ETSI is… Recognized as Standards Development Organization Created in 1988 as an independent, not-for-profit entity Based in Sophia Antipolis, south of France,

the technology park 654 members from 61 countries http://www.etsi.org/ Download ETSI standards for free !

ETSI member companies… manufacturers, network operators, service providers,

administrations, research bodies and users

providing a forum in which all key players can contribute: GSM, UMTS, DECT, TETRA, SAT COM, DVB, NGN, VoIP, Wireless Access, Powerline, IP Cablecom, … and GRID!

GRID Potential for ETSI ETSI already has:

Clear Intellectual Property Rights IPR policy Many ETSI members are already active GRID stakeholders ETSI organized now 3 GRID PlugtestsTM events ETSI (PTCC) owns high GRID testing potential A neutral position to work and produce consensus based GRID

interoperability Gap Analysis and its evaluation. Existing Technical Bodies already involved in related areas:

TISPAN architecture, security and QoS control can be extended to link GRID with telecom networks

ETSI has the « Know How » in Telecom required by GRID utility +60 cooperation agreements worldwide with SDOs and Foras

TC GRID Terms of Reference (1)

Approved during Board #57 (2006-06-22) Address IT and Telecommunications convergence

Note lack of interoperable GRID solutions Focus on GRID applications and services based on global standards

and associated validation tools Actively involve and support GRID stakeholders

Complement existing activities Interoperability in end-to-end applications Formal test specifications

Develop consensus-based technical specifications and reports Networking widely with relevant standardisation bodies Roadmap to interoperable ICT GRID standards

TC GRID Terms of Reference (2)

Broad technical scope Resource and service access Protocols, middleware Security

Broad view of convergence GRID and Web Services IT and Telecommunications Fixed and mobile communications Ubiquitous services

Broad range of stakeholders Standardisation bodies, fora, organisations Industry (software vendors, manufacturers, network operators,

service providers, …) Research and innovation

Focus of ETSI TC GRID

NOT trying to duplicate standards development already underway in other bodies Aim is to complement progress being made with more formal

standards and test specifications so we can achieve levels of interoperability needed in next generation networks and GRIDs

ETSI uniquely placed to do this: Focus on “the big picture” Ability to address IT and networking convergence Experience in interoperability specification, testing and certification

(e.g. GSM/UMTS, DVB, WiMAX, IPv6, Parlay) Global organisation with extensive cooperation agreements Clear IPR policies Formal recognition by the EC

• One of 3 ESOs

Work Item: Inventory of ICT stakeholders(DTR/GRID-000001-1)

Inventory and analysis of existing and emerging international GRID standards Across range of standards-making bodies

• current, proposed and de facto GRID standards Determine shortcomings

• overlaps, loopholes, inconsistencies• all levels: network to application interfaces

Supporting organisations BT, Alcatel, Siemens, Minefi, INRIA, EADS, FSCOM

12

Work Item: Identification of interoperability gaps (DTR/GRID-000001-2)

Select and propose solutions for identified interoperability gaps

Series of practical recommendations to address them For example:

• compilation of application best practice• definition of profiles, guidelines for operational use• (open source) reference implementations• conformity, compliance test suite specifications• development of test tools• recommendations for additional standards

Supporting organisations BT, Alcatel, Siemens, Minefi, INRIA, EADS, FSCOM

13

Work Item: ICT GRID Interoperability Testing Framework (DTR/GRID-000002)

Define a GRID testing framework Test and validation methodology, approach and tools Propose reuse of tools developed by MTS-IPT (IP testing)

• generate “Requirements Catalogue”• transform existing specifications into formal test scenarios

corresponding to selected interoperability case studies Best practice recommendations in both IT and Telecom Use and complement existing interoperability activities

• events (e.g. Plugtests), profiles, testbeds, test suites, …• GRID but also consider NGN, IPv6 etc

Supporting organisations BT, Alcatel, Siemens, Minefi, INRIA, EADS, FSCOM

TC GRID Cooperation and Liaison

Intention is to identify/foster consensus and move to interoperable solutions supported by conformance tests

Initial positive contact with a number of organisations OGF, NESSI, ITU, Parlay Group, … European Commission

• DG ENTR• DG INFSO Unit F2 and F3

EC Research Programme• GSCG, UniGrids, CoreGRID, NextGRID, GridCoord, COPRAS etc)

ETSI • TISPAN/NGN TC, TC MTS (PTCC)

Need to formalise and develop cooperation
