Euclid Pet Pals (216) 289-2057
I hope everyone is enjoying a respite from the hectic holiday season and
wish you all a happy, healthy new year. It has been a busy, but fun, year
for all of us. We are happy to report that 190 dogs and puppies and 113
cats and kittens were adopted in 2015. Better yet 125 dogs and 3 cats
were returned to their families. We are proud of our record.
We want to extend our thanks to Darah Armstrong and
everyone on the Sims Buick team at 940 Babbitt Road
for inviting us to be part of their community day
celebration on October 3rd. Four hearty volunteers
braved the cold and rain to set up an adoption center at
Sims to encourage people to adopt a pet from our
shelter. Thank you Jane Brockway, Vicki Burrington,
Pat Barnes, and Helen Vladic (pictured below) for
giving up a precious Saturday to be part of this event.

The New Year is upon us, and many of us have made resolutions to improve our health and diet in our quest to live longer. We are hearing a lot about probiotics these days. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that are good for your health. Changing the microflora in our bodies can profoundly affect the body’s health and healing ability. Veterinary medicine has known about such benefits since 1928 when the first rumen content transplants were done for cows that suffered from metabolic disease. Traditional medicine did not really heed the results because many believed a cow’s stomach was not like ours. However, despite anatomical differences, we are all hosts for huge colonies of small organisms that keep us alive. Our bodies are made of millions of cells that are home for billions of bacteria and microorganisms. Bacteria that reside in our intestines make up a complex filtration system. They decide what nutrients get digested, absorbed, or converted into toxic matter. More than 72% of our immune system is located along the intestinal tract. Slight changes to our diet, stress, or modified probiotic intake all affect those organisms. Changing what we do and what
we eat can make a difference. Recent research supports that premise. By feeding rats a specific diet for only two weeks, scientists were able to induce colon cancer. The amazing news is that changing what the rats ate reversed their colon cancer in just TWO HOURS. We are learning more about the benefits of maintaining a healthy environment in which the good bacteria will thrive. Some celebrities have touted trendy treatments, such as colon flushing, detoxes, and cleanses. Fecal transplants are being used to treat intestinal diseases and anorexia. There is a long road ahead to learn all we need to know about prebiotics and probiotics. Pharmaceutical companies are focusing resources on this new frontier and how to keep bacteria inside us beneficial and healthy. I believe this will lead to new mainstream treatments for many illnesses that are currently incurable.

This issue is dedicated to the memory of volunteer Vince Bernardo, who passed away on December 25th. We will miss his kind heart and cheerful greetings. We could always count on Vince to share his love with the animals in our care.
Special Donations
We have two special
funds described below.
If you are interested in
supporting a specific
fund, please note it on
your check.
SOPHIE’S FUND
(for surgeries)
Sophie’s Fund was
created when a dog in our
care, named Sophie,
needed an operation to
repair a broken femur and
dislocated kneecap. A
plea was made to the
community for donations
to fund the surgery. The
response was so
overwhelming that EPP
was able to pay for
Sophie’s operation and
set aside money to be
used expressly for
surgeries.
FRED’S FUND
Money from Fred’s Fund
enables us to pay for
testing cats entering our
shelter for FIV,
heartworm, and leukemia.
Screening incoming cats
helps protect the cats in
our shelter. We also want
to be certain that the cats
we adopt out are healthy
and will not transmit a
disease to other pets in
their new homes. The
fund was created to honor
the memory of Frederick
Schmidt, father of
Sharon Jensen.

Congratulations to Ann Marie Bell and Paul Meade. They are the Pet Pals Board’s choice as 2015 volunteers of the year. Both were instrumental in raising the funds needed to pay for dog Millie’s heart surgery. Paul is also the one who posts pictures and information about dogs available for adoption on petfinder.com. Ann Marie has assumed the duties for planning and executing our Adopt-a-Thons at Pet Supplies Plus. It is always a difficult decision to choose a volunteer of the year. There are so many wonderful people who give their time and talents, and we appreciate every one of them!
IF YOU ARE AN ONLINE SHOPPER, please start with www.smile.amazon.com If you shop via this site, Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase to Euclid Pet Pals. Be sure to
designate EPP as your charity. It’s fun. It’s easy, and you are helping the animals at our shelter.
Pet Pals Board members (shown left to right) Sandy Payne, Pat Barnes, Patti Burlingham, and Bill Kermavner were sworn in on December 3, 2015, by Mayor Cervenik. Commissioned Board members serve two-year terms. Congratulations and THANK YOU for all you do.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO COMPOSE OUR NEWSLETTERS. If you can help, please call Fay Miller at (216) 289-2057.

Share your love for pets. The Ohio Pet License Plates
are vehicle registration tags that raise funds for
education, spay and neuter of pets for low-income
families, and for dogs and cats adopted from qualifying
agencies. Even if you have already renewed your plates, you can still buy pet
friendly plates for just $25. If it’s not time to renew, your license fees will be pro-
rated. Go to your deputy registrar’s office or call 1-800-589-TAGS. Visit
www.petsohio.com for more information. Pet Pals received a $2,000 grant
from the Ohio Pet Fund in April to help pay for spays and neuters. Thank you!
