The Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Book of Wisdom gives the first reading to present an argument in defense of the conquering Israelites over the pagan Canaanites’ contention of cruelty and injustice as conquerors’ The author of the Book of Wisdom emphasizes Israel/s God is absolute and above human criticism. The opening verse is directed to God who has always shown an equality to all, unlike the evil (the Canaanites were known for their sacrifice of children to their gods) whose weakness and insecurity have prompted them to function unjustly by the strength they have. The Israelite God has always shown an intelligent balance between what is just and merciful, for He acts only when His “power is disbelieved.” He has never been audacious or bold; He has consistently controlled His might which is His power; He has taught the Israelites by His righteous deeds. His relationship with them has made them hope of repentance of their sins. Matthew presents a continuation of what was presented last week in Jesus’ use of parables in His teaching. This week the parable illustrates the faith one has in the Day of Judgment. God’s judgments now reveal a quality of supreme excellence of His Wisdom. The true seeker of Wisdom acts with humble dependence in God without temerity or audacious sacrifice. The parable presented today shows in each instance how the small (the humble and upright) master the big. The weed among the wheat, the mustard seed, and the leaven conquer eventually. Jesus equates the smallness of these three elements with the final judgment. God tolerates the unfaithful, for the faith community is not one of “the elect.” The final judgment will determine the destiny of the righteous ones and evil ones. His judgment shall purify His Kingdom. Jesus’ lesson is “tolerance” of the evil, for God and His angels shall sort them out in the end. Tolerance must lead

to reformation and positive action, including the search for holiness. However, the counter action must be realistic. Like Wisdom in the Old Testament reading balance is needed

similar to the balance in God’s actions. Bad example can serve for good like the removal of weed at harvest; or seeing the

good from what a small seed produces; or knowing the good that yeast will produce the desired bread. The lesson is the

same as last week. Truth comes from cause and effect and understanding comes from purpose and effect.

WAYS TO GIVE

During this time of closures throughout the church, please consider keeping up your weekly contributions to

St. Florian. Sunday Masses have resumed but the obligation to attend is still commuted. If you are not attending Mass,

please consider these options for giving.

Sign up for Online Giving by visiting our parish website at www.saintflorian.org and selecting the “Donate” link in the top right hand corner.

US MAIL: Contributions can be sent through the mail service to: St. Florian Church

PO Box 187 United, PA 15689

GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Bishop Malesic desires to recognize all couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary during the calendar year 2020. The Jubilarians, their children, relatives or friends should contact their local parish office to register couples for this recognition. Ideally, the Jubilarians will be invited to join the bishop for a special Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass to be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Sunday, September 20, 2020. Even though circumstances may not permit participation in this Mass, all couples will receive a scroll signed by the Bishop commemorating their anniversary.

Prayer Chain

Those with prayer intentions are asked to contact the FAITH

FORMATION CENTER. Please call 724-423-5087 and your

request will be forwarded to those who have agreed to take part

in this special ministry. New members on our Parish Prayer

Chain are always welcome to join.

PARISH UPDATE Praying the Rosary aloud, starting 30 minutes before Masses, has resumed. The spiritual benefits of this far

outweighs any added Coronavirus risk that is minimized by the participants wearing face masks and keeping safe

distances. Let’s place ourselves under Mary’s protection and ask Our Lady to intercede with her Son for a swift end to

the pandemic. A total of 161 people attended our three “Sunday Masses” last weekend, up three from the previous

week.

ROUTINE PASTORAL VISITS TO THE HOMEBOUND and to persons in care facilities is still not permitted under Diocesan guidelines for the pandemic. However, upon request, Fr. John will readily visit anyone who feels a need for the sacraments. Just call the parish office.

10-YEAR LOAN REPAYMENT REPORT

To date, we have paid back $115,016.98 (including $10,817.46 in interest) on our $300,000 loan plus $35,294.54 interest. Because of extra payments made early, and the temporary suspension of interest payments for the last three months due to the pandemic, our loan amortization is now 20 months ahead of schedule, with full repayment expected in October 2026, and a projected parish savings of $10,200.29 for this early repayment.

DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL (DLA) REPORT FOR JULY

Our gift and pledge total stands at $44,157. This is $14,899 over our Diocesan Target and is the amount that comes back

to St. Florian for our parish needs. One hundred seventy-three (173) donors have contributed, which is 88% of our

participation goal. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU ALSO FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Par ish

during the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your families and our Parish Family as well!

Read Fr. John’s Homily at www.saintflorian.org under the “Parish Life” tab.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION br ings results! Consider these words of Jesus spoken by way of

locution to a Benedictine monk: “Whenever a special need or intention is entrusted to you, appeal to

my Eucharistic Heart. I am moved to pity so often as you appeal to my Eucharistic Heart, for it is the

living organ of my merciful love and the means by which you will obtain from Me all that you ask.

My Heart beats with love in the Sacrament of the Altar…ever open to receive your petitions, your

pleas, your desires.” (In Sinu Jesu p. 41) For July 7-8, the following hours had only one adorer: 10

am, 12 Noon, 1 am, 2 am, and 3 am. At least two adorers should be present for each hour .

Thank you.
