  • 1. Q: 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

2. Digipak PAGE ANALYSIS 3. BACK COVER h ighlighted similarities 4. BACK COVER The conventions of real media texts, and in this case an artists digipak, can be seen from just the two examples provided on the previous slide. The shared feature of my product and the two examples comes from the layout of the back covers contents. The track listing is central to page and is therefore the main focus of that particular page. In the sense, the product does conform to the conventions. It does not, however, have each track numbered. As a result, our track takes for granted that people will be listening to the whole album and discover for themselves what number a track is. In hindsight, a downside to not numbering the tracks is that people will have to search for the song they want rather then being able to specifically pinpoint it. In this sense we are not conforming to the generics and it has been proved to be a mistake. We do continue to conform with the generic conventions through the use of a barcode. This provides our product with a sense of testimony and realism and appears as though it was a genuine product. Overall, on the back cover of the digipak we have attempted to conform with the usual conventions. This is one of the most important parts of the album and therefore it is important that it understandable and accessible. 5. THANK YOU NOTE These thank you notes hold extreme similarities. They both contain shared knowledge about things only fans of the artist would know. They are extremely informal which helps to ascertain the casual, friendly, intimate relationship that these indie bands have with their fans. This thank you note was important to ensure that the audience was brought into context and related well. As you can see from the real life thank you note, the artist uses text talk i.e. replacing you with u and proclaims his love for his fans, just as our thank you note does. 6. FRONT COVER 7. FRONT COVER Overall, we believe that our front cover relates exceedingly well to real media products that are existent today. First of all, we will concentrate on what the content of the front cover is. We included the album title, band name and captivating image. This is similar to the majority of album covers as the text especially is vital to advertising. If anything, one of the examples we have provided is rejecting these usual conventions by NOT including the album title. This could be due to the fact that they expected people to buy the album for the fact that it was by the particular band and not because of what it was about. We did think it was wise to include the album title to give the cover definition. The picture we have used is extremely vital to the album cover. It is important for the album cover to attract attention, and if a portrait image is used, as the examples I have provided do, then it is important that these images make eye contact. This eye contact creates an artificial relationship and therefore the potential buyer is more driven towards a purchase. The font used for both the album title and band name is the same to enhance continuity. This is important to ascertain brand identity and the band becomes recognised by this font, becoming a sort of logo. 8. POSTER 9. POSTER The comparison examples we have used are all from the same genre and therefore accurate similarities can be observed. The poster we based our digipak on was mainly used for its simplicity and the layout that it proposed. The title is clear to see at the top of the page and it central to the top of the page. This is adhered to with our own selection, and because it is probably the most important feature, it has been made to stand out through a grey background. This was also so it was clear to read and so that the font didnt need to change colour. If we had changed the colour of the font it would distance from the one used on the front cover and reduce continuity. The text describing the album is minimal and in the same font. This is important again to obtain realism. The minimalistic approach also doesnt discourage people from a looking into the advertisement and thus discourage a purchase. The image is extremely appropriate to the colour schemes that have been utilised beforehand. It also captures the innocence and carefree nature of music and the band itself. 10. VIDEO Because we have used a different method of filming, it is hard to compare generic conventions. However, we can talk literally about things that we have used. First of all, the generic convention overall of an indie band is to be quirky and original, something that we have upheld by using such a method as this. The font also ascertains this with its narrow, compact appearance. We do however reject some conventions within the music video. We didnt have to discuss costumes, props or location of the video due to the fact that it was all conducted through a sketchpad. This meant that some of the usual detailing was lacking, although it is more than made up for in character. As well as this, we refute the usual convention of featuring real people, or usually the band or artist, within the video itself. This upholds the mystery and public shy behaviour that research has told us our band proclaim .
