ThetudesTableaux("studypictures"),Op.33isthefirstoftwosetsofpianotudescomposedbySergeiRachmaninoff.
Thesesetswereintendedtobe"picturepieces",essentially"musicalevocationsofexternalvisualstimuli".Rachmaninoffdidnotdisclosewhatinspiredeachpiece,stating:"Idon'tbelieveintheartistthatdisclosestoomuchofhisimages.Letthempaintforthemselveswhatitmostsuggests."[1]However,hewillinglysharedsourcesforafewofthesetudeswiththeItaliancomposerOttorinoRespighiwhenRespighiorchestratedthemin1930.

RachmaninoffcomposedtheOp.33tudesTableauxattheIvanovkaestatebetweenAugustandSeptember1911,theyearaftercompletinghissecondsetofpreludes,Op.32.WhiletheOp.33tudesTableauxsharesomestylisticpointswiththepreludes,theyareactuallynotverysimilar.Rachmaninoffconcentratesonestablishingwelldefinedmoodsanddevelopingmusicalthemesinthepreludes.Thereisalsoanacademicfacettothepreludes,ashewrote24ofthem,oneineachofthe24majorandminorkeys.
RachmaninoffbiographerMaxHarrisoncallsthetudesTableaux"studiesin[musical]composition"whiletheyexploreavarietyofthemes,they"investigatethetransformationofratherspecificclimatesoffeelingviapianotexturesandsonorities.Theyarethuslesspredictablethanthepreludesandcompositionallymarkanadvance"intechnique.[2]
RachmaninoffinitiallywroteninepiecesforOp.33butpublishedonlysixin1914.Onetude,inaminorscale,wassubsequentlyrevisedandusedintheOp.39settheothertwoappearedposthumouslyandarenowusuallyplayedwiththeothersix.Performingtheseeighttudestogethercouldbeconsideredtorunagainstthecomposer'sintent,asthesixoriginallypublishedareunifiedthrough"melodiccellularconnections"inmuchthesamewayasinRobertSchumann'sSymphonicStudies.[3]
Differingfromthesimplicityofthefirstfourtudes,Nos.58aremorevirtuosicintheirapproachtokeyboardwriting,callingforunconventionalhandpositions,wideleapsforthefingersandconsiderabletechnicalstrengthfromtheperformer.Also,"theindividualmoodandpassionatecharacterofeachpiece"posemusicalproblemsthatprecludeperformancefromthosenotpossessingatremendousphysicaltechnique.[3]

In1929,conductorandmusicpublisherSergeKoussevitzkyaskedwhetherRachmaninoffwouldselectagroupoftudestableauxforItaliancomposerOttorinoRespighitoorchestrate.ThecommissionedorchestrationswouldbepublishedbyKoussevitzky'sfirmandKoussevitzkywouldconducttheirpremierewiththeBostonSymphonyOrchestra.RachmaninoffagreedandselectedfivetudesfromOp.33andOp.39.Respighirearrangedtheorderoftudes,butwasotherwisefaithfultothecomposer'sintent.HegaveeachtudeadistincttitlefromtheprogrammaticcluesRachmaninoffhadgivenhim:
