Introduction

Web based instructions shows an improvement over conven-tional classroom instruction.

Web offers many advantages such as access, flexibility, enrol-ment and management that must be factored in when determin-ing the overall value that the Web offers.

Advantages of Training Technology

Reduced travel cost

Increased accessibility

Improvements in learning

Interactivity with students and instructors

Individual feedback

Dimensions

To make meaningful learning environment need to understand these factors.

Levels of Web-Use in a course

According to the Galloway (1998) three levels of web use has been identified.

Level 01Web used to post course materials but no online instruction.

Level 02Web is used as the medium of instruction. Every thing is posted on the

web, but teacher becomes facilitator of knowledge and guiding the students. Student student interaction is increased.

Level 03Courses are offered completely online. Teachers and students interact

only over internet.

The effectiveness of Computer Based Instruction (CBI)

There are four learning outcomes investigated

Knowledge -student's knowledge of facts or concepts presented

Performance -student's skill in performing a task or

procedure

Retention -measured the durability of learning after an

interval of no instruc-tion

Time to complete-how much time is taken to complete the instruction

The Effectiveness of Web-Based Instruction

Four key features were identified from the articles published on 1996 and 2002 in order to find the effectiveness of web based instruction.

1. The degree of interaction in the course

2. The measurement of learning

3. The experimental design used in evaluating the course

4. The content of Web use throughout the course

But evaluations include in these studies fell into two broadcategories. One is web based instructional approaches toconventional classroom instruction. Second is evaluations involved the assessment of student performance and reactionsrelative to a single course.

Comparison to CBI

Comparing to conventional classroom instruction the learning outcomes from conventional CBI have demonstrated effect sizes significantly above “no significant difference.”

If web based instruction was employed properly, and used to archive specific learning objectives it should lead to effect sizes that are at lease comparable to CBI.

According to the analyses done result suggest that web based instruction is “as good” as CBI.

Conclusion

The use of the web for instruction is at an early stage of devel-opment.

For now it appears that web based instruction is moving to-wards the level of effectiveness previously achieved by CBI.

According to the findings reduce the cost of instruction by about one third, reduce the time of instruction by about one their or in-crease the effectiveness of instruction by one-third can be ap-plied to web based instruction.
