SECTION 1:2

GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICES General points to help improve fabrication-manufacturing standards.

1. WELDING a. Protective Tape

When welding all profiles it is important to pull back the protective tape from the weld area. Failure to do so can result in contamination of the weld by the tape, which would result in poor welds and the possibility of the weld cracking or even breaking.

b. Teflon

It is important, as a matter of routine, on the initial weld of the day to clean the Teflon on the welding plates with paper tissue to check for any signs of wear or damage. This routine procedure will reduce the possibility of producing bad quality welds, which could prove expensive.

c. The welder must be well maintained, i.e. air pressure, heater temperature, to ensure quality welds.

2. REINFORCING GUIDELINES a. Please check section 6 in the manual to establish our recommended parameters

for reinforcement. This guidance can never cover every possibility and certain window/door designs, may require additional modified reinforcement dependant on wind loading. It is possible that the design or style of the window might need changing so the required performance standards are met.

b. Screw Fixing of Reinforcing

It is important to remember that the number of screw fixings holding the reinforcement in position affects the rigidity of a profile. (Note: - Hardware screws should not be taken into consideration).

It is therefore essential to have a minimum of two screw fixings at intervals of 300mm on any lengths and 100mm from each corner.

Page 7: EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and Door System

Door System Issue 2 / April 2006

SECTION 1:3 4. MAXIMUM WINDOW SIZES

In order to operate within the guidelines regarding window sizes, please refer to the chart (see Section 8:1), which shows the maximum and minimum sizes of window styles. For example a larger type of casement window it is important that you determine which hinge is required and the correct position for the handles (Section 8:2/8:3).

5. WEATHER PERFORMANCE

For improved weather performance, see Section 9.

QUALITY STATEMENT

This manual provides guidance to our window and door fabricators with the prime objective of providing them with technical data and assembly instructions, which if duly implemented will enable a consistently high quality product to be produced. The Eurocell Window System has the uPVC content of its windows and doors manufactured by Eurocell Profiles Ltd who are accredited to the B.S EN ISO 9002 international quality standard. To maintain the prestigious B.S 7413 kitemark the following test procedures are undertaken on a daily basis: - a) Heat Reversion b) Heat Ageing c) Impact testing at low temperatures. d) Colour fastness. All additional testing is undertaken by the B.S.I test house at varying frequencies. The main frame and casement of sash profiles are marked at approximately 1 metre intervals, enabling the manufacturers name and date of manufacture of the extrusion to be traced without removal of window. To maintain the required quality standard it is strongly recommended that only Eurocell Profiles approved suppliers and specifications are used for the following products: - a) Glass. b) Reinforcement. c) Glazing gaskets and weather-stripping. d) Hardware and fixing Products.

SECTION 6:6

SUMMARY OF REINFORCEMENT GUIDELINES The Eurocell Logik 70mm Window system can be reinforced with either aluminium or steel. The information below is provided for general guidance only and offers no guarantee of a window/door performance rating. If specific performance standard is required consult the Eurocell Technical Department. a) Main frame sections should only be reinforced where they are not attached to a sub-

structure. b) Transom/Mullion profiles should be reinforced if the length is in excess of 1000mm.

c) Inner Casement profiles should be reinforced if the length is in excess of 1000mm. d) Tilt and Turn windows should be reinforced in the casement regardless of size.

Mainframes, transoms and mullions to the above criteria (a & b) apart from hinge points, which should always be reinforced.

e) Residential door casement and outer frame should always be reinforced vertically

whatever the size. f) Cill sections should be reinforced when in excess of 1500mm, or in a load-bearing

situation. GENERAL POINTS

a) The reinforcement lengths must be a minimum of 90% of the effective profile length.

b) Maximum reinforcement length, equal to the effectiveness length of the profile section. Reinforcement should pass through internal welded joints in one of the horizontal or vertical members to maximise the deflection rating of the frame.

e) All woodgrain or coloured profiles must be reinforced fully regardless of length, in order to help control linear expansion and also create better support.

f) Reinforcing support screws should be placed in unseen positions on profiles (for

reference see diagrams sections 10/11, With a minimum of two fixings no greater than 300mm apart and a maximum of 100mm in from each corner.

NOTE: The cutting recommendations for reinforcement for each specific style of window/door can be found in section 10 and section 11.

RECOMMENDED ROLLER POSITION AND HINGE SIZE:

It is recommended that the maximum size of hinge is used on a given sash size, this allows better clearance on the keeps and enhances the all round performance of the window. It is also recommended that the espagnolette length in relation to the sash size is kept in such a way that roller positions give an even compression along its length. The sizes below are for reference only and to give an indication of what to use in which situation. For more details on hardware refer to the Eurocell Logik 70mm window system relevant hardware manual.

