PREFACE
The Consultative Committee marked the 25th anniversary of the first
full session of the Committee in 1953 with an academic session and gala dinner
held in the New Theatre in Luxembourg on 26 January 1978. The academic session
took place in the presence of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg,
who also received the members of the Bureau in audience before the session.
The speeches were made by Mr Thorn, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Viscount
Davignon, Member of the European Commission, and by Mr Ackermann, President
of the Consultative Committee.
In accordance with tradition, one Session was held aw~ from Luxembourg
and took Pace, at the choice of the President, in Menton in France on 6 and 7
October 1977. A reception was offered by the town of Menton, and a visit to
the "Roger Latournerie" holiday centre of the Cru.Jse Autonome Nationale de la
Securite Sociale dans les Mines (social security scheme for miners) took place.
On 15 November 1977 the def).th occurred of Com::1ander John Hamer, a
British member of the consumers' category, and on 10 June 1978 of Mr Leslie
Jenkins, also a British member of the consumers' category. Both Commander
Hamer and Mr Jenkins had been members of the Committee since the entry of the
United Kingdom into the European Community in January 1973·
A report of its activity was given to the Subcommittee for Labour
Problems at its meeting on 25 April in Saarbrllcken by a representative from
the Joint Committee on Coal which had originally been set up foll~wing a reso
lution adopted by the Consultative Committee in 1954.
The exercise for the year 1977/78 was prolonged by three months due
to a delay in the renewal of the membership of the Committee by the Council.
It1hus covered the 15-month period 12 July 1977 to 20 October 1978.
