EASA LAD – ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO ICAO

• Combined with ICAO PFLR requirements :

o Crash survivability – at least for 121.5MHz homing signal

(required by SAR European teams)

o 121.5 MHz homing signal, with operating lifetime of 48 hours,

even in cold environment (-40°C)

o End of flight detection

o For survivable crash, location must be transmitted to SAR authorities within 20 min after End

of Flight, with 200 m accuracy

o Power autonomy for duration of flight without engines (max 30 min) plus 15 min following

End of Flight ; using emergency bus is an acceptable MoC

o No way to disengage the system in flight (apart from circuit breaker)

ELT(DT) : A ROBUST ADT TRANSMITTER SOLUTION

• A dedicated & optimized answer to Autonomous Distress Tracking requirements

• Leverages existing Cospas-Sarsat Distress detection

and distribution infrastructure (to RCCs)

• Bridges ADT implementation with legacy ELT(AF)

– in terms of integration, operation, maintenance

• Provides power and location autonomy, transmission robustness and low

nuisance triggering rate in a compact, super-rugged, cost-effective solution

INTRODUCING ULTIMA-DT

MEOSAR & GALILEO TECHNOLOGIES IN NEW GENERATION ELT(DT)

• Fully Compliant with ICAO ADT, EASA LAD, ED-62B requirements,

robust to aircraft power and location failure

• Crash-Survivable capability, maximizing the probability of finding survivors

by SAR forces thanks to 121.5 MHz homing signal ; Class 1 (-40°C)

• Compliant with FAA/EASA special conditions for lithium batteries

• DAL-C, Redundant internal Trigger in Flight chain providing

low nuisance activation rate

• Integrated Crash Sensor detection – ELT(AF) like behavior

• Internal GNSS receiver, with external location backup via A429

• Easy integration with single high-speed external antenna for GNSS reception

and 406 + 121.5 MHz transmission

• Cospas Sarsat First Generation Beacon (FGB),

upgradable to Second Generation Beacon (SGB) when operational

Same known integration principles as ELT(AF)

• Located at the rear of aircraft, close to antenna

• Cockpit Control Panel for manual activation

• Additional TiF ARINC 429 (label 202) to ELT(DT)

• Additional status ARINC429 (label 201) from ELT(DT)

• Additional triggering discrete interfaces available

CONCLUSION• GADSS ADT implementation requirements are now reasonably stabilized (at

least for airborne segment)

• EASA LAD adds a layer of mandated requirements, due to the focus on End of

Flight location

• ELT(DT) approach has been selected by all Airframers

• ULTIMA-DT, developed in the framework of European HELIOS program, is the

“Distress Tracking” member of a family of new generation ELTs meeting all

GADSS ADT/LAD requirements, including those related to Lithium Batteries

• Nov. 2020 trials validated ELT(DT) maturity to achieve ADT/LAD requirements,

from a technical, procedural and organizational perspectives ; It demonstrated

also the end-to-end feasibility of Remote Command service (through Galileo

RLS)
