A Note from Father

Dear Parishioners, Peace and joy be with you.

In the past two Visitor issues of our Diocesan Paper, Bishop Kettler has communicated to us about the importance of future planning within the Diocese Saint Cloud before he is required to submit his resignation to the Holy Father in Nov. of 2019.

Bishop Donald Kettler since the spring of 2017 established a Diocesan Strategic Pastoral Planning Commission to make recommendations in addressing the following questions: 1. What does it mean to have “quality” parish life? 2. What resources does a parish need to have that quality of life? 3. How can we sustain 131 parishes with a projected 57 priests under the age of

70 as we look to the future? 4. How do we maintain a Catholic presence in the 16 counties, 12,500 square

miles, of the Diocese of St. Cloud? 5. What makes your parish special? 6. What substantial recommendations do you have for the Diocese regarding this

future Diocesan Planning? A process was developed where a Special Focus groups were established to begin compiling information.

The First Group was a special Task Force made up of clergy, religious, and lay members of the Diocese to begin discussions and establish a timeline for implementation.

The Second Group was a meeting with the clergy throughout the Diocese, which took place in the fall of 2017.

The Third Group was Deanery meetings of clergy and representatives from each parish. Our Deanery met in November at Alexandria, Minnesota. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of sixteen parishes in the Morris/Alexandria Deanery. There are a total of 11,516 Catholics in our Deanery, of this total our parish population is 1118 baptized members. After Alexandria we are the second largest parish in the Deanery. The other cities where our fifteen parishes are located in the Deanery are in size from largest to smallest: Glenwood, Osakis, Wheaton, Belle River, Brandon, Millerville, Elbow Lake, Browns Valley, Chokio, Villard, Reno Twp, Herman, Kensington, and Tintah.

The Fourth Group involves the pastor, trustees & parish council members of each parish, which will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 20th at the Parish Council meeting.

The Fifth Group is to invite parishioners to share their thoughts and to especially present responses to the Bishop’s question: What substantial recommendations do you have for the Diocese regarding this future Diocesan Planning? This meeting is planned for Sat., March 17th at 10:30 am. I invite parishioners to ponder this question and come share their thoughts at the meeting or email or mail your response to the parish office.

Information gathered from parishes around the Diocese need to submit their proposals before April 30th, 2018. Please keep attentive to future Visitor articles and communication in our parish bulletin.

God bless you. Sincerely in Christ,

Father Todd Schneider
