Analysis in relation to other texts
To begin with I will start by explain the two different documentaries which I will be
analysing:
My Feature:
My documentary is about the Indian instrument the Dhol; this documentary explores
the instrument in detail, for example the culture side of it. This documentary is
aimed at the target audience aged 16 -24 and in terms of gender is both male and
female. This documentary is for all ethnic groups that is because it would then appeal
to a main stream audience. I felt this documentary would best compare with the
documentaries because there topic and content is very similar to my documentary.

The banjo project:
This documentary is by an institution called. The audience of this documentary is the
older generation for example aged between 20-40. This documentary is initially
about the instrument the Banjo, this documentary explores what the banjo is and
what people play this. I have chosen this documentary for my analysis because I feel
that this documentary will match the content of my documentary. For example my
documentary explores the Indian instrument dhol, is also has interviews of people
who play the instrument. My documentary has a similar style to this for example in
terms on structure, not as much as the same target
audience.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqRL3N1veSA
Documentary History of Chinese music instruments:
This documentary History of Chinese music instruments looks at the history of
some of the Chinese ethnic instrument. The audience for this documentary are both
male and female and the age for this documentary would be 20 -40 as well because
of the people featured in this documentary. I have chosen this documentary for
analysis and to compare with my documentary because of the structure and content
of this documentary for example when watching this documentary I noticed some
similarities for example they began by talking about the instrument then they
showed some performances of it bein g performed. That I think would appeal to the
audience.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFumRt38H4M

Your feature:
Content
The content of my documentary is about the Indian instrument the Dhol , thisdocumentary is UK based and looks at how the dhol is used in different places for
examples in my documentary I have talked about how it is used in weddings and
parties. The other angle which I have given is the fact if someone wants to learn the
dhol how would they learn. To make the information that the audience were getting
I made sure that in my documentary I has expert advice which gave the audience an
idea of what I was talking about.
Mode of address
The MOD (mode of address) of my documentary was informal I think and it was
direct in terms of audience, the documentary was very upbeat in terms of tone as
well that was because I think of the music in the background which made the
audience like the documentary and make them more interested in the documentary.
Most of the locations that I have used are very relent and casual locations. Themusic used at the begging of my documentary I think was used very well because it
gave the audience a tour of the instrument forexample the name how it is made and
the pictures gave the audience visual picture of the Dhol.

Conventions
The conventions in my documentary I think were used very well because I think I
used a good range of conventions some examples of conventions which I used in my
documentary included, sign on, voice over and also archive footage. Below you can
see some of the conventions that I used in my documentary:
Archive footage:
Here was some archive footage which I used in my documentary; this archive footage
was followed by a voice over which explained to the audience what the footage was
about. This footage was of two famous dhol players at a wedding which took place in
India. This was to show how this instrument is used at weddings. The use of archive
footage is very useful because it gives the audience the something to watch while an
interview would be going on.

Th
si
n on:
This is the use of thesign on this is when the presenter introduces the documentaryto the audience and talks about what the documentary is about and what it will
include
However my documentary did not include a sign off which could have been
moreeffective and also very appealing to the audience
St
l
nd fo
The type ofstyle and form which I wanted for my documentary was a very modern
affect that would keep the audienceengaged in my documentaryI had a slight
advantage I would that is because there are no documentary about this instrument
around todayso I wanted to createsomething that would cover most topics andstandout. I wanted to audience to enjoy the documentaryyet also get a message
across to them.
This interview was with Gurdeep Singh
to tell the audience about his dhol class
if they want to learn andwhat the dholcan do to people in terms of physically.

I also think that the music which I have used in my documentary is also very
useful because the music isvery modern and very upbeat that suits this
documentary and it also appeals to the mainstream audience.
Technolo
I think that the technology that I have used for my documentary isvery well used I
could have made more use of the technology but this wasenough for thestandard of
the documentary I was looking for. Whileediting on thesoftware provided which
was IMovie I think that myskills in terms ofediting have improved because I can do
more things that I couldnt do before for e
ample when an interview in happening I
managed to get a cutaway of people playing the dhol.
also used myskills when putting pictures of people playing the dhol or even people
performing with dhol on stage asyou can see from the pictures above of dhol players
and a performer.

