Initial audience research

Page 2: Evaluation

This is my version of the Verve Pipe this is at a dise angled CU and follows conventions of my genre of musicThis is the official version of the verve pipe. The two contain a mysterious girl who fades in and out but also is blurred at time.

I followed conventions here by copying the fading edits of main characters and singers. The two different images are MS and have a fading edit which is conventional.

Runaway Train – Soul Asylum

My Version - The FreshmanMy Version - The Freshman

Both of these shots represent 4th wall and act as if the singers are addressing the audiences. The two BCU’s are copied as convention as the music is both in the same style of genre.

These two shots, are similar as it is two people who love each other. And end up parting. The two shots however lead to a break up.

The Rascal Flats – What Hurts The Most

Page 4: Evaluation

The video ‘The Freshman’ by ‘The Verve Pipe’ was constructed and designed to give a little narrative but also a mysterious element to the shots. The editing of different shots tended to be either a fade in or a straight jump cut to represent the fast pace of that particular piece of narrative. Meise en scene demonstrates throughout the video the different styles of costumes, representing the different ages and the experiences between past on present. The filters over certain parts of the film represent different memories. The sepia denotes the singers past and experiences. The black and white denotes the memories of his ‘friend who gets slapped’ and finally the unedited colour represents modern time as a old man, reminiscing about his past. The candles in the video also co-inside with the candles and the ‘Brand’ of “Fire” however candles are connoted to be elegant and also primitive. They in the past were used to light the way however now they are used as decorations and nothing more. The use of non-diegetic sound added to the video was to maximise optimum sound output and give a clear crisp quality of sound. The camera work and variety of different shot types add different effects and meanings.. It also adds audience gratification to keep the audience interested. I have used many different shots, from Long shots, Zooms, MLS, MS, and also CU. The performance from all actors is armature however we gave it our best and that's all you can do. There are certain parts that are better than others

2. How effective is the combination of your MAIN PRODUCT and ANCILLARY texts?

BRANDMy brand was constructed to give a indie rock theme. The colours are not to vibrant yet they do not make the album look to dull. The colours are warm and the image is deliberately designed to create the denotation of young freshmen. (when lighter and fire were very cool) the fonts I used were to create a easy to read yet not boring title. The font I used was “MV Boli” this gave the title character; it reflected a younger generation of writing.

Audience fits in very easily with both ancillary and main product as the two go and go hand in hand with the same concept of institution. The reason my I chose this is due to the indie rock being relaxed and fire can denote both... It can be both the living source of life but also the taker of life aswell.

FRONT COVER

This was created whilst trying to keep the same brand , of fire and candles. However the candles were not very gratifying to audiences. Therefore I had to create a front cover by using my Zippo in a cupboard. The actual image was not cropped or altered in anyway however I did use some effects to create the dark and light contrasting. The different levels of light leaving the flame gives a warm denotes heat and warmth. I achieved this by using Photoshop and using the artistic filter option and choosing angled strokes .Also the lighter gives a younger.

Page 7: Evaluation

The text that was used is called MV Boli and again it is used to represent teenagers and young styled writing, or graffiti pens. The alternate places was a design I copied from the Album “Here and Now” by Nickelback, however to keep originality I moved the title to the side.

Page 8: Evaluation

Inside cover

This again to keep with he brand from the front cover had to contain some sort of light. Therefore the flames from the candles denote the front cover. Furthermore our main video piece also uses a lot of candles. The image has been edited by using Hue and saturation and leaning it more towards the red. The left side however has been edited to become symmetrical. I believe this gives it mystery as it does look interesting and different. The darkness however also follows along the theme of night in the music video.

Page 9: Evaluation

Back cover

This ancillary is actually me just stood against a white wall... And the background photo is accidental shot that I took whilst trying to get a poster image. However the two together denote freedom and the lights can connote many different things from fire to performance, staging or just street lights. This unique shot was totally original and un- copied from anything else.

RCA is a real company that is on the original album and therefore to keep with convention I decided to place it in its rightful place.

Page 10: Evaluation

The song titles are in fact the original songs from the real band “The Verve Pipe” The font used again is the same as the front covers “MV Boli” furthermore the lights behind although one does cover up a bit of a song title it gives a lovely lively warm effect.

Page 11: Evaluation

POSTER

The Poster was created by taking my camera up Werneth low in Stockport and taking various different shots. The clean cut font was used to keep the poster clean. The red colour again was to keep with the brand of fire from both the album covers and also the main music product.

Page 12: Evaluation

INSTITUTION OF FIRE

Page 13: Evaluation

My institution is very easily recognisable. The use of effects and fire clearly demonstrate my brand. The colour coding procedure was difficult however to keep with convention I tried to stay with the colour scheme of red, black and orange. As these colours are your typical genre for enigma and fire. To add the few things that I could change however is the amount of enigma in my video as allot of it is un answered however some of it is designed to get audiences to reflect and wonder plus make their own opinions. My genre is indie rock and therefore the images could not be to ‘pop rock’ or to heavy. After much debating I decided to go for the lighter and lights as it is mutual and can stretch across many different genre’s.

3. What have you have learned from AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

Page 15: Evaluation

Sub questions to consider: a. Planning.

How did you find your audience? (similar products, demographic work from last year, etc) How did your audience research and response influence the construction of your products?

A lot of my work was created from imagination, and little ideas from other music video's. However a lot of the shots and transitions also costume was created one night in my room. However some of the ideas did come from similar videos such as Nickelback, Bohemian Rhapsody, Goo Goo Dolls. The reason for this was that I like the certain effects used.

Page 16: Evaluation
Page 17: Evaluation

• As you can see the genre leaned towards Indie Rock• The majority who listened enjoyed the song I had in

mind and therefore there was no need to re-think of another band.

• With the amateur band, the views on You Tube were very low and therefore was a acceptable and decent song to use.

Page 18: Evaluation

b. How did you use audience responses to define your target audience?

My Target audience was confirmed or re-affirmed when I got the results of the Audience research task. It gave me firm confirmation towards my ideas. The mixture of colour, black and white and finally sepia gives the video definition but also enigma. My target audience reach was intestinally indie rockers who like guitars and drums. But also enjoy agood narrative.

Page 19: Evaluation

The questionnaire I used was designed to be quick and simple to read with minimal effort required. As my target audience tend to lack patience and attention. The questions I asked were also designed to be easy to tally up, leaving not much room to give a huge amount of answers.

4. How did you use MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES in the CONSTRUCTION and RESEARCH, PLANNING and EVALUATION stages?

Page 28: Evaluation

Technologies

• Photoshop – used for editing the music video• Word - for creating the script and for the

questionnaire • Imovie – for creating the final product, ‘The

Freshmen by The Verve Pipe’• Powerpoint – for showcasing my work and

explaining the details of my work• Windows media player – for allowing me to

view and show others for feedback.

Page 29: Evaluation

Preliminary taskTo get ourselves used to the new software ‘Imovie’ and also to get used to the new keyboards. In the lesson we used a five minute clip from the beginning of a Coronation Street clip and then manipulate it, to create what you want. I decided to be immature and create a clip called sexy time that is now on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLzqlrwfCKk Its idea was to be humorous but get me learning the ropes of Imovie.

BLOG AND WORK

• My blog consists of most of my work, I use it to show my peers and teachers the work I have done. It gives them a chance to review it and check on my progression.
