CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR- CIMFR), Dhanbad is a pioneer R&D institute in the fields of mining and fuel technologies and a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India, New Delhi. The Institute was formed in April 2007 after integrating the core competencies of erstwhile Central Fuel Research Institute (CFRI) established in 1946 and Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI) established in 1956, the two national laboratories of CSIR. After consolidation, the widened bandwidth of the institute covers R&D support to the entire coal chain starting from mining to utilization. The focused R&D areas are resource quality assessment of coal, gassiness study of coal seams, coalbed methane (CBM)/coal mine methane (CMM)/shale gas, underground coal gasification (UCG), mine fire evaluation and control, disaster management in mines, ventilation planning and design, design of mining structures including supports, rock mechanics and ground control, mass production technology, blasting, thick and complex seam mining, mine subsidence, hard roof management, slope stability, stowing, EIA/EMP, coal combustion, beneficiation, carbonization, liquefaction, fly-ash utilization, coastal placer mining, and the state-of-art computational facilities. The institute is also actively involved in metal mining, design of hydro-electric projects, underground space technology, socio-economic development of people residing in mining areas, etc.

Coal acts as a source and reservoir of significant amount of methane along with minor amount of other gases, collectively known as coalbed methane. This methane can cause potential hazard during underground mining and when escaped to the atmosphere adds to the greenhouse gas effect. Methane has about twenty-one times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide. It is imperative, therefore, either to capture this methane before mining or drainage during underground mining, and can be utilized as a clean source of energy.

CSIR-CIMFR being the leading R&D organization in mining and fuel sector in the country is playing a pivotal role in exploration and exploitation of this non-conventional gas resources viz., CBM, CMM, shale gas and UCG. An excellent facility has been evolved to cater the R&D needs of the CBM/CMM Industry. India is now moving towards a phase of commercial development of CBM projects. Hence, the training course is intended to intensify the activities for commercial scale CBM projects through knowledge sharing and update amongst professionals both from Industry and academia.

The training programme aims at imparting thorough understanding of climate change consequences of coal extraction and utilization, energy mix, geology of CBM reservoirs, reservoir characterization, reservoir simulation, data collations and interpretation and, designing and execution of commercial CBM projects while addressing the environmental impacts of CBM projects. Distinguished domain experts from academia, R&D institutions and Industry will provide a holistic approach on CBM exploration and production strategies to foster the research and commercialization of CBM in India. Participants will have exposure to latest instrumental techniques specific to CBM for reservoir characterization through hands on modern microscopic
