Breakout Sessions by Torkel G Nielsen (DTU Aqua): Special Issue I and necessary improvements for manuscript. WP4 Chapter to be submitted for review in June. Scientific Highlights for 18 Month Report drafted by TGIN, AG (not present) and KF. Actions: AMitra: finalise WP4 Chapter for Special Issue KFlynn: supply detail on mixotrophs planned/upcoming workshops to Project Office

WP5 Breakout Session:

US collaborations: Although US co-authors have participated in preparing the chapter based on the WP for the Special Issue, links with US collaborators are weak and not easy to re-inforce. EU collaborations: WP5 Nordic partners have applied to the Nordic Council of Ministers (NORDEN; http://www.norden.org/en) for a pilot project that could potentially lead to a regional center of excellence on the TRIAD multi-stock (mackerel, herring, blue whiting) research and management. NORDEN has recommended reapplication in May 2013 due to political sensitivity of the research. Lead author (Geir Huse) and co-authors will engage ICES Working Groups WGWIDE (Aug 2012) and/or WGIPS (Dec 2012) to build up multi-lateral support for the research. Breakout Session Minutes by V. Trenkel: Participants: Patrizio Mariani (PM), Haritz Arrizabalaga (HA), John Pinnegar (JP), Verena Trenkel (VT), Patrick Lehodey (PL), Dougie Speirs (DS), Hjalmar Hatun (HH), Geir Huse (GH; partially), Brian MacKenzie (BMK; partially by skype); Ivo Grigorov (partially) Links with WP1, data contribution and needs and data papers for special issue 1) Subcontract with ICES relative to WP5 data needs The subcontract with ICES will be managed by WP1. Requested data (Table 1) shold ideally be obtained before the summer holidays, to minimise delays. The data sets will be used for different

analyses and models: bluefin tuna migration and spatial distribution analyses (by BRM), blue whiting models (by DS, VT and JP). After some discussions several useful data sets were identified which ICES can provide. It is envisaged that the data exist already in electronic format and that the main tasks consists in extracting them. Data set 1: Stock assessement results (total biomass, spawner biomass, recruits and the in numbers) and corresponding input data file (landings and discards data, mean weight at age, maturity, etc. at stock area level) for selected stocks/species (see table below) for all years available in the assessments. Data set 3 Acoustic survey derived fish biomass estimates by age/length by ICES rectangle and zooplankton estimats as reported in WGNAPES reports. These estimates might be available as part of the stock files for blue whiting, mackerel and Norwegian Spring Spawning Herring (NSSH) or stored in the data base managed by WGNAPES ("PGNAPES data base"). Surveys: International ecosystem survey in the Nordic Seas, International Blue whiting spawning stock survey (from 2004) and International Ecosystem Summer Survey in the Nordic Seas (IESSNS) Years: as far back as possible Species: blue whiting, NSSH, mackerel Notes concerning data set 3: 1) If ICES is unable to provide the survey biomass estimates prepared by WGNAPES, other routes for gaining access to these data need to be explored. In this case Geir Huse and Hjalmar Hatun will discuss the matter with their colleagues. The prefereed solution is to get acess to the estimates (not the raw survey data!) via ICES. 2) If data set 3 can be obtained we propose to write data papers (one for each species or perhaps even survey/species) for the special issue in ESSD Journal with the first authors being those suggested by WGNAPES. In this case the biomass estimates would need to be stored in PANGAEA which will require clarifying the data rights issue. 2) Stomach content data CEFAS (partner 17) hosts a stomach content data base called DAPSTOM (http://www.cefas.defra.gov.uk/our-science/fisheries-information/fish-stomach-records.aspx) internet searchable data base and certified under a UK scheme, which will include the blue whiting data collected under EURO-BASIN. John Pinnegar will write a stomach data paper for the special issue. As Dapstom is already accessible over the internet it is not envisaged to upload the data in PANGAEA or any other data base.

Page 10: EURO-BASIN General Meeting,eurobasin.dtuaqua.dk/eurobasin/documents/18 Months Meeting 201… · EURO-BASIN 18 Months Meeting Minutes, 22-24 May 2012 2/ 0 ACTION POINTS: Project Office:

AZTI (partner 4) has collected stomach content data for bluefin and albacore. Haritz Arrizabalaga (AZTI) will check with colleagues whether this data can be uploaded into PANGAEA or integrated into DAPSTOM and whether a data paper can be written (or a section in a general diet data paper). 3) Acoustic data for micro-nekton modelling The SEAPODYM model developped for albacore requires acoustic data for tuning the food component of the model. So far Patrick Lehodey (CLS) has had little success in finding suitable data for the North Atlantic. The suitable data are 38 kHz as values binned (Patrick Lehodey? Input?) Two Canadian Cruises in 2012 and 2013 (RV Celtic Explorer, PSO George Rose, Memorial University, New Foundland; see EURO-BASIN Cruise Programme 2013) will collect acoustic data in 4 transects, 18 kHz, 38kHz, 120kHz and 200kHz (G.Rose & Jon Fisher presentation at Cruise Planning Meeting, Sept 2011; possibly crossing Porcupine Abyssal Plain Time-Series site; see presentation by R. Lampitt, NOC). Possibility to do in situ sampling for validation is very limited by ship time (Coordination team discussions with George Rose, MUN). WP5 links with WP6 WP6 needs input specifying top down pressures by planktivorous fish. After some discussions it appeared that the best solution will be to provide "maximum" and "minimum" fish pressure estimates (representing different fishing and climate scenarios) to allow scenario runs by WP6. These fish pressures could be formulated in terms of the closure term for the zooplankton component. WP5 needs input from WP6 in terms of environmental factors (hydrography, zooplankton,..) from both hindcasts and future scenarios. To allow progres in WP5 before final EURO-Basin runs are avaible all ready existing estimates will be made supplied. To faciliate this WP6 will make of list of available predictions and their characteristics (area, years, spatial and temporal resolution, contact person, ..). The estimates will be provided in netcdf format. Within WP5 collaborations and issues 1) Contribution of Polish partner (MIR) to WP5, & Deliverable 1.6 Jan Horbowy (following skype discussion with Brian MacKenzie) will try to estimate stock biomass for pre-assessment periods for a short list of pelagic fish stocks (see Table 1 of stocks and species above). He will try to develop a specific method for this. Alternatively, the method by Brian and Margit Eero (Estimates of fish biomasses can be extended back in time using a simple surplus production based approach. Mar.Ecol.Prog.Ser. 440: 191-202) based on scaling catches using surplus production modelling and stock biomass estimates in recent years could be used. Action points: BRM: clarify with Jan what he is actually going to do. If he will not provide stock biomass estimates an alternative solution needs to be found. One possibility is to apply Brian's method (need to evaluate how much work this if assuming catch data and stock estimates are available). 2) Proposal of cross basin blue whiting diet modelling

