The Holocaust

• This lesson will be presented to a ninth grade class that will be required to read Anne Frank.

Objectives

• To have students read Anne Frank and discuss the horrors she went through because of intolerance.

• Students will visit a multicultural center and write a reflection of their experience.

Students will be required to keep a journal. Three times a week they will write about their reading and try to make a connection to real-life.

Examples of Journal Topics

• Explain a time when you have felt discriminated against.

• Explain how reading Anne Frank makes you feel.

• What would you have done if you were Anne Frank?

• What are some examples of intolerance in current news?

• What are some ways that we can prevent intolerance?

Activities

• Students will be given days in the computer lab to visit appropriate internet sites. In groups, they will pick a topic to research and present to the class.

Topics to Research

Students will choose to do their research from one of several different viewpoint.

Viewpoint:

*Victims, bystanders, resisters, rescuers, liberators, survivors, and children.

Activities

• Students will be required once a week to bring in topics in current news that deals with ethnic intolerance. The students will then have a discussion over topics.