SECTION 9:2

GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICE TO MAXIMISE WEATHER PERFORMANCE

GENERAL Manufacturing to the profile system supplier recommendations are vital to achieve BS 6375 Part I for air permeability, watertightness and wind resistance. POINTS TO FOLLOW 1. The saw should be checked regularly to ensure that the profile is cut to the

correct size. The weld 'burn-off' in relation to the overall frame size must be regularly monitored; this will ensure that the optimum cover is maintained.

2. To prevent profile step when welding ensure that the correct limiting blocks are

used and the profile is lined up and placed in the welding machine correctly. Corners should be neatly finished to promote good gasket contact.

3. External drainage slots should be 30mm long and 5mm wide.

a) M/F to M/F sizes less than 600mm 1 slot required. M/F to M/F sizes over 600mm 2 slots required. M/F to M/F sizes over 1200mm 3 slots required.

b) Internal slots should be offset by 50mm from external. c) Pressure equalisation should be incorporated into the drainage system if

windows are above 2 stories high or are being installed in exposed areas. However, it is suggested that this practice be standardised, as it is not always possible to know where the windows are to be installed.

4. After routing of profiles (e.g. drainage/locks) all slots and chambers should be

blown out so no swarf can block drainage slots. 5. Shadow grooves should be no more that 0.2mm deep or the gasket seal contact

will be reduced.

Page 79: EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and Door System

EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and

Door System Issue 2 / April 2006

SECTION 9:3 6. Handle positioning for cockspur is important reference Data sheet 8:3 7. Maximum length espagnolette for best roller position reference Data sheet 8:4 8. Beading should be tight in corners with no gaps so as not to encourage water

into glazing area. 9. Pull-in blocks are recommended opposite handle where there are no rollers or

ramps to maximise compression over 800mm. 10. Take care not to block drainage holes when packing glass. 12. Where possible a small amount of mastic on the corner of external glazing

gasket will reduce water ingress into glazing area. 13. Drip bars must be used on all internal opening doors and windows.

GLAZING GUIDELINES GENERAL All glazing meets with the required standard of BS6262. In addition, recommendations from glass unit manufacturers should be adhered to at all times. Glass and insulated glass units should be examined carefully for damage especially at the edges prior to installation. Defective items should not be used. The glass size used for glazing must allow for the necessary clearance required between glass unit and profile. GLAZING PROCEDURES GLAZING PACKERS The use of glazing packers is essential to allow the windows to function correctly. This is particularly important for the Side Hung and Tilt and Turn windows. The drawing headed 'Instruction for Installing Glazing Packers' shows suggested usage for the most common window types, which is based on BS6262. It is important to remember that the packing between the glass and the plastic of both sash and mainframe is essential to create a solid brace for security reasons. Positions shown in Section 14:4 between fixings and glass. It is essential that the glass stays in position, so it is recommended that, where necessary, mastic be used to hold the packers in position. DRAINAGE When glazing windows it is essential that great care be taken to ensure that glazing blocks or spacers do not obstruct drainage of the water from the glazing rebate. As a matter of practice EWS 7203 should be used as a load bearing support for the double glazed units so that both sheets of glass can be supported, thus avoiding restriction of any flow of water under the platform that might affect the drainage of the window.

SECTION 14:2

WOODGRAIN DOORS

In addition to the normal guidelines for the manufacture of Eurocell uPVC doors there are other recommendations to follow when fabricating woodgrain doors. It is essential to use the correct hardware for woodgrain doors. The conventional latching or roller striker arrangements have insufficient tolerance when taking into account the linear expansion and contraction of a woodgrain door profile. LOCKS It is recommended that you use multi-point locking hooks, both for security and operational ability and tolerance. Mushroom-headed rollers are not recommended. HINGES It is suggested that fully adjustable hinges be used. REINFORCING Reinforcing should be used throughout all principal profile sections of the door. Note: It should be continuous on the lock side of the door to prevent twisting in high temperatures. The reinforcing screws should be no more than 200mm apart as this also helps to control linear expansion. For continuous reinforcing on lock side use EWS 619S punched steel with a 35mm back set lock.

Page 117: EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and Door System

SECTION 14:3

DRESSING OF A WOODGRAIN WELD

Woodgrain should be welded at 0.2mm limitation and knifed off. Also, use a sprue guard to protect and give an even finish to the joint. For internal members mechanical joints are recommended to give a traditional appearance.

