This year at San Gabriel Mission we will be having chang-es in the Claretian community priests. This happens every 3 to 6 years. We will be getting a new Pastor and two new assistants. Fr. Tony, our current Pastor, will be assigned to a new ministry in Fresno, CA. We give thanks to God and Fr. Renovate & Celebrate

Next weekend a second collection will be taken during all the Masses for our Renovate & Celebrate grassroots cam-paign for the beautification of our churches and grounds. You have witnessed how worthwhile your investments have been with the recent painting of the Chapel among other finished projects. Our next project is the paving of the parking lot we are so close to our needed goal to begin with this huge undertaking. Your unwavering support is greatly appreciated. God’s blessings on you and your loved ones.

Pastor’s Reflec on

One constant refrain that we say about ourselves as Catholics is that we are a Eu-charistic centered church. While this is true, what we tend to emphasize in this statement is the priestly element: that without priests we cannot have the Eucha-rist. What is usually not emphasized in this statement is that to be a Eucharistic community means to be Christ centered. To have the courage to receive Holy Commun-ion means to enter into communion with the Risen Lord and with the community of which we are part of. Howev-er, receiving Holy Communion has become for many a personal devotion that has nothing to do neither with the Risen Lord nor with the people around us. We come to mass in our own personal bubbles and we leave without having been touched, moved or challenged by the “Holy Communion” with the Risen Lord in the brothers and sis-ters sitting around us. What does it mean to be a commu-nity if I do not even know or care to know the people sit-ting next to me at mass? This Sunday we celebrate the solemnity of Corpus Christi: the Body and Blood of Christ. Holy Communion is not an object or thing that we receive, but rather an in-vitation to enter into communion with the Risen Lord. We receive a relationship, rather than a thing. To receive the Body of Christ implies receiving the fullness of His life; to be challenged and transformed by his life, teach-ings and commandments. The other side of this commun-ion with the Risen Lord is that it demands communion with the people around us. To have communion among ourselves means to be willing to be touched, challenged and transformed by the lives, needs and concerns of the people around us. To be in communion is to form com-munity and a community cannot exist without relation-ships. We affirm the “real” presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, for this is in fact what we believe. The Eucha-rist is the “real” presence and not merely a symbol. How-ever, there is another step that must follow this affirma-tion. The affirmation, recognition, and acceptance of the “real” presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist must also move us to the affirmation, recognition, and acceptance of the other “real” presence of the Risen Lord in the people around us. The Holy Eucharist cannot merely be or re-main a personal devotion; it has to bring us into commun-ion (relationship) with one another to form community through concrete relationships. Fr. THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST 3

Algo que repetimos constantemente como católicos es que somos una iglesia centrada en la Eucaristía. Aunque esto es verdad, muchas veces ponemos el énfasis de esta afirmación en el sacerdocio: sin el sacerdote no tendríamos la Eucaristía. Lo que muy poco se menciona en esta afirmación es que ser una comunidad eucarística significa ser una comunidad cen-trada en Cristo Resucitado. Tener el valor para recibir la Sagrada Eucaristía implica entrar en comunión con el Cristo Resucitado y con la comunidad de la cual somos parte. Sin embargo, recibir la Eucaristía se ha convertido para muchos en una devoción personal que tiene muy poco que ver con el Cristo Resucitado o con la gente en nuestra comunidad. Venimos a misa como en burbujas sin ser tocados, retados o impactados por la “Sagrada Comunión” del Cristo Resucita-do presente en los hermanos (as) con quienes compartimos la misa. ¿Qué significa ser comunidad si no conocemos ni te-nemos interés en conocer con los que compartimos la misa? Este domingo celebramos la solemnidad de Corpus Cris-ti: el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. La Sagrada Comunión no es un objeto o cosa que recibimos, sino una comunión que el Cristo Resucitado nos ofrece. Es una relación lo que recibimos y no una cosa. Recibir el Cuerpo de Cristo impli-ca recibir la plenitud de su vida; ser transformado y retado por su vida, mandamientos y enseñanzas. La otra exigencia de esta comunión con el Cristo Resucitado es que exige una comunión con nuestra comunidad. Entrar en comunión en la comunidad implica dejarse impactar, retar y transformar por las vidas, necesidades y preocupaciones de la gente que son parte de nuestra comunidad. Estar en comunión es formar comunidad y la comunidad no puede existir si no hay rela-ciones entre nosotros. Afirmamos la presencia “real” de Cristo en la Sagrada Eucaristía, esta es nuestra profesión de fe. La Eucaristía es presencia “real” y no simplemente un símbolo. Sin embar-go, esta afirmación requiere dar otro paso. La afirmación, reconocimiento y aceptación de la presencia “real” de Cristo en la Sagrada Eucaristía tiene que llevarnos a afirmar, reco-nocer y aceptar la otra presencia “real” de Cristo en los her-manos (as) con quien estamos en comunidad. La Sagrada Eucaristía no puede permanecer solo como una devoción personal, nos tiene que llevar a entrar en comunión con otros para formar comunidad por medio de nuestras relaciones y diálogos. P. Faith Formation Corner Spring Cleaning for the Soul

When a home is closed up during a long stuffy winter, Spring is a time to open it up, air it out and give it a brisk thorough cleaning. The last few weeks of Spring offer us the opportunity for a brisk, thorough cleansing of our souls, too. Let in the sunlight. Raise the shades and illuminate the dark and dusty places of your life to reveal whatever is keeping you from a close relationship with God. Is accu-mulating money or possessions your top priority? Are you trying harder to impress others than working to please God? Do bad habits (excessive food, alcohol, or drugs) dominate your life? Make an honest spiritual assessment and get busy cleaning! Clear out cluttered closets. Is there something stuck in the corners of your conscience that needs to be cleaned out and thrown away so you can put God first in your life? Do you harbor unconfessed sin or an old grudge or an unresolved disagreement? Seek forgiveness in the Sacrament of Rec-onciliation, perform your penance, make amends, and let it go! Freshen up. What spiritual change have you been mean-ing to make? Do you need to make weekly Mass more of a priority? Does your prayer life need refreshing? Have you wanted to learn more about your faith? PRAY FOR OUR CLARETIANS Please keep our Claretians in your prayers as they will be traveling to Chicago for an annual Claretian Conference. All of our priests will be out the entire week of June 4-8. We will have communion services for the 6:30AM Masses, Except for Tuesday (6/5), we will have a priest for that morning, and all 6:30PM Masses will also be only com-munion services. We will have a visiting priest helping with our 12 Noon Masses for the week.

When walking down the primary wing of Mis-sion Elementary, students, faculty, staff and visitors could not help but be touched by this beautiful poppy Memorial Wall created by our primary students. Through this project, students learned that the “poppy” is a sym-bol of Memorial Day. It was inspired by a poem called In Flanders Field, by Canadian soldier John McCrae and memorialized by Moina Michael as she campaigned to have the poppy emblem recognized by govern-ments, veteran agencies and the general public. As a Mission parish community we join together and pray for our brave soldiers and their families.
