Evaluation Activity 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression

from it to full product?

Match on Action Match on Action creates the flow of movement, also adding the

realism of a character doing a single action. Here is an example from the preliminary task, and my character from my film who is walking home.

Although I did not use shot–reverse-shot edit technique, it is an important factor when filming a conversation between two characters, which I could see as a result of the preliminary task.

It improves the flow of their conversation, whilst giving the audience a view of the facial reactions. If there was a conversation included in my film, this technique would have been used.

Shot-reverse-shot

In my film, the 180° rule was not broken, and I kept the camera to the left side of my character throughout the whole of the opening sequence. This was something I often had to look our for and found ways to switch the angles and levels of the shots to make it more interesting.

Editing I learnt a lot about editing in Final Cut Pro and experimented

with the tools to find new things. One new skill I learnt was how to alter the pitch of a characters voice, which was in audio settings. This was used to disguise the antagonist’s voice when he makes a call at the beginning and also added a mystery element to the opening.

I also learnt to speed up the pace of the action, which lasted a few seconds as my character first appeared in the scene. This created an effect of placing the audience straight into the action.

I experimented with the effects, which varied how the footage was shown. As a result I chose the ‘old film’ and ‘fuzzy TV’ effect. This was used when the protagonist’s wife appeared on screen and the effect made her environment seem worse.
