Education Outreach Programs

2011-2012 Season

Our Education Outreach mission is three-fold:1. To introduce students to high-quality, professional theatre

through our in-house school matinees and our extraordinary Fairy Godmother Program. The students who benefit from these programs don’t see a stripped-down, or “light” version of our shows, they get the exact same performance and production quality as our subscribers and patrons.

2. To guide students in finding their own creative voice through our Prelude Program, an in-school residency that allows students and their teachers to create their own original play.

3. To advocate for arts education by being an example of the power of using arts integration and experience in theatre to promote literacy, character development, and critical thinking skills. Our workshops and classes are specially designed to build performance and 21st Century Skills that are utilized not only in theatre, but in real-life applications as well.

Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati was created as a place for local theatre professionals to work and so it follows that we are dedicated to being a vibrant and supportive part of our community – and we have been for over 25 years. Our educational programs are designed to actively seek out and support teachers and students in Greater Cincinnati’s schools and community centers.

The vast majority of our outreach is completely underwritten, thanks to the generosity of our education outreach donors like the Charles H. Dater Foundation, and while the schools, incomes, and abilities of the kids may all vary, their desire to have an outlet to express themselves is always the same.

• Come see a show! ETC brings nearly 30,000 patrons to OTR/Gateway Quarter each year and serves as an economic engine for our neighborhood. Don’t forget to

visit the wonderful shops and restaurants that help make our neighborhood flourish!

• Make a donation to ETC anytime by visiting us at www.cincyetc.com for donation options. Even with sold out houses, ticket sales only make up ~34% of ETC’s

annual budget. We rely on our generous donors and sponsors for the rest.

• Donate healthy snacks and juice boxes for our Fairy Godmother Program.

• Join our volunteer organization - the ETC Entourage - to

assist with ushering, our annual winter coat drive, fundraisers, and more!

Mirror, mirror on the wall, from apple to queen, Ensemble Theatre's Snow White has is it all! From the creators of last year's smash hit Cinderella, comes an all-new world premiere musical Snow White, based on the classic fairytale, that reminds us the true reflection of beauty and happiness can only be found within. The eighth collaboration between ETC perennial favorites David Kisor and Joseph McDonough, this enchanted and memorable musical will delight audiences of all ages this holiday season.

The Fairy Godmother ProgramBenefitting economically disadvantaged children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to see ETC productions, the Fairy Godmother Program brings approximately 1,500 school children from Over-the-Rhine and other underserved areas to see our holiday musicals and other productions at no charge.

ETC’s Fairy Godmother Program was founded in the memory and celebration of Ginny Hoffman, a member of ETC who played the Fairy Godmother role in the first ETC holiday production.

Prelude

The Prelude Program is an in-depth study of creativity and the skill and effort it takes artists to see their visions come to life. It is a ten week residency in which students work with our Education Outreach Associate to write, design, rehearse, and perform their own play. Yet, the purpose isn’t to create a slick professional production. It takes innovation, creativity, and problem solving skills to complete the Prelude mission, and the aim is to help students along the path from concept to product and production.

Because the plays are written with the class, each student has a speaking part. Likewise, students design props, costumes and scenery for their play and are able to see how their ideas and drawings are translated to the stage.

Teachers who have participated in this program say they see an increase in their students’ self-esteem, problem-solving, presentation, reading, and writing skills as well as a renewed sense of pride in their work. This program also offers a unique way to discuss issues such as friendship, cheating, or bullying.

Prelude

In this 10 week residency program, students will:

• Create an original story featuring themes determined by the class

• Create and design distinctive characters and settings

• Learn presentation and performance skills through theatre games, rehearsals, and a final performance

• Address state and national standards in reading, writing, and the arts

• Study the power of storytelling and theatre to educate and explore

• Create a final performance to share with family and friends

Workshops

For groups that want the Prelude experience but cannot commit to a 10-week residency, our new Play in a Day workshop is a fantastic

option! Fully collaborative and creative, this workshop offers groups a chance to create, design, build, and perform their own play in just three hours!

So how is it different from Prelude?

• Everything happens in three hours!• Condensed timing means expanded innovation - kids are

forced to get super creative!

• While every student will get the chance to participate, not every student will get the chance to perform

While anyone may request a Play in a Day, the condensed time frame doesn’t allow for the same experience in arts and curriculum

integration that the Prelude Program offers. For this

reason, we highly recommend that classroom teachers consider

participating in Prelude.

Theatre in Real Life

1st - 8th Through exciting and engaging theatre games, students explore all the ways we communicate and

how acting skills can help one in everyday life.

It isn’t WHAT You Say, it’s HOW

You Say It!

2nd - 9th How often have you heard (or said!) this: “Don’t take that tone of voice with me!” Students explore the power of their voices and how to use that power

wisely! Serious discussions about bullying, emotional expression, and self-awareness combine with games

and humor to make this a fun and effective experience.

Stage Fright 3rd – 8th Learn some of the skills the pros use to help them cope with stage fright – and how those skills can help

students in real life! Students learn about historical figures, courage and themselves.

The Science of Theatre

2nd-9th How hard science comes out to play at the theatre! Discussions on the states of matter, sound, and more scientific concepts help make this interactive and fun workshop a favorite with teachers and students alike!

Actors and Directors

3rd-8th What does it take to be a good director? More than an acting class, this workshop challenges students to

work in small groups to direct and perform scenes from classic fairytales. A fun and effective way to build teamwork and leadership skills, this challenging

experience often has humorous and surprising results!
