O n 14 September, to mark the occasion of the European #ClimaDiplo Week (12-18 September), the Delegation of the European Union, the Embassy of France and the Embassy of Germany hosted a public screening of the award-winning

documentary Demain/Tomorrow (Kesho), at the Goethe-Institute. The Minister of State, Vice President’s Office, Union and Environment, Hon. January Makamba, took part in the event together with the French Ambassador, H.E Mrs. Malika Berak, the

German Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. John Reyels and the EU Chargé d’Affaires, Ms Luana Reale. This globetrotting documentary focuses on people who are promoting new initiatives and innovative approaches in areas such as agriculture, energy, habitat, economy, education and democracy. In her concluding remarks, Ms. Reale stressed the importance of international cooperation to fight climate change. She explained how the EU remains at the forefront in global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2020.

It is a pleasure to present an overview of the main events in the life of the Delegation of the European Union to Tanzania and the

East African Community over the past months.

Visiting missions, joint activities with Government, civil society and business and industry and a visit by EUNAVFOR

ATALANTA; the Delegation was in full swing in the last months of 2016.

We are now closing the books and preparing for the new year 2017.

#EuropeanInvestmentinTz Report Launched

O n Wednesday 26th October in Dar es Salaam, the EU Ambassador to Tanzania and the EAC, Roeland van de Geer, hosted an event jointly with the Board of Directors of the European Business Group (EUBG) to celebrate the launch of the report European Investment in Tanzania: How European investment contributes to industrialisation and development in Tanzania. The event was attended by the European Union heads of mission, the ambassadors of Switzerland and Norway, representatives from multilateral organisations, members of the Government and the members of the EUBG.

The report is a joint effort between the European Union which funded the report, the European Union Business Group whose members provided expertise and input for the report, and the Government of Tanzania.

A Call for Proposals has now been launched with deadlines in February 2017.

F our Members of the Development Committee of the European Parliament(MEPs) visited Tanzania in September, to study nutrition and food security, notably the implementation of the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (NAFSN) in Tanzania, which is part of the Kilimo Kwanza initiative; and to learn about the challenges and opportunities for the agriculture sector.

During the three-day visit, the MEPs met with the Government of Tanzania, civil

society organisations and farmers groups, EU Member States and other

development partners and representatives from the private sector, including

the EU Business Group. The MEPs also travelled to Iringa to visit the Tanzanian Tea Research Institute (TRIT) and UNILEVER, a

tea processing company, engaged with tea out-growers in capacity building programmes.

MEPS OF THE DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY VISIT TANZANIA

I n the week of 19 September, the 71th General Assembly of the

United Nations (UNGA) met in New York.

Migration, climate change and the conflict in Syria were the main

themes discussed during this year's UNGA.

President Tusk of the European Council delivered the main EU

statement to the UNGA on 21 September and High Representative and

Vice President Mogherini and nine of the Commissioners of the Europe-

SCI-GAIA WORKSHOP

O n 17 September, The EU Political Counsellor, Ms Luana Reale joined Chief

Secretary Ambassador John Kijazi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Augustine Mahiga

and hundreds of people in a charity walk to raise funds to help Kagera quake victims.

The 5km #Walk4Kagera, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African

Community in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office and the State House

collected a total of Sh1.5 billion. The walk was led by Former President Dr Ally Hassan

Mwinyi accompanied by government officials and representatives from diplomatic

missions in the country.

EU JOIN LEGS IN #Walk4Kagera

O n 5 September, the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) held the

third “Energising Scientific Endeavour through Science Gateways and

e- Infrastructures in Africa” (Sci-GaIA) project workshop, at the Julius

Nyerere International Convention Centre.

The workshop was attended by government officials, academics, scientists and

development partners and the guest of honour was the Minister for Education,

Science and Technology, Prof. Joyce Ndalichako.

The Sci-GaIA project is funded through the EU Horizon 2020. In his opening remarks of the workshop themed "Open Science in

Support of Education", the EU Head of Cooperation Mr. José Correia Nunes reiterated the European Parliament's call for

research as an investment in our future and the need to put it at the heart of the EU’s blueprint for smart, sustainable and

inclusive growth and jobs.

