referenced assessments since the focus of the assessments are on the individ-ual. When developing criterion-reference assessments, a set of criteria or descriptors are designed against which the stu-dent’s performance is assessed, identifying what a student should know or not know on a range of levels. Norm-referenced assessments on the other hand, measure a student’s performance in relation to the performance of the other students on the same assessment. In these kinds of assessments, the normal curve is used. It indicates where the scores of students are located on the normal curve. The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations is an example of a norm-referenced assessment in that it ranks an examinee in relation to other examinees in terms of the skills being as-sessed, such as mathematical literacy skills. http://ii.library.jhu.edu/tag/criterion-referenced-grading/

Our 3 research leads, Sanet Steyn, Natalie le Roux and Pragashni Pa-

dayachee recently held collaborative teaching and learning workshops

with staff at Walter Sisulu University. They hosted two 2-day workshops

in East London and a 1-day workshop at WSU's Butterworth campus.

The workshops were grouped by Faculty with the first being held on

Monday 24 & Tuesday 25 July for the fFaculties of Engineering and Nat-

ural Sciences. In attendance were the deans, heads of departments, lec-

turing staff from the various departments, staff from Institutional Re-

search and Planning (IRP) and staff from their Centre for Learning and

Teaching Development (CLTD).

On the first day our research leads and staff from CLTD and IRP gave

presentations on their various portfolios and to provide context to the

workshop. The second day involved brainstorming and discussing how

staff can use the NBT results, the type of

student cohort at WSU and the use of

technology to develop curricula or inter-

ventions to support students academically.

A similar workshop was held for the Accounting and Business group on Thursday 27 &

Friday 28 July.

The workshops were very well received by WSU staff.

Naomi Msusa attended the Second International Legitimation Code Theory Conference

that took place in Sydney, Australia, from 3 to 7 July. Dubbed LCTC2, the conference

brought together over 80 participants from the UK, Australia itself and five institutions

from South Africa, among others.

Legitimation Code Theory is a relatively new approach of analysing socio-cultural prac-

tices, whether in education or beyond, along a number of dimensions. Naomi's presen-

tation focused on how Semantic Gravity, a dimension of LCT, can be used to analyse

writer performance on the NBT Academic Literacy test.

Conferences and workshops

LCT.
