COLLEGESmall
Eugene Lang College is a small liberal arts college at The
New School in New York City. We offer our students a small
college experience within a large city. The personal interac-
tion, faculty attention and academic freedom are surrounded
by the unlimited possibilities in New York City. What started
25 years ago as an experiment in a different approach to
education has evolved into a thriving program. Resources at
The New School and surrounding universities give students
the tools they need to succeed. Students are able to create
their own curriculum and take classes that they believe are
relevant. Unlike other colleges, they can mix areas of study
such as Urban Studies and Economics. We cater to what our
students want instead of what other institutions think they
need. They come to us knowing what they want in a college.
We are here to deliver.
“I chose Lang because of its small, seminar style classes. I think that discussion among peers, guided by a professor, is the best way to analyze texts. In seminars, students learn how to
verbally express themselves which prepares them for written expression. It teaches and allows students to focus on creating unique arguments supported by strong evidence, which ultimately
is the goal of good writing.”
With help from Lang and the convenience of the big city, internships are endless. Students learn by doing. Lang believes in the impor-tance of giving every student the chance to get out of the classroom and gain working experience in education, entertainment, politics, etc. They gain experience as well as networking opportunities. In-ternships range from non-profit organizations, medical centers, poli-tics, photography, publishing, and much more. Our students have interned at places such as MTV, Sony Entertainment, Cookshop Classroom, and The Oprah Magazine.
Our students graduate ready to make a difference in the world. In addition to internships, we offer stu-dents a chance to make a difference through service-based learning. Our service learning projects can take students to a public high school in the Bronx or to the sight of a natural disaster in Asia. They are able to put their education and skills to work in dif-
ferent ways and in different places.

“I work with fifth graders at P.S.33 teaching creative dance. This not only taught me about education and teaching techniques, but also taught me what to look for in a teacher, and how to maximize the amount of information and reasoning that
I can obtain.”

Here at Lang we know the importance of learning from professors as well as peers. Students share ideas with one another and engage in small seminar-style discussions. Our professors are not only men and women with extensive education but they also have working experience in their fields. The So-cratic circle setting both challenges and en-lightens students. Instead of be lectured to, they are an active participant in discussions.

Your interests are what make your education work. Lang believes that students should not be limited by a con-ventional curriculum. Our education style has an entre-preneurial spirit that allows students to blend their dif-ferent interests together and create their own college plan. Instead of focusing on requirements, our advisors help students chose classes that help them develop their ideas and beliefs. They are there to show students what Lang and The New School have to offer. Unlike many colleges and universities we do not have strict ma-jors and many general requirements. Students pick to study everything from education studies and the arts to philosophy and economics. Not only can they dedicate themselves to these areas, but they can combine them with numerous minors that we offer. No combination is far fetched. Lang is for students who want full control of their education.
Our campus is located in NYC’s bustling Greenwich Vil-lage. Students not only have a unique and diverse col-lege, but they have New York City as their playground. The Village has endless shops, bistros, clubs, art galler-ies, and restaurants. The area is an urban thrill filled with a very diverse crowd and atmosphere. There is some-thing for everyone.
Why should your learning experience end when you leave the classroom? It shouldn’t. At Lang there are endless opportunities to learn and experience new things. Re-sources at The New School, New York University and Columbia University are available to Lang students. New York itself is a resource. Inspiration can be dawn from the artists in subway stations and the demonstrations on Wall Street. Several of our academic programs such as urban studies, art, and history use New York as a
learning opportunity. “My favorite thing about New York is just being able to go out. As a writer, the second I step outside of my house I’m given dozens of stories to work with…When you’re on a traditional campus, school becomes the only thing in your life. Here you can have school as just one part
of your life.” –Alex Vadukul
