INSPIRE
• DIRECTIVE establishing an infrastructure for spatial information in the
Community, for the purposes of Community environmental policies and
policies or activities which may have an impact on the environment
• “infrastructure for spatial information" means metadata, spatial data sets
and spatial data services; network services and technologies;
agreements on sharing, access and use; and coordination and
monitoring mechanisms, processes and procedures, established,

CHAPTER III : interoperability of spatial data sets and services
(Article 10 )

relating to a geographical feature the
location of which spans the frontier
between two or more Member States
are coherent, Member States shall,
where appropriate, decide by mutual
consent on the depiction and
position of such common features.

EuroGeographics vision & long term goals
• Vision : Seamless access to national reference information (mapping and related land and property information) for the benefit of the pan-European or cross-border customer.
• Main Goals : Technical interoperability Business interoperability Distributed architecture
• Organisational framework
the EuroSpec Programme
Page 9
EuroSpec is :
a programme of work of EuroGeographics established to
• realise the common vision of EuroGeographics’ Members
• provide INSPIRE with the underpinning consistent reference
information required as the foundation of the ESDI
• coordinate the existing and future activities of EuroGeographics
within a consistent framework for best efficiency towards the
common goals

EuroBoundaries, two complementary drivers
1. Contributing to the harmonised boundary “definition”
• National internal consistency, e.g. between Cadastre parcels & topography,
at all scales
• Bilateral agreements for common boundary lines, Boundary Commissions
• (Always) aiming at highest accuracy
2. Contributing to European GI interoperability : Boundary “description”
• Tool for edge matching of national Base Reference Information
• Using existing data as a starting point
• Aiming at widest coverage > accuracy to be improved in future updates
