Executive Summary The goal of the evaluation is to show whether the Syracuse University Football Strength and Conditioning Program is effective and impactful. The evaluation team utilizes several strategies to answer the questions of the stakeholders. The primary audiences for the assignment are the strength and conditioning staff, they are the people who this information will directly impact the most. The secondary audiences for this assignment include the football coaching staff. These coaches need to feel comfortable with the results of the evaluation because their success on the field is directly related to the players speed and strength.

The strategies used during this evaluation include observations, questionnaires, test results, and interviews. The observations are used to directly make objective critiques of the training. The interviews get extended responses on questions posed by the evaluation team. The test results are a direct measurement of where the players are, these numbers can be compared to players across the nation. The questionnaires provide feedback from the players and coaches on the training program.

The interviews reveal that the coaches should focus on improving the players lifting technique. The test results reveal that they players have become faster and stronger throughout the training. The questionnaires reveal that the players agree with much of the training that is taking place at SU.

The evaluation team recommends that the in order to improve the strength and conditioning program the client Coach Edinger should focus his efforts on the technique of the players because the strength numbers are high and the players have become faster during the training.

Introduction and Background The evaluation is focused on the Syracuse University Football Strength and Conditioning programs ability to develop the players into better athletes. This weight training program is unique because it has strategies and methods that are far from what traditional football programs use. Normal teams like to control the clock and game manage, these teams can have bigger athletes that do not have good endurance. In contrast, the SU Football philosophies installed by Coach Dino Babers emphasize up-tempo and no huddle. This means that the players will move with a higher sense of urgency on the field to keep the defense from subbing their players and fatigue their bodies.

The up-tempo tactic means that the SU offense runs about 90 plays per game while the other teams usually run around 75. Strength and Conditioning programs that prepare players for this style of play have a unique task. Their job is to make the players bigger and stronger, however their bodies must be able to endure the tempo. The SU Football Strength and Conditioning program is designed to allow a collaboration between the football and strength coaches to prepare the players for competition. The strength coaches use their expertise to keep the players fit and in shape for the task at hand. The football coaches emphasize tempo during practice.

Division I Football There are 129 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision football teams (the highest level of collegiate competition). Each team has a strength and conditioning program. There are 11 conferences that make up the FBS. These conferences are the most prestigious in the world. The conferences included:

1. American Athletic Conference (The American) 2. Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) 3. Big Ten Conference (Big Ten) 4. Big 12 Conference (Big 12) 5. Conference USA (C-USA) 6. FBS Independents (Ind.) 7. Mid-American Conference (MAC) 8. Mountain West Conference (MW) 9. Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12) 10. Southeastern Conference (SEC) 11. Sun Belt Conference (Sun Belt)

The top 5 conferences among the 11 are nicknamed the Power Five conferences. These 5 include the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and the Pac 12. These football players produce the most NFL talent and have athletes that are the best in the world. Syracuse University is in the ACC and has some of the best athletes in the nation. The goal every team has daily is to compete for a national championship.

Demographics Collegiate football players age ranges from 17 to 24. The 17-year-old student usually is early enrollees during the spring semester, which means they graduate high school early. The older student-athletes that graduate at 24 usually makes it to their 5th year on campus. Student-athletes experience tremendous growth in size, speed, and growth from their freshman to senior year on campus.

During the 2018 Calendar year, there were 104 student-athletes on the football team. The strength and conditioning coaches at Syracuse University have the role of developing these student-athletes into bigger, faster, stronger players. The strength and conditioning staff include the following:

❖ Sean Edinger – Head Strength Coach for football, Assistant Athletics Director ❖ Keith Caton – Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach ❖ David Scorzelli - Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach ❖ Sean Teter - Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Strength and conditioning coaches spend the most time with the players than the football coaches due to the NCAA Rules limiting time that football coaches can be around the players. The NCAA rules allow the strength and conditioning staff to be around the players year-round.

Football Training Facilities Athletic Training Facility

The Athletic Training Facility that is 11,140 square feet and cost $2,536,418.00 to build. The Athletic Training Facility is the main location for the strength and conditioning program. The staff offices are in this location and the weight training takes place in this building. The facility has all the essentials needed to give the student-athletes the opportunity to compete at their highest level. Treadmills, free weights, barbells, squat racks, etc. this facility is elite.

Ensley Athletic Center

The Ensley Athletic center is an indoor facility that has a 65-foot roof at the peak and has a 120-yard turf field. The Ensley Athletic center is the secondary training facility for the program. The players come into this facility mostly for speed and agility training. With the severe weather that takes place in Syracuse New York this indoor facility provides a shelter to train in despite the weather.

