The ROUTE feature isfound on the MENU

You can use existingwaypoints to build theroute.

    Route and Route Page

The eTrex allows you to navigate using one of threemethods:

    GOTO Route TracBack

The GOTO method of navigation was brieflydiscussed on page 16.

The Route feature and the GOTO feature arecomparable in that they both guide you to destinationwaypoints. However, the route feature is more power-ful because it is more automatic. When you reach onewaypoint, the eTrex automatically guides you to the nextwaypoint on the route without needing to touch any but-

tons. When you use the GOTO feature you have to stopand select the next waypoint before you start moving. When you plan a trip, you can select waypoints from awaypoint list and put them into the eTrexs memory. Atleast Two waypoints (up to a maximum of 50) are linkedtogether to form a route.

In the eTrex, a route is at least two waypoints thatdescribe the path you are going to travel. The Routefeature is very convenient because it allows the eTrex toguide you from the first waypoint in the route, to eachsuccessive waypoint until you reach your final destina-tion.

When you start your trip, you activate the routefeature and the eTrex points the way you should travel toget from the first waypoint to the second. You can thenuse the Navigation page to give you steering guidance.

TracBack, is discussed on page 28.

    2. Plan a ROUTE in MapSourceon a PC, and useSave To Device to download the ROUTE to theeTrex. See your Garmin dealer for more informationon using MapSource (MapSource is an optionalaccessory, and is not included with the eTrex).

In either case, you can navigate to a destination usingROUTE if a route has more than two waypoints. A singlewaypoint route is only a normal waypoint, not a route. The eTrex will not allow the FOLLOW button to behighlighted if there is only one waypoint in the route. When you select the FOLLOW button, a list with two

items is displayed letting you choose where to go. The listwill always show the FIRST (BEGINNING) and the LAST(END) waypoint in the route. The eTrex will guide you tothe selected final destination following each waypoint inthe route (the eTrex has one route).

    What is a Track Log?

The eTrex draws an electronic breadcrumb trail ortrack log on the Map Page as you travel. The track logstarts recording as soon as the eTrex gets a location fix. Ifyou want to keep a record of a certain track log before thetrack memory is filled and it begins to overwrite the earli-est tracks, you can save it to the Saved Tracks list. Youcan save a total of ten tracks in the eTrex. Saved trackscan be used for navigation later. After a track log is saved,

the saved track will have a beginning (BEGIN) and ending(END) point. This simply shows the when/where of thestarting and ending points of the saved track.

When you are ready to return to where you started, the eTrex will take you back by following the track logthat you left behind. TracBack allows you to return alonga traveled path without marking any waypoints. If youwant to keep a record of a certain track log or use theTracBack feature, it is recommended that you clear thetrack log before you start traveling. The percentage ofmemory used by the current track log is displayed atthe top of the page. After the track log is CLEARED, itwill show zero percent. When the display shows 99%,the most recent track points will start overwriting the

least recent track points. Thus, in order to avoid losingany track points, you should save the track log before itreaches 99% of memory usage.

    North Reference

Reference refers to the orientation of a maps grid.Map makers try to align the vertical lines on a map withTrue North. True North is the direction from anylocation on the earths surface to the north pole. Mapsare typically referenced to true north. Because a compasspoints to magnetic north, not true north, maps indicatethe difference between true and magnetic north withsomething called declination. The amount of declination

changes as you move around the earth. Magnetic Northis the direction in which a compass needle points. TheeTrex bearings will correspond to a compass if the eTrexis set to magnetic north. Due to errors introduced whenmap makers flatten the earths sphere onto paper, not allof the grid lines drawn on the map point exactly to thenorth pole, so the north indicated by the grid lines is

calledGrid North. But, the difference is usually smallenough that Grid north can be considered the same asTrue North for travelling on land. If necessary, you cancorrect for the difference between Grid North and TrueNorth manually.

GPS - the Global Positioning System- is anavigation revolution. Its a technology that pinpoints a

users location anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, regardless of the weather.

Designed by the United States Department of Defensefor use by the military, the GPS System was madeavailable to civilians for use in aviation, marine surveyingand general outdoor/recreation markets. Today, millions

of people utilize the accuracy and convenience of thisamazing technology to hunt, fish, hike, fly, cruise and sail.GPS consists of a constellation of 24 satellites orbitingsome 12,000 miles above the earth.

