mouse deer. The mouse deerwas cornered at the edge of theriver. With nowhere to go itsuddenly turned around,became fierce, and chased afterthe dogs! In this transformation,a timid mouse deer, turningaround on the edge of beingdestroyed, Parameswara sawthe sign he needed for the placeto start his kingdom. It sohappened he was sitting undera Melaka tree. So this is howMelaka got its name. This is setas the theme for MAPFest –‘Turning Around’, a metaphorfor spiritual transformationthrough the creative drive.'

This festival remains free andaccessible for all. ContinuingMelaka's rich history as a centrefor meetings and exchangebetween cultures, it will createopportunities for artists and artlovers to share in each others'work and perspectives.

Over the next three days, youwill see artists from Malaysia,Australia, across Asia andEurope responding toMelaka's sites and the festivaltheme of 'transformation' inperformance, visual arts, filmand participatory projects

MAPFest is developing a strongreputation for bringing leadingMalaysian, Australian andinternational artists together inperformances and exhibitionsthroughout Melaka's stunningheritage precinct, including themajestic ruins of St Paul'sChurch. Festival events are freeto all, and attract thousands ofspectators.

The festival theme draws directlyfrom Melakan history andtradition. On his inspiration,Tony Yap says: 'Looking to starta new kingdom, Parameswarawas resting with his entourageon the side of a river when theirdogs began chasing a small

Eulogy for the LivingEulogy for the Living is a large-scaleperformance, a spectacular and soulfulfinale to the festival, directed by TonyYap, danced by festival artists, and withlive music, and stunning projections.Eulogy for the Living is a kind ofdevotional work for making our way inthe world, an internal journey into thememory of body and soul. Downstairs,the cowboy-clad artist offersbrewed coffee, chili beans andconversation – contemporaryshaman meets Broke BackMountain.

We are pleased this year tobe able to present artistsfrom Malaysia, Singaporeand Australia, workingacross painting,photography, installationand video. In again workingwith the National Universityof Singapore and BadanWarisan Malaysia, we havetwo key venues – the TunTan Cheng Lock Centre forAsian Architectural andUrban Heritage and No.8Heeren Street HeritageCentre.

This visual arts platformallows this diverse groupingof artists to presentcollectively, giving space forthe individual’s voice andalso the emergence ofshared concerns.

At this point in time, morethan ever, we are privatelyand collectively confrontedwith an overload, be itenvironmental, bodily,financial or cultural.Increasingly we are tested inour ability to absorb, re-orientate and ultimately go

Theculmination of a decade of landand body dysfunction, the artistplays out the vulnerability,disorientation and near-lunacyof existence.

Autorickshaw driver Amal is content withthe small, but vital, role he serves - drivingcustomers around New Delhi as quicklyand safely as possible. But his sense ofduty is tested by an eccentric, agingbillionaire, who, moved by Amal's humility,bequeaths him his entire estate beforepassing away. Body Weather is a comprehensive trainingand performance practice that investigatesthe intersections of bodies and theirenvironments.  Bodies are not conceived asfixed and separate entities but are - just likethe weather - constantly changing.

In this short workshop we will focus onsome aspects of touch. Touch has alwaysbeen a key element in the survey of thedancing body. Touch makes us aware of theworld inside and outside of us. To touch isto be touched. We will explore touch andsome possible ways it can lead to dance.
