CHALLENGE: A major hospital’s emergency room (ER) team is connected to the hospital’s PC-based healthcare information system, its services — and to each other. To efficiently handle patient volume and improve the quality of care, this highly mobile team requires information at their fingertips.

SOLUTION: A mobile device with Cisco Jabber™ combined with a Plantronics Voyager Legend™ headset, delivering immediate information and facilitating collaboration among all parties — ensuring they can instantly reach each other regardless of location.

THE DOCTOR IS IN TOUCHDr. Bob Kwun is an ER doctor. His iPad® with

Cisco Jabber and Plantronics Voyager Legend

headset provides him with smart, secure

mobile access to hospital services, his team-

mates, and patient electronic medical records.

As a young boy arrives at the ER with an

injured leg, Dr. Kwun is notified via a Cisco Jabber

instant message (IM) on his iPad. Placing the

Voyager Legend headset on his ear while

accepting the Cisco Jabber call on his iPad,

he begins the collaboration session with the

ER nurse, and then accesses the new patient’s

electronic medical records.

CONNECTED CAREGIVERS After examining the patient’s leg, Dr. Kwun

decides it’s best to confer with an orthopedic

surgeon. Using Cisco Jabber presence

features, he finds that Dr. Ann Carter is on

duty and “available.”

Dr. Kwun requests a videoconference via IM,

then converts to a Cisco Jabber Video™

collaboration session. Dr. Kwun knows that

the Voyager Legend headset’s noise reduction

technology will ensure that both he and

Dr. Carter can clearly hear and be heard in

the busy ER. Dr. Carter recommends X-rays

and says she will meet with Dr. Kwun when

they are complete.

Without removing his headset, Dr. Kwun uses

his iPad and Cisco Jabber softphone to notify

the X-ray department of the incoming patient.

He instructs the X-ray technician to contact

him, along with Dr. Carter, when the X-rays are

ready. Tapping the answer/end button on his

headset and the Cisco Jabber controls on his

iPad, he ends the call.

COLLABORATING ON A DIAGNOSISThe technician notifies both doctors through

Cisco Jabber that the X-rays are available to

view in the hospital’s information system.

Seeing that she is receiving an incoming call

from Dr Kwun, Dr. Carter clicks the answer

button on her Cisco Jabber softphone and her

Voyager Legend headset. She is immediately

connected. Dr. Kwun elevates the call to a

Cisco Jabber Video session, and, together,

they examine the X-rays on a shared screen.

Dr. Carter recommends surgery as soon

as possible.

Dr. Kwun explains the procedure to the boy

and his mother and leaves them in the care

of the ER nurse. As he proceeds to his next

patient, his Voyager Legend headset sends

him an “out of range” alert. Thanks to the

headset’s built-in awareness of proximity to

other paired Bluetooth devices, Dr. Kwun realizes

he left his iPad at the boy’s bedside. He retrieves

it and moves on to his next patient.

ARRANGING FOR ADDITIONAL CARE

While at the boy’s bedside, the ER nurse

uses her iPad with Cisco Jabber to check the

availability of the operating room, surgical

support team, and Dr. Carter. After scheduling

the surgery for that afternoon, she accesses

her Cisco Jabber softphone “buddy” list and

clicks the name of Dr. Carter’s medical

assistant. As the assistant touches the answer

button on her headset, the call is connected

and they discuss procedures. Opening a Cisco

Jabber Video session, they IM Dr. Carter to join.

Dr. Carter provides instructions on the care

and tests needed prior to surgery. They end

their call with a tap to their headsets and a

click to the Cisco Jabber call control. The ER

nurse electronically orders the lab tests. Later

that day the surgery is performed.

CONCLUSIONHealthcare faces many challenges, but improving

the quality of care and controlling costs are

perhaps the two most critical. By streamlining

the communication process and providing

caregivers with instant access to vital information

and team members, Plantronics and Cisco are

helping to solve these challenges.
