By 2030 eThekwini will be Africa’s most caring and liveable city

For 2015/16 eThekwini received an Unqualified Audit Opinion.The city boasts a strong financial position as evidenced by:

• Collection rate of 101%• No external long term funding was taken during current year • Cash on hand at year end R7.21 billion• The rating agency has upgraded the eThekwini’s national scale long

term rating to AA from AA- while the short term rating has been maintained at A1+

SERVICE PROGRESS MADE 

Housing 1 936 new houses constructed, 144 new family units were constructed,253 units sold the Extended Discount Benefit Scheme, more than 6 500 hectares of land was acquired for housing purposes through private sales.

Cleansing & Solid Waste

DSW scooped the Greenest Municipality Award, the coverage for both formal and informal houses is 100%.

Water Coverage improved from 92.86% to 93.2% despite the impact of urban migration.

Sanitation Coverage decreased from 83.17% to 83.13% due to migration.

Electricity 11 424 pre-paid meters and 1 017 conventional meters were installed.

Roads Gravel to Surface Roads (high volume) : 21.02km, Sidewalks: 23.37 km, Roads Rehabilitated (preventative maintenance) : 200 lane km, New Roads: 4.5 lane km

• The water loss in distribution for the year averaged 40.66% and this is a serious concern as there has been a deterioration from the previous year which showed a loss of 36.2%.

• Projects were affected by stoppages due to socio-political challenges and violent protests in some areas

• Insufficient funding to meet the housing demand• The key revenue challenges going forward include the flat growth in

the rates base, and the current economic climate

• eThekwini Municipality received an Unqualified audit opinion for 2015/2016 financial year

• AA Credit rating which is the highest given to a municipality• DSW scooped the Greenest Municipality Award • EThekwini was awarded the Govan Mbeki award for Best Metro

during 2015/2016 for delivery during the 2014/2015 year• The Roads Provision Department continues to be recognised at

high level industry forums as the leading road authority in South Africa (along with SANRAL)

• The Architecture Department is recognised by industry leaders as a leading public sector interdisciplinary department in the build environment with over 40 built environment professionals