VENTING It is important to ensure all woodgrained products are correctly ventilated, as due to the dark colour of the profile it can become very warm in direct sunlight. If these sections are not correctly vented the expanding warm air could stress and permanently distort the profile. This applies to all external chambers of the profile, which need to be routed in an area where it is not visible when the sash is in its closed position. In most cases the drainage and pressure equalization holes will act as ventilation. See sections 10 for windows and 11 for doors. Cills are the most susceptible product to distort, as they tend to be the most exposed part of the window. They must be ventilated as shown below at no greater than 600mm centres, as the chambers become sealed when end caps are applied.

SECTION 14:4

STORAGE AND WORKING TEMPERATURES

1. The correct storage temperature of profiles should be no lower than 15 degrees

centigrade and no higher than 25 degrees centigrade.

2. Profiles should be stored horizontal and supported at maximum 1-metre

intervals.

3. Profiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to avoid heat build up and

distortion.

4. Even though profiles are protected, care should be taken when extracting them

from storage, i.e. do not drag out of racking.

SURVEYING AND INSTALLATION

INTRODUCTION Good surveying is essential to ensure a trouble free successful installation and to avoid costly remakes caused by incorrect measuring. When surveying it is the surveyor's responsibility to determine that the structural openings and surrounding areas are in a state of good repair and provide the correct dimensions for manufacture. It is not possible to provide full comprehensive surveying instruction to cover every eventuality, the following basic notes are for on-site surveying guidelines: - SURVEYING For all configurations of door and windows carry out the following: - MAIN POINTS: 1. Check the brickwork around the opening for any defects. 2. Check if any provision needs to be made for telephone or TV cables.

Advise the customer of these facts before proceeding. 3. Take several measurements across the opening to find the narrowest point,

having taken care to measure beyond any existing sub-frame or packing.

Deduct 10mm from this dimension to give the finished width. (5mm allowance for expansion on each side).

4. Measure the height of the opening in the same way as detailed above. 5. Take a note of any existing cill and establish if this is to be included in the

overall frame dimension (i.e. stone cill).

If the cill is to be replaced take a note of the depth of the existing reveal and determine which cill is most appropriate (i.e. 180mm, 150mm or the 85mm cill).

Page 121: EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and Door System

EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and

Door System Issue 2 / April 2006

SECTION 15:3

6. Check the squareness of the opening - it is important that the diagonals are no more than 10mm different; if they are remedial work may need to be carried out on the brickwork to ensure the opening is square.

7. If the window is fitted deep into the reveal check to see if the extension blocks are necessary to ensure that the sash operates and is not impeded.

8. If the customer has chosen a style of window, the surveyor must check to see if the styles are suitable for the intended application. Surveyor must check: -

a) That the units are within the supplier’s specification. b) That the units are within the max/min size limitations. c) That the windows will perform as designed. d) That the windows are acceptable to the customer.

9. The responsibility for re-plastering, fitting of curtain rails, blinds or other fittings or fixtures must be discussed and agreed with customer.

BAY WINDOWS

Preliminary Checks reference Load Bearing Windows.

It must be assumed that all bay windows are load bearing unless it can be proved beyond doubt that alternative support is sufficient to carry all dead and imposed loads. Bay windows supported by structural mullions (brick, stone etc), bays with small flat roofs and oriel windows are considered non-load bearing.

The structure between and above the bay window must be carefully inspected for any cracks or defects. New lead trays may be required under first floor bays that rest on timber or stonework.

Bay windows require to be replaced along the outside line of the existing frames. Consequently, accurate measurement of the external and internal angles is essential in addition to the overall dimension. In the same way as for flat windows wherever possible the surveyor should draw a template of the base of the bay using as many dimensions as are accessible.

All bay windows must be fully reinforced due to the method of coupling the frames with bay poles or support members. If bay windows are load bearing it is recommended that bay poles be located either directly on to a galvanised steel base plate resting on stone cill or the masonry beneath the cill.

When surveying bay windows it is important that the angles are correct, particularly for the manufacture of bay cills because no alteration can be made to the configuration once on site.

The angle sections between frames can be moved, between 100 degrees and 170 degrees before final adjustments are made and fitting on site on an existing cill.

SECTION 15:4 Distribution/Storage - Transportation and Handling of Windows/Doors. Doors and windows can be transported either glazed or unglazed. Patio doors and bay windows may be supplied in separate frames and fabricated on site. It is important that when the windows/doors are in transit they are stacked in a vertical position. Take care to prevent movement and surface scratching by wedging flexible packing material between surfaces. Prior to fitting on site windows must be checked for imperfections and damage. The majority of building materials (i.e. sand, cement) will not affect the properties of the PVCu. However, solvent-based materials - Bitumen etc, which can be found on building sites, will stain white PVCu. It is recommended that PVCu windows/doors delivered in a fully fabricated state should retain the protective film as long as possible, i.e. until all building work has ceased.