Old text:
The Banjo Project
Content
The content of this documentary is very different to my documentary because
this documentary concerns a very different instrument to my documentary and
all a very different ethnicity and age group, but although it concerns a different
target audience to my documentary the structure of the documentary and how
it is presented is very similar to my documentary. The thing which I found
about the content of the documentary was when they had shown the history
of the Banjo instrument as you can see below:
This documentary looks at both sides of the story of this instrument; firstly
they begin with the history and tell the audience about it then they change the
style of the content and begin by talking about the modern effect and style of
the Banjo which I think that it has a very good effect.
Mode of address
The mode of address of this documentary is very different to my feature that is
because of how old this documentary is. To begin with the documentary doesnot have a presenter to tell the audience what the documentary is about it is
told by narration and pictures and the narrator is talking in my direct way to
the audience and they are also being informed. The type of clothes that the
people at the beginning who start the documentary by talking about the banjo
are all wearing very formal clothes like a shirt and jeans or a T-shirt which
connotes that this documentary is very in formal towards the audience.

Con
entions
Theconventions used in this documentary areverysimilar to my feature that is
because for e
ample they have used the following conventions Voice overwhich was used when some performances of theBanjo was on. However this
documentary did not have anysign on by a presenter the documentary began
with an introduction to theBanjo and pictures. This documentary also had a
few archive footages than my documentary did; the footage was mostly of
people playing the instrument whereas mine was more modernised footage of
people playing the dhol which isvery affective because it can give the audience
a visual picture in their head.
St
le andfo
This documentarysstyle and form wasvery different to my documentary in
terms of thestructure and how it is presented, some key points which I found
from this documentary which wassimilar to my feature were firstly the live
performance of the banjo this gives the audience to hear the instrument.
So thy haveshown a performance of
the banjo being played, this is why I
have decided to use thisstyle in mydocumentary asshown below at an
Indian wedding:
This aspect will also entertain the
audienceso I was kind of looking for
that kind of feel for my documentary
when making it and thinking of the
audience.

Technology
In terms of technology for the old documentary you can see that technology
was not as developed as it is now days, For example the types of camera
effects and the graphics that are used now days. The camera work and shot
types that are used in this are very good and compared to mine they are very
upbeat and also keep the audience engaged in the documentary.
You can tell the type of camera
that was being used in that time
from this documentary because
now cameras have clearer footage
to watch which is now HD.

History of Chinese Music Instruments (03) Xiao Di Pipa
Content
I found that for this documentary the content was very different from my
documentary and the Banjo documentary. This documentary aims to look at
the history of the Chinese instrument and. This was very useful for me because
I found that it was similar to my documentary because it gave information on
the instrument like the history of it like my documentarys aim was at the
beginning.

Mode of address
The mode of address of this documentary I think is very different to my
documentary because the mode of address of this documentary is very formal
to the audience.
Conventions
The conventions used in this documentary I think are used very well, the types
of conventions used in this documentary include a sign on but which is done in
a very different way to my documentary. This documentary doesnt have a
presenter to introduce the topic like my documentary, this goes into the
documentary with some narration of what the documentary is about. The
other conventions which have been used in this documentary are Voice over
and some archive footage which is footage of people playing the instrument.
tyle and form
Comparing this documentary to mine I would say that my documentary is
more upbeat and more modernised. That is because in this documentary the
music is the same and its not as upbeat as my documentary and doesnt keepthe audience engaged in the documentary but gives a lot of relevant
information to the audience.
Technology
The technology in this documentary compared to my documentary I think is
very similar because it has used a good range of camera shots when doing
interviews and also showing performances of people playing the instrument.
The use of the graphics are also used well they look very professional for the
audience and also appeal to the main stream audience.
