Employers

Employers are prescreening by using information they gather from social media sites like Facebook to determine if that person is going to be a good fit for the company. The issue is the invasion of privacy of others, and sometimes leading to discrimination based on one’s profile. Employers or managers are also asking current employees for their password so they can check on their current status. They are looking for reasons to fire, punish existing employees and not hire.

What can we do!

This can be avoided by additional legislature regarding the division of rights and responsibilities between both parties of an employment contract and/or agreement. There should be a limitation on how aggressive the employer can get in the use of this media to screen employment, and also how deeply an employer may travel to discredit their staff. This also can be controlled technically through the social media sites. Technology is always changing the way we live our lives, so the laws that protect us should also change with it.