Positioning of the Window The position of the window in the opening is a combination of good practices and client satisfaction and should be the subject of prior agreement with the client, or specifier on large contracts.

In general the replacement window should be as follows: - - Bridge the cavity. - Cover the DPC - Be set back as far as possible within the opening to minimise exposure to the elements.

See drawing in Section 15 Page No 6-9.

Fixing Materials

All metal fixings such as cleats, screws and bolts should be of materials and finishes intended to offer high performance corrosion resistance. It is recommended that fabricator's use the fixing cleats and screws supplied by Eurocell as they comply with the necessary standard of BS6105.

Page 123: EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and Door System

EuroLogik Chamfered and Ovolo 70mm Window and

Door System Issue 2 / April 2006

SECTION 15:5

Installation of Windows/Doors

Preparation of aperture:

A. NEW BUILD Templates should be used in apertures to avoid damage to the pre-finished EWS product until the building work has been completed (i.e. lintel correctly installed and DPC's fitted).

B. REPLACEMENT OF WINDOWS/DOORS INTO EXISTING BUILDING When replacing windows/doors attention should be paid to the checking of the surround of the aperture regarding loose brickwork and plaster.

C. GENERAL PREPARATION Before removing the existing window the replacement frame should be measured and tolerances checked against the aperture (i.e. 5mm on either side of the window). Windows should be installed plumb and square without twist, racking or distortion of any member to ensure that they operate correctly after installation.

Eurocell window frames should be manufactured accurately to the specified outer frame dimensions and have opening lights to fixed frame clearance for operational efficiency. Distortion of any frame or sash member will reduce performance and create a security risk.

The choice of fixing cleats or plastic sheathed fixing bolts is usually dependent on whether the opening is already plastered. Fixing bolts are sometimes preferred to minimise redecoration in existing houses where windows are being replaced. Both methods are suitable for new installations.

If fixing cleats is the chosen method of installation they should be attached to the outer frame starting at 150mm from the corner and thereafter at a maximum of 600mm centres. The cleats should be screwed into the mainframe in the central reinforcing chamber (see drawing below).

Door System Issue 2 / April 2006

SECTION 15:6 If fixing screws/bolts are to be used then fixed lights should be deglazed and holes routed through the mainframe at the same fixing distances as the cleats. Drill a hole 12mm thick through the inside face of the mainframe and then use a masonry drill of a smaller diameter suitable for plastic sleeved fixing screws, drill through the remaining PVCu wall and into the masonry approximately 50 - 75mm deep. Screw home, taking care not to over tighten. Cap the hole on the inside of the frame with a grommet. Fixing is only necessary on three sides of the window, i.e. to the top and sides. Fixing holes should never be drilled down through the bottom profile. ‘See drawing below’. Cills Cills AC180, AC150, AS85 should normally be fixed to the bottom edge of the mainframe prior to installation of the window. The fixing screws should penetrate upwards into the reinforcement section in the central chamber. The cill should be placed on to a bed of mortar or silicone sealant.

SECTION 15:7

Guidelines for Frame Installation Having decided on the preferred method of fixing offer the window into the aperture, having positioned the window so that it is both level and plumb and being held in position with wedges until the fixing into the masonry is completed. Packing can also be used around the fixing bolts to ease fitting. The new frame must be fitted at least 10mm in from the outside edge of the face of the brickwork. Care should be taken as previously stated not to over tighten screw fixings as it could result in distortion or cracking of the plastic frame. It is essential that the windows are installed true and square, check by measuring the window's diagonals after installation to ensure that no twisting has taken place. Completing of Installation Having manufactured and installed the window so that there is a 5mm gap (approx.) between mainframe and masonry, it may be necessary to insert a flexible foam strip to form a base for the silicone sealant. Ensure that all the window/wall joints are properly sealed off neatly. See drawing. Finishing work may be necessary inside the window, i.e re-plastering or a Eurocell finishing trim. Internal Eurocell window board is also recommended both for replacement and in new buildings. Fixing of accessories to the inside of the window i.e.: - curtain rails and nets etc. Screw fixing can be used into the P.V.C frame as long as it is more than 20mm away from the welded joint. High-Low threaded screws are recommended for this use. Any doubts please contact Eurocell Technical Dept.
