Outline of how I developed my concept.

Developing an idea: At the very beginning, I wanted to choose a song that I could create a good narrative that would work well with the song I had chosen. The song ‘How You Like Me Now’, is a indie rock band, that has a good heavy rhythmic attitude. The idea of the narrative originated from being set in the 1930’s. Having a Mafia play a poker game in the back of a bar, while their was a band performance in another room. Their was also a conflict between the poker game characters and another mafia gang who would run in, shooting things in their sight, working towards the men against the poker table throughout the progression of the song. This idea got changed and developed quite a lot throughout the process and planning development. For example the location of having the story playing in a bar had to change, instead we filmed both the band performance and card game in the studio. We then ended up coming up with a different narrative, having the men in the poker room, playing for a man who was freezing to death in a meet locker. We had to get planning permission to film this section in the meat butchers in Cranleigh called Rawling’s.

Inspirations: A large inspiration that took place while coming up with the first idea of the narrative for the music video was a TV show named ‘Peaky Blinders’. This show is all about mafia gangsters in the late 1930’s.

Investigations: The audience that was portrayed and pointed towards was young adults, pointed in the age range of around mid twenties. Another was adulthood, for the history background in the narrative of the music video. The song it self is quite old, and isn't exactly looked towards the younger ages; between children and teenage hood.

Research Included The music genre of the song ‘How You Like Me Now’ performed originally by the band The Heavy, is a indie rock/Neo Soul genre. Bands that are similar with this genre are Collective Soul, or Arctic Monkeys. Both have a similar audience profile towards my media research and portfolio.

The Star image for the band was mainly pointed towards the older audiences. Having older band members. The act of crime through out the narrative works towards rebellious groups and acts.

The target audience is pointed largely towards a male audience. Looking at a young adult age group. Many people who would watch this music video would be a big movie film fan.

In summary what did I learn about the research of music video. How did this inform the concept that

I designed

What I learned from the research of the music video is that time and preparation are two very important values when trying to develop and

make an idea come to life. It was very important that everyone in my group was always staying in

task for what we needed to be getting done.

What Research into Location, Props, Costume & Set design

Props-Card board boxes (had ordered on Ebay -Band instruments (i.e Guitar, Bass, drums…)-Lead vocal Microphone (vintage 1930s)

Costume Had the cast members coming in dressed well, wearing white dress shirts, black jackets, black trousers and some wearing braces with their costume.

Set design The set design in the studio was set up to look quite simple. For the band performance we had a warm red brown coloured brick wall, we also used nice designs of having lightbulbs down the walls of the brick wall. We also had big ropes handing down on to the set by the cast members while performing, these were having down from the ceiling.

For the Narrative we had the same brick wall set up in the studio, though we took away the hanging light bulbs that were falling against the brick wall. We used a big wooden crate and placed it over a very bright light in the corner of the set. This made it look like there was a large firing stove in the corner of the set, which was a nice effect. In the meat locker in the Rawlings Cranleigh Butchers, we had big slabs of meet hung up from the walls. We also had a meat grinder beside us that we could work with.

Planning of my set design/ location/ star image

Planning for the set design took a lot of time to finish and work with. the props that we were going to use for the studio were card board boxes, trying to make the room into a warehouse. Unfortunately we could not accomplish this because the boxes we had ordered off of Ebay, had not arrived in

time. Instead we just used a wall that was made to look like a brick wall.

The location was set out quite quickly as we managed to get filming permission for the

Butchers Rawling’s in Cranleigh, early on in the planning process.

Storyboarding / AnimaticThe storyboard was very helpful for helping us

come up with an idea of lighting, and shot camera angles. It was a very helpful part of planning and

developing our idea.

When it came to editing the Animatic with the storyboard, I found that it gave us a good viewing

of what our music video would actually end up looking like.

We had to look at this very creatively, so that we could have our own visuals of what the video will

be like.

Shooting Schedule 9 am to 1:30pm

(in the studio filming the band performance)

2pm to 4pm (went to Rawlings in Cranleigh to shoot the

Butchers scene)

5pm to 6:20pm (came back to the studio to film the card game in

the studio)

Casting Band cast members:

Ted Jackson - Lead Vocal Dave Fonseka - Electric

Guitarist Georgio P - Bass Miles - Drum kit

Narrative cast members:Adam Grant

Jason MAshen

Mike Niland Planning the cast members was very important for our shoot. We originally had another person called James Baker playing in the Narrative. He had emailed me a week before telling me and my group members he could not take part in the music video. We then had to use a replace the cast member with a media teacher- Mike Niland.

Campaign ResearchCD Digi Pack

Though I have not yet finished this task, a lot of thought has gone into thinking about the CD Dig Pack.

Ive started off by deciding that inside we want to use photography, having a picture of the band members, on the

left side of the pack when you open it. I quite like this feature, as it allows the buyer to get to know the band when reaching

for the disk to play the tracks.

I have also thought about the front cover and the back cover. The front cover my group and I have thought about using

artist and creative skills. Using a skull, and flowers to soften the image intensity.

For the back cover, I have experimented effects used on a app on my phone called ‘Afterlight’. Using one of the effects, I took a picture of a brick wall, edited it to look more grimy and dirty, then using another picture, placed it onto, to make the

brick wall look transparent. I really liked this effect, and thought it was a nice example for what we could accomplish

on the back cover of the CD Digi Pack.

Website For the website, we have come up with a very simple and rough idea of how my group members and I want it to look.

The idea is to have a dark background for the back image of the website. This can be altered later and have images popping out in the corners such as flowers to lighten the tone of the style. I have also come up with a rough showing of the title of the band ‘The Manes’ and how we could present it on both the website and the CD Digi Pack.

EvaluationFrom over all, I am happy with what I have accomplished, from the research I have given and provided for my portfolio. The shooting day went very well and went all according to plan. The planning process took its time and had a few bumps along the way, but all worked smoothly towards the end. The biggest problem with the planning development side was working with the cast members, and figuring out who we could use on the specific date of the day of the shoot. The shooting day would have been even better if we had fixed the small problems as soon as they had occurred, and not leaving them later to last minute. Another thing was a the preparation of buying the props online. We had ordered a large scale of cardboard boxes a week before the shooting day, unfortunately they didn't arrive on time and we had to send them back. We could have avoided this by offering them two to three weeks before our shooting day. An area of development that my group and I could have been achieved, would have been looking at more organisation skills. My group and I were ready for this Task, though we could have done slightly better on the planning side of things.