Coach Sean Edinger Sean Edinger is the Head Strength and Conditioning coach at Syracuse University. Coach Edinger is mostly referred to as Coach E, he is a graduate of the University of Kansas. His first full-time strength job was at Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas. His next job was at Eastern Illinois, here was partnered up with Coach Dino Babers (SU Head football coach) and became his head strength and conditioning coach. Since then Coach E has worked at Bowling Green State University and Syracuse University. He is responsible for the development of the Syracuse University football team’s development since 2016.

Purposes The purpose of this summative evaluation is to determine the impact and effectiveness of the Syracuse University Strength and Conditioning Program. The data gathered during this evaluation will clearly detail what changes or improvements need to be made to the program. The sub purposes of this summative evaluation are the following:

1. To establish procedures for collecting information for the program 2. To establish methods for gaining feedback from the player performance 3. To collect information that will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the program

Audiences The primary audience for this summative evaluation is Coach Sean Edinger and SU Head coach Dino Babers. There are two different staffs that have the most invested in the success of this program. The football coaching staff and the strength and conditioning coaching staff. The clarity of the evaluation plan will make its information useful to short- and long-term improvements to the program. These groups of people will analyze the information and put it to use.

Decisions and Questions Decisions The evaluation team and the client collaborated to provide accurate and vital information to aid decision making. We have pinpointed anticipated improvements that must be made during the future sessions of the program. The decisions that are being made are to maximize the quality of the training and coaching. The evaluation will allow both player and coaches to have a voice in influencing the training strategies moving forward. The following decisions are anticipated.

1. Modifications to the instruction to make it better 2. Modifications to the staff to make the program better 3. Modifications to the culture (norms and habits of players) to improve the team’s overall

philosophy (the way in which the team plays)

Methods - Question 1 How are the players reacting to the instruction? Are the football players getting bigger, stronger, and faster? What improvements must be made to the training program?

The evaluation team is utilizing different methods to answer each question. This shows the relevance of each method to showing whether the training is effective and impactful. The following data collection methods are used to gather information.

Interview: In the interviews with the players are conducted to gather information on their opinions of the training. How the players are reacting individually to the training is crucial information. Each person is different and with training there is no one size fits all regiment. Each player must receive some individual attention to reach their personal potential. This raises the question; do they feel they are being prepared for football. The overall goal of becoming better football players must always be kept in mind, therefore the personal interviews from different position groups can give a sense to the consensus of the team.

Test Results: Each player is tested at the beginning of training to see where they are at before instruction begins. Based on this assessment the coaches create target goals and the players have an input on these target goals for their speed and strength numbers. The test results will show are the players reaching their goals and measure the effectiveness of the training.

Questionnaire: Each player in the sample is given a questionnaire to get their insight on the effectiveness of the training they have been receiving since they began the program. There are questions on there that ask about their reaction to the instruction.

Observation: The evaluation team observes the team’s workouts determine whether certain requirements are met in the program.

Methods – Question 2 How are the players reacting to the instruction? Are the speed and strength training methods effective? What corrections could be made to maximize the players potential?

The evaluation team is utilizing different methods to answer each question. This shows the relevance of each method to showing whether the training is effective and impactful. The following data collection methods are used to gather information.

Interviews: The interviews of the assistant strength coaches give some different perspectives than the head strength coach. Each coach has extensive careers and experience in training for different football systems, the up-tempo training is different than the traditional. These interviews show whether the coaches can see growth in the players performance and how it translates to football.

Test Results: The test results are measured by the coaches and the are a clear measuring tool for the effectiveness of the speed and strength training.

Instrumentation Instrument 1: Observation of Training Program

Audience

The targeted audience for this instrument will be the 5 selected football players as well as Coach Edinger and his staff.

The observers (Travis and Trenton Greene) will constructively evaluate the program effectiveness.

Objectives

Purpose

The purpose of conducting this observation is to measure the effectiveness of the Syracuse football strength and conditioning program, in terms of how well coaches are developing the Syracuse football players. Also, how the player transitioning physically and mentally?

Significance

The core of our project is built here in the observation process. Combining our observations results with the rest of our findings will validate how effective the training program is and how the players developed.

Implementation

One of our biggest concerns while conduction our observation of the training program is our work schedule. Even though the strength and conditioning program is down the hall from our offices we might run into some time conflictions due to our heavy work schedule.

Instrument

*(INSERT APPENDIX)

Instrument 2: Testing Results

Audience

The Syracuse football Strength and Conditioning staff develop a training program for our football athletes to enhance their abilities on and off the field. The training program is put in place to help our football athletes develop and maintain a physical stature not only to increase their football abilities but also prevent them from injury. The testing results are designed to see how much progress the athlete has made from the start of training camp. The testing results also show how the strength staff has helped the athlete develop their skill and change the physical looks of their bodies.

