Lesson Plan 2CI 402Karoline KamzicKristen GiermanApril 11, 2013

Name: Effects of European Climate

Class/Subject: Social Studies, 7th grade

Date: April 9, 2013

Student Objectives/Outcomes:-Students will differentiate between the variations of the European climate and the resources specific to each climate without error.-Students will construct poster map of Europe that illustrates relation of resources in Europe to their respective geographic location.

Content Standards:-17.B.3a: Explain how physical processes including climate, plate tectonics, erosion, soil formation, water cycle, and circulation patterns in the ocean shape patterns in the environment and influence availability and quality of natural resources.-17.C.3a: Explain how human activity is affected by geographic factors.

Materials/Resources/Technology:-computer with internet access (National Geographic slideshow)-whiteboard & markers-student worksheets connecting climate & countries-pre-made map posters -colored pencils/markers/crayons

Teacher’s Goals:-To illustrate how the different climates within Europe affect the natural resources found in certain European countries.-To demonstrate how climate and resources affect the economy of certain countries in Europe.

Time Activity0:00-0:03 Start of Lesson:

-9 volunteers will be asked to participate in mix and match challenge on the white board in which each student will attempt to connect a European country (from a provided list) with a resource (from a provided list) that might be found in the country. -Students will record their guesses by drawing a line between the country and

resource to illustrate the connection. -Academic conversation will occur as students explain their reasoning to the class and we record these inferences on the board.

0:03-0:04 Introduction of Lesson:-Explanation will be given about the objective of the day’s lesson. -Class will be introduced to the ways in which the different climates in Europe affect the resources found within certain geographic locations. -Class will check out how their guesses compared to the actual climates and resources that correlate – Final, correct answers will be filled in worksheet to be completed throughout the instruction. -Class will be broken down into small groups and complete a poster map of Europe that illustrates where the resources in Europe can be found geographically.

0:04-0:18 Lesson Instruction:-Class will begin with a recap of the quiz taken the previous day that highlighted the climates of Europe. (Questions will be drawn from the quiz to reiterate specific themes of climate in Europe).-Slideshow will begin in which pictures demonstrate certain resources located in specific countries. -First slide contains a picture of reindeer being herded. Indicative of the cold, Norweigan climate, students will be asked what country in Europe has a colder climate and might have reindeer as a resource and herding as a lifestyle. -Students will look at list of given options and check if their guess matches the correct answer. If the board is correct, we will have academic conservation to verify the answer. If incorrect, students will be questioned concerning climate, geographic location, and culture to arrive at the correct answer. Any changes will be made on the board so the students can visibly see the relationship. -Slideshow will continue in a similar method to hit upon the following relationships between country climate & resources/lifestyles. -Greece Olives -Scotland Forestry -Iceland Fishing -Russia Natural Oil & Gas -France Bridges -Italy Water Systems -Denmark Wind Energy

0:18-0:30 Assessments/Checks for Understanding:-After the relationships are corrected, students will be broken down into 5 groups of 5 to complete a poster map of Europe. -Students will be given markers, crayons, or colored pencils and be asked to use the information from their worksheet to locate the resources on the map. Resources will be drawn (i.e.: draw fish around Iceland) in their respective geographic location to provide students with a visual representation of the different climates within Europe.

-Students will work together to illustrate resources and can refer to their worksheets for reminders of what went where.

0:30-0:35 Closure/Wrap-Up/Review:-After group work is completed, we will come back together as a group to go over the answers from the worksheet. -Each group will choose a representative to show their illustrations to the class before we collect them and hang their work up in the classroom.-We will proceed to recapping what was discussed throughout the lesson. -Ask students to demonstrate instances of a specific climate and resource/lifestyle choice that results in a certain country. -Challenge students to think of other natural resources they are familiar with anywhere across the globe and how the climate relates.