These satellites transmit signals containing time andorbital data to calculate satellite position and almanac

data. Meanwhile, receivers used on the ground, sea andair search the sky for the satellites. The GPS unit needsto acquire good signals from at least three satellites todetermine a position on the surface of the earth. A fourthsignal is required to get three-dimensional positioningwhich determines elevation or altitude.

A simple way to determine your local time offset is how many hours you are behindor ahead of UTC (also called Greenwich or zulu time) Example: EST (Eastern StandardTime) is 5 hours behind UTC, so your offset would be -5. Adding one hour for daylightsavings would make EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) -4. Subtract an hour for each timezone as you travel west.

    Offsets for Continental U.S. would be: EST: -5 EDT: -4 CST: -6 CDT: -5 MST: -7 MDT: -6 PST: -8 PDT: -7

Interface formats are selected from the SETUP Page. The input/output lines on your eTrex are RS-232 compat-

ible, allowing easy interface to a wide range of externaldevices, including PCs, differential beacon receivers, marine autopilots and/or a second GPS receiver.

The NMEA 0183 version 2.0 interface format issupported by the eTrex and enables the unit to drive upto three NMEA devices.

NMEA 0183 Version 3.0 Approved Sentences:GPGGA, GPGLL, GPGSA, GPGSV, GPRMB, GPRMC,GPRTE, GPVTG, GPWPL, GPBOD

    Garmin Proprietary Sentences:

PGRME (estimated error), PGRMM (datum string),PGRMZ (altitude), PSLIB (beacon receiver control)

DGPS (Differential GPS) corrections are acceptedin RTCM SC-104 version 2.0 format through the DataIn line. The Garmin GBR 21 and GBR 23 is the recom-mended beacon receiver for use with the eTrex. Otherbeacon receivers with the correct RTCM format may beused, but may not correctly display status or allow tuningcontrol from the GPS unit.

The eTrex may be hard-wired to a serial connec-tor using the Data Cable (see the Garmin web sitewww.garmin.comfor ordering information). Refer tothe wiring diagram and the eTrex unit data connectionillustrated below.

The eTrex does not turn on:

    1. Check to see if the batteries are installed correctly

and that the battery terminals are clean.

It takes more than 10 minutes to get alocation fix:

    1. There may be large obstacles overhead; move to anew location with a clear view of the sky.

    2. See Satellite Reception Tips on page 42.

The arrow on the Navigation Page does notpoint to the destination:

    1. Navigation information is based on your movement. If you are standing still, the information is notupdating.

Since the eTrex is not a magnetic compass it cannotshow you which way you are facing while you are

    standing still.

The eTrex coordinates do not match the loca-tion on your map:

    1. Check to make sure the eTrex is configured to usethe same position format and datum as your map.See page 34.

NOTE: The Auto Power Adapter converts12 VDC to 3 VDC output for the eTrex. Thisadapter is not interchangeable with autopower adapters designed for the Garmin VHF720 and 725, GPS 170, 175, 190 and 195.

Can I use the eTrex indoors? No. The DEMO mode is available, but we suggest that

    only dealers use it.

Do I need to subscribe to a service to use theeTrex? No. The GPS satellites are owned by the United StatesDepartment of Defense (DoD) and have been funded byU.S. taxpayers dollars.Reception of GPS satellite signals is free to everyone.

Does the eTrex work anywhere in the world andin any weather?Yes.

How accurate is a Garmin GPS?The eTrex is accurate to within 15 meters without theDoD-imposed Selective Availability (S/A). Using differ-

ential techniques, the eTrex can be as accurate as 1-5meters. The eTrex is accurate to within 100 meters underS/A.

Another factor that will effect the accuracy of the GPSreceiver is the geometry of the satellites in view of theGPS receiver. A poor geometry situation can provide lessaccurate position readings, and this especially applies

to GPS altitude measurements. The altitude reading onthe GPS unit can vary by +/- 450 ft. depending on thelevel of degradation being imposed under S/A. It is notuncommon to see the altitude continuously drift up anddown when S/A is being imposed.

Why cant I see the display in the daylight?Adjust the contrast (see page 9).

Why cant I interface my computer with theeTrex?Make sure that you have the correct INPUT/OUTPUTformat selected on your eTrex.