Objectives

The main objective of the training results is to:

Page 11: Evaluation Plan - Syracuse University · The up-tempo tactic means that the SU offense runs about 90 plays per game while the other teams usually run around 75. Strength and Conditioning

IDE 641

1. Measure how effective the strength coaches enhanced and managed players development. 2. How hard the football athletes trained to develop their skills and make the physical

change to their bodies. 3. Measures how much the athlete will contribute to the football program.

The testing results are designed to show the football players development from the beginning of the training program to the end of the training program. The data collected here in the testing results also show how effectively the strength staff has managed and develop the training program to help the football athletes.

In this case, the testing results are pulled from each selected athlete weight room and skill training results. Each athlete is expected to max out in the weight room on specific workouts such as bench press and squat. The selected athletes will test on the bench press exercise for a heavy 2 rep max. Not only will they test on a heavy 2 rep max the athletes will also test for a high rep max of 225lbs on the bench press exercise. To top off the testing results we will pull from the training program the athletes are expected to give a 2-rep heavy squat max. The weeks leading up to the max out days will determine how effective the training program was for each individual athlete.

Going along with the weight room testing numbers the training program also tests the players on their speed and agility. The strength staff put together a number of speed and agility stations for the players to go through. 40-yard dash preparation along with short shuttle preparation and L drill preparation. The testing results from these specific workout drills we will gather and evaluate.

IDE 641

Interviewing the Syracuse Strength Staff will provide the evaluators with some extra information about the player's development from the staff’s perspective. The football players spend most of their time with the strength staff, training and preparing for the football season. The interviews conducted with the strength staff is vital to the evaluators collected data, because the staff has an in-depth opinion on how the selected guys transitioned throughout the program.

Instrument

Coaching Staff Interviews

1. How can this training program be improved?

2. What were the overall goals for the teams’ training this spring?

3. How do you measure the results of your training?

4. What tools used during the training worked best to you?

5. What would you change about the training program?

Goals

The overall goal for interviewing the strength staff is to measure how effectively they thought the athletes successfully managed the training program. Their feedback will provide the evaluation group with professional outlook on the development of the athletes.

Methods

The interviewing process will be conducted at the Syracuse Football Offices by both evaluators.

Logistics

Interviews will be held face to face at the Syracuse Football office. The evaluators will contact the coaches through text and or email, to set up a date to conduct the interviews.

Instrument 4: Interviews with athletes

Audience

The participants involved in the instrument (Interviews with athletes) includes the 15 selected Syracuse football athletes along with the evaluators, Travis and Trenton Greene. The evaluation team selected a list of questions to ask the athletes about their personal progress during the training program. The player will also participate in a online survey where they will answer questions about the overall effectiveness of the training program.

Objectives

Purpose

Page 14: Evaluation Plan - Syracuse University · The up-tempo tactic means that the SU offense runs about 90 plays per game while the other teams usually run around 75. Strength and Conditioning

IDE 641

The purpose for conducting the interviews and providing the online surveys is to evaluate what were the athletes thought process as they approached the training program to enhance their abilities. The online surveys will serve as a tool for the guys to give their feedback on how effective they thought the training program was and how they thought the coaches articulated and demonstrated the program.

Significance

The results found from the interviews and surveys will help the evaluators attain and provide constructive feedback to the strength staff on how to better the overall program.

Implementation

One of the major issues we may run into is class schedule conflicts. Being that the athlete’s classes are scheduled around training and football we have a small window of time to conduct interviews. Not only are the class schedule a conflict many of the guys have mandatory study hours they must complete each week so must plan around that as well.

Instrument

Interviews with athletes

1. How can this training program be improved?

2. What were the overall goals for the teams’ training this spring?

3. How do you measure the results of your training?

4. What tools used during the training worked best to you?

5. What would you change about the training program?

Goals

The overall goal for the interviews and surveys are to gain a deeper understanding of how the athletes prepared themselves to endure the tough training for the betterment of themselves. Also, to find out how effective the athletes thought the training was to them and how beneficial it was to them.

Methods

The interviewing process and surveys will be held at the Syracuse football facility.

Logistics

Interviews will be face to face at the football offices. The interviews and surveys will be set up through text and or email to find dates that correlate and works best for the athletes.

The athletes will be taking online surveys in the football offices. There we will provide the athletes with computers to complete the surveys.

Limitations The major limitation in the evaluation process are the following:

1. Selection bias: The 15 selected guys are handpicked, many of which are guys we thought would have the most upside in the training program. This could lead to a misconception that training program did a great job training the athletes.

2. Injury: Training for any sport can be dangerous, with all the heavy weight and fast movements the athletes go through daily an injury can occur at any moment.

3. Class conflicts: With it not being the summer training program classes are going on around this time. The athletes class schedule can conflict with times the evaluators may want to meet with them to conduct interviews and provide them with the surveys.

4. Truthfully responding: Some athletes might not personally like a coach and respond to the evaluators questions about the program in a negative way which could provide bias results.