O n 28 September EU Ambassador Roeland van de Geer joined

Media CSOs in celebrating the Right to Know Day. The Tanzania

Human Rights Defenders' Coalition (THRDC), the Media Institute

of Southern Africa Tanzania Charter (MISA-Tan) and the Coalition

of the Right to Information (CoRI) organised a full day workshop

with discussions around media recommendations for the UPR, Me-

dia Service Act 2016 and Access to Information Act 2016. During

the day, MISA-Tan also launched the Access to Information report

on public institutions and awarded public institutions with the Golden Key (for the most open) and the Golden Padlock (for the

most closed). EU Ambassador Roeland van de Geer was present to give remarks, launch the report and handout the awards.

Commemorating the Right to Know Day

T he EU joined the United Nations and Tanzania on 25 November to mark the International Day on Ending violence Against Women and the beginning of the

#16DaysofActivism. The day began with a 3km march in the city with more than 200 people. The Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Hon. Ummy Mwalimu, received the partici-pants in the march and officially launched the 16 days of activism in a ceremony at Millennium Towers.

S tand Up for Children’s Rights! was

the theme for this year’s Human Right’s

Day, held on 13 December at the

University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

The EU together with the Gender Centre

of UDSM and the Dutch Embassy

organized presentations, panel discussions

and film screening on the Child protection

and Children’s rights.

T he EU organized meetings with

media stakeholders on 21 October

and 17 November. Editors, senior

journalists and officials from media

organizations discussed with EU

Managing Director for Africa,

Ambassador Koen Vervaeke on the

state of Europe and EU-Africa

relations during his visit in October.

On both occasions EU Ambassador Roeland van de Geer discussed EU-EAC relations and the EU-Tanzania partnerships on

human rights, political affairs and development cooperation.

Kalemani launched

the upgraded Ikondo-Matembwe mini-grid in Njombe Region,

on 15 November.

Through its 65 km of medium and low voltage lines, the

mini-grid serves seven villages, for a total of 1,142 users,

including over 950 households and private businesses, eight

schools, five health dispensaries and eight water pumps.

O n 3 October

started its visit to

the port of Dar es

Salaam.

The reception on board was attended by the diplomatic

community and government officials including H.E.

Malika Berak, French Ambassador, Hon. Augustine

Mahiga, Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Jaap Frederiks,

Dutch Ambassador and Roeland van de Geer, EU Head of

Delegation.

On 31 October and 1 November, the EU Delegation

participated in a two-day EAC-EU-IMF Conference on

Regional Integration in Arusha, Tanzania. The theme of

the conference was “Regional Integration in the EAC:

Making the most of the Common Market on the Road to

a Monetary Union.”

EAC Secretary General, Dr Mfumekelo visited the EU

Delegation on the 6 December, together with his team to

discuss cooperation between the EU and the EAC

I n the last three months, the EU and UN have taken joint initiatives in different regions in the country to promote

development projects and the Sustainable Development Goals.

O n Saturday 29 October, the EU together with UNESCO

launched a Community Art Space project in Loliondo. The EU has

contributed EUR 249,987 (approx TSH 60 million) to the project

which encompasses the Ololosokwan and Soit-Sambu wards of the

Loliondo Division in Ngorongoro District-Arusha. The event was

attended by EU Delegation’s Head of Economics and Governance,

Mr Olivier Coupleux and by UNESCO.

The Community Art space is central in this project as it provides a

physical environment for the Community's social and economic

prospects in preserving the Maasai cultural heritage; and in

producing and trading cultural products and services.

EU-UN Forge Cooperation

buildings of the Centre, a project funded by the EU

and managed by the University.

the Faraja Centre in Arusha. The Centre is funded

by the EU through the IOM to help young girls.

The EU Head of Delegation, Roeland van de Geer

giving a public lecture to the students and staff of the

Nelson Mandela University in Arusha during the

EU-UN joint field mission to raise awareness on the

Global Goals.

On 28th November EU and UN visited Ruaha and

Iringa Universities, in Iringa region. UN Resident

Coordinator, H.E. Alvaro Rodriguez spoke of the

importance of the SDGs and the strategic

partnership between the EU and the UN.
