Preview France - Germany (4 July 2014)

Head-to-Head

· These teams have met 25 times in the international arena. France have won 11 meetings to Germany's eight. There have also been six draws.

· Of the 25 meetings three took place at the World Cup. France won once, Germany once and there was one draw.

· That one draw was their semifinal encounter at the 1982 World Cup. The match ended 3-3 after extra time and the Germans prevailed 5-4 in the ensuing penalty shootout, the first ever at a World Cup. Didier Six and Maxime Bossis missed for France and Uli Stielike missed for West Germany. To date, that is Germany's last miss in a penalty shootout in a major competition (European Championship or World Cup).

· That match in Seville is also remembered for a foul by German goalkeeper Harald 'Toni' Schumacher on France's Patrick Battiston, a high tackle that left the French defender unconscious. Dutch referee Charles Corver did not even yellow card Schumacher for the offence. Battiston, who had only been subbed in 10 minutes earlier was stretchered out with damaged vertebrae and several broken teeth.

· Four years later, these teams met again in the World Cup semifinals. Schumacher and Battiston were both back and this time West Germany boss Franz Beckenbauer engineered a 2-0 victory over Les Bleus in Guadalajara. Andreas Brehme and substitute Rudi Völler scored for West Germany.

· Their first World Cup meeting was the third place match in 1958. Four goals by Just Fontaine raised his tournament total to 13, a record for a single WC that still stands. The final score stood 6-3 to France and Germany have only once suffered a heavier defeat in a World Cup match, the 8-3 against Hungary in 1954.

· The most recent meeting was a 6 February 2013 friendly that Germany won 2-1 at the Stade de France. Mathieu Valbuena put France in front (44'), but Thomas Müller (51') and Sami Khedira (74') responded for the visitors.

· That ended a string of six meetings, all friendlies, in which France stayed undefeated against Germany (W5 D1 L0). On 29 February 2012, France last defeated Germany, defeating them 2-1 in Bremen.

· Real Madrid's Raphaël Varane and Karim Benzema will meet teammate Sami Khedira. Arsenal's Bacary Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud will run into teammates Per Mertesacker, Mesut Özil and Lukas Podolski.

France

· France have not been eliminated in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in 76 years. In 1938, they were knocked out in the last eight by eventual world champions Italy. In each of the previous four World Cups, France were either eliminated in the group phase or reached the final.

· France have scored 10 goals at the 2014 World Cup. The last time they reached double figures in the tournament (15 in 1998), they won the World Cup.

Euro2016 Forecast

In sports the fun starts with anticipation of the event; who is likely to win, how is my favorite team expected to perform?

For Euro2016 we have developed a forecasting model to predict the final outcome of the tournament. From the semifinals on the matches are predicted to be very close with France expected to win their 3rd European Championship, equaling Spain and Germany with most wins. The forecast will be updated when more friendlies in the warm-up to Euro2016 will be played, with updates during the tournament after each match day.

Germany have made most participations at the European Championship. In 2016, they

will take part in the final tournament for the 12th time and this includes appearances

made previously as West Germany.

In the quarterfinals at Euro2000, Netherlands scored half a dozen goals in

a 6-1 victory over Yugoslavia. The six goals are the most by one team in a European

Championship match.
