1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

products? My double page spread and Smash Hits double page spread have many similarities such as both our mastheads have been clearly presented.

Article- My article on the left hand side of my double page spread is in a question and answer form so that it is easier for the reader to follow. Compared to the double page spread in Smash Hits, my article contains a lot more text whereas Smash Hits have chosen to use mostly images in their double page spread. I have also included a grab quote which hasn’t been used in any on the double page spreads from Smash Hits, Billboard or NME. I have used a grab quote to get the reader interested in the article and the artists before they’ve read it.

Drop Cap- All of the existing magazines except Billboard have used a drop cap to start the article. Standfirst- I have also used a stand first which tells the reader a brief explanation about the article and who wrote it. Billboard and NME have also done this but Smash Hits has not.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents particular social groups in a positive way. In my media product I have represented all ethnicities by using a range of people from different ethnic backgrounds in my images. I have used a male teenager from an Asian ethnic but I have

portrayed him in a positive way. I have done this because I want my media product to appeal to all ethnicities. I have represented another ethnic group on my contents page and double page spread. By using both male and female artists in the photographs it shows both genders in a positive way. I have purposely used both genders so that my media product appeals to both male and female teenagers. I have used artists of the around the same age because my target audience is teenagers so it seemed appropriate to have images of artists around the same age. By doing this, it allows my target audience to relate to my media product more and hopefully enjoy it.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

On my contents page, I have used images of artists from an Afro- Caribbean background and from white backgrounds. Therefore my contents page represents all ethnicities. All of these people have been presented positively because they are smiling and looking straight at the camera. I have used both male and female artists to make my magazine appeal to both genders. In my audience research, the research showed that the audience wanted both genders to be presented in a positive way which is what I have done.