Page 11: EURO-BASIN General Meeting,eurobasin.dtuaqua.dk/eurobasin/documents/18 Months Meeting 201… · EURO-BASIN 18 Months Meeting Minutes, 22-24 May 2012 2/ 0 ACTION POINTS: Project Office:

The idea to carry out a study looking at factors explaining stomach contents of blue whiting by using the information from the Norwegian Sea, West of Scotland, Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay was discussed. The approach would consist of a GAM with environmental and position data as explanatory variables. To achieve comprehensive geographic coverage a call for contributions beyond EURO-Basin will be made. Marine Scotland might have data (contacts Bill Turrel or Simon Greenstreet). A draft outline for the paper below:

Cross-basin modelling of blue whiting diet Lead author: ?? Contributors: Geir Huse, John Pinnegar, Verena Trenkel, ?? Mark Payne ?? Data contributors to be sollicitated : James Keating, Marine Scotland (Bill Turrell, Simon Greenstreet), Jason Link, see also excel spreadsheet on stomach content data compiled in 2011 Introduction blue whiting has wide spatial distribution and strong seasonal dynamics. Due to large biomass is expected to impact ecosystem locally. manuscripts assesses spatio-temporal variation in diet. Material and methods - stomach content across full range of bleu whiting distribution, covering size range? - explanatory variables: lat, long, depth, temperature?, zooplankton (CPR for euphausids?), time of day, month, size, - generalised additive model Results Discussion… 3) 18 month report All contributions will send text summarizing scientfic progress (1/2 to 1 page) to Verena by June 10. The text should refer to subtasks and cite published or submitted papers. Figures can be included.

WP6 Summary:

WP7 Summary:

The WP is to refocus tasks on pelagic species, rather than dimersal alone. Actions:

WP8 Summary:

GM: contact Momme Butenschon & draft strategy for Task 8.1;

MSJ drafting “Ecosystem Ensemble” strategy based on Task 8.3.2;

MSJ drafting Special Issue Chapter based on lead authors one pager summary;

Artur Palacz & Mike Heath to finalise WP8 deliverables;

MSFD GES Workshop on Pelagic Indicators (March 2013) (Collaboration with ICES WGECO(David Reid), WGACEGGS (J.Massé)

Goals: fit the workshop to the existing (and busy) GES calendar for optimum results, while using it for consortium needs.

ICES WGECO (David Reid) focus is not on pelagic GES, but broader;

ICES WGACEGG (Jacques Massé) is more appropriate;

ICES ASC Sept 2012: Pelagic Indicators session chaired by VT & Geir Huse (IMR).

ICES WGACEGG (Jacques Massé) meet Nov 2012;

IndiSEAS (Yunne Shin, IRD, France) also meeting Nov 2012;

Could the above set the stage for a useful March 2013 workshop either joint or parallel event?

VT: contact Jacques Massé & WGFAST chair Nils Olav Handegard IG: contact David Reid & Yunne Shin NOTES on ICES WGs: WGACEGG (chairman Jacques Massé [email protected]) This working coordinates acoustic and egg surveys from Gibraltar to the Celtic Sea. It also works on common data analyses. In 2011 they went through the list of MSFD indicators and decided for which could be calculated using the acoustic data. The calculations are planned to be done during 2012 and discussed at the next working group meeting in November. Jacques would be in favor of asking the group to support the EURO-BASIN initiative. WGFAST (chairman Nils Olav Handegard [email protected])

Relevant TOR for 2012 a) In response to the ICES strategic plan 200–2013, WGFAST will document how acoustic and complementary methods will contribute to the goals of an ecosystem approach with benthic and pelagic observations to improve assessment and management of living marine resources, understanding mechanisms and processes of change and stability, and parameterize and evaluate models of ecosystem structure and function. i) Ecosystem approach to fisheries management: metrics, indices and indicators. Provide methods and standards for creating and validating indicators and metrics derived from acoustic and complementary methods. Contributions addressing how acoustic metrics can be used to inform models and metrics addressing the effects of marine spatial planning, including marine protected areas are encouraged. Evaluate and compare a range of suitable metrics in empirical situations and by simulation, and data archaeology establishing long time-series of acoustic data are believed to be a key to make progress. (presentation session, Verena M. Trenkel) ICES ASC 2012 Theme session B The contribution of acoustics-derived indices for ecosystem-based fisheries management: technological and analytical challenges and recent advances Conveners: Mark Dickey-Collas (The Netherlands), Nils Olav Handegard (Norway), and Verena Trenkel (France)
